Are You Insured Against Uninsured Drivers?

The law clearly states that all drivers must carry a certain amount of insurance or risk a hefty fine and other consequences. But just because the law says to do something doesn’t mean everybody will. Many drivers won’t pay for insurance, figuring that it’s their problem if something happens. But if you have the bad luck to be involved in a vehicle accident with one of these drivers, it’s not just their problem, it’s yours as well. Do you really want to be sitting in your car after being T-boned by another driver, surrounded by broken glass and trying to figure out how badly you’re injured? On top of that, do you want to worry that you’re going to wipe out your savings paying for their mistake? As a personal injury attorney, I see cases like this fairly often. And I’m here to tell you, even though you shouldn’t have to have uninsured motorist coverage in an ideal world, in reality, it really helps. Often, that

coverage is the difference between an easy claim and payout and a protracted legal battle that may not result in adequate compensation for your injuries or those of your passengers. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage typically only costs a few hundred dollars more a year at most, and that’s a good investment when compared to the large medical bills that can be accrued after an accident. Additional coverage is also available for damage to your property, which can be applied to vehicle repairs if needed. You’ll still want to have an attorney help you submit the claim after an accident. Keep in mind, the insurance company won’t want to pay out, even if it’s your insurance company. In the end, it’s much easier for us to get you a fair recompense from uninsured motorist coverage than it is to sue the other driver and hope they have enough assets to make things right. If they didn’t pay for insurance in the first place, they probably won’t be able to pay out.
