● Faculty Senate worked outside of their approved process in order to compromise with administration: The Faculty Senate has collaborated with the administration to engage in General Education reform through the Adaptive University Council rather than through Senate despite the Senate General Education Committee’s assessment and determination that the General Education program is “working well as intended.” ● Faculty Senate has made sacrifices, in terms of budget: The Faculty Senate agreed to give up established workload for the Executive Committee members and Chair-Elect in Summer, despite many important tasks needing to be completed in Summer. The Faculty Senate has agreed to many changes to the Senate function to fit within new budget constraints, including giving up some of Senate’s administrative assistance allocation, giving up supervision of the Senate administrative assistant, and giving up office space and the Grupe center. Though the work of Faculty Senate continues as ever, the resources to do this work have been significantly diminished, threatening Senate’s ability to serve as the collective voice of faculty. ● Faculty Senate has reached out to the President to request specific details on how he would like Faculty Code to be changed: The Faculty Senate offered many times over the last six months to work with the administration through established processes on changes to the Faculty Code, which the President has stated needs “to adapt to the budget realities.” The Senate asked for clarification on the problems and the changes the Board of Trustees and the President would like to see in the Code. Over those months, the President offered little in terms of concrete examples of problems with the Code or changes he would like to see made, outside of his desire to eliminate faculty evaluations of the President and any mention of guaranteed workload for faculty leaders – workload that is a result of negotiation with the administration. It is dishonest of the President to demand that the Code be revised or eliminated in the name of nimble problem-solving when he has refused to work with Senate to address problems he claims exist and collaborate with shared governance groups to solve them.
