Making the Cut

Everybody likes to win awards and be acknowledged in public, right? I was recently named one of SuperLawyers.com’s “rising stars” of 2017, a huge honor that took me totally by surprise. Not only did I not expect to win, but I didn’t even know I was in the running! That’s because they use a nomination process to select the candidates. Other attorneys submit nominations; if someone gets enough of those, the people at Super Lawyers look into them as a candidate for their short lists and awards. It turns out, enough people decided independently that they wanted to nominate me, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. I’m especially excited because solo practitioners don’t usually make the “rising stars” list or win other industry awards. Those usually go to members of larger law firms, which have money and people dedicated to getting their attorneys prestige. Only about 2.5 percent of attorneys in Florida receive this distinction. You’re not supposed to campaign for Super Lawyers, but, of course, it happens — just not in my case. Even if it was allowed, I’ve been too busy helping my clients. Knowing that other attorneys think this highly of me means a lot, and it’s a great way to start the summer. My golf season started off pretty great as well at the club’s tournament over Masters weekend. 36 two-man teams played in six different

“flights,” depending on their handicap. We first played a nine-hole match against everybody in our flight. Once those five matches were over, the top team in every flight advanced to the five-hole sudden death round. Wouldn’t you know it, my partner and I won our flight, so on we went to the final round. It was a new format than in years past; we played off each other’s ball, taking turns hitting. Every hole one of the flight winners was dismissed, so the pressure was really on — especially when you know your partner’s next shot depends on you! The pressure mounted from hole to hole, and although other teams were dismissed, we stayed in the game until the very last hole. It was just us and one other two-man team — and we won! What can I say? I had a great partner, a good game, and a hot putter! I also had a great time, and although the format was new, I really enjoyed it and hope it sticks around. I hope that your summer gets off to as good a start as mine has. It’s time for beaches and family gatherings, and maybe even a road trip or two. Please enjoy this month’s newsletter. And don’t forget to read the article inside on uninsured motorist coverage before that summer road trip!

4 Drink Hacks

to Keep Your Beverage Cool

or can before you place it in the freezer. The contents inside will cool much more quickly.

The sun is summer’s greatest ally — and greatest enemy. For every sun-soaked day at the beach, there are sunburns trying to ruin the party. With every excuse to drink an icy beverage, the sunshine’s more determined to keep the drink from staying cool. These hacks will allow you to enjoy the benefits of the summer sun without the side effect of a warm beverage. First, let’s say you just got home from the grocery store where you purchased a 12-pack of your favorite soda. You’re thirsty and it’s room temperature at best , right? Patience is a virtue, but there’s nothing wrong with accelerating the process. Fill a bowl with ice water and add a teaspoon of salt, then submerge a can of soda in the bowl. This process will cool your drink more than twice as fast as just putting it in the freezer. This other example requires less work, but it takes more freezer space. And if you’re like the rest of us, your freezer is pretty packed in the summer! Wet a paper towel and wrap it around a bottle

If you have more time to plan, this hack will keep your drink cold for longer. Ice doesn’t fit in a bottle, and freezing your beer or other beverage will get you to Slushy Town in a hurry. Fill an empty bottle about halfway, put the cap on, and place it in the freezer on its side. When it’s frozen, pour your favorite beverage inside — the ice from top to bottom will keep the contents cool on the go. Bonus Hack: This has nothing to do with the sun, but is still a neat way to make drinking your beverage easier. If you go fancy and use a straw when you drink from a can, you know how hard it is to get the straw to stay put. Spin the can’s tab around and feed the straw through it. Now you’ll have a well-behaved straw that doesn’t shift around when you need it to be there for you.

The sun is hot, and the summer is long. You need the comfort of a cool beverage to help you get through it. Keep cool, wear sunscreen, and have fun! June Client Testimonials

“Danny is the kind of attorney who will strategize to obtain the best result for his clients in a cost-efficient and expeditious manner. He is honest and cares about this clients and the outcomes of their cases.”

“Anyone who is thinking about hiring an attorney to represent them in their DUI case in South Florida should realize that the penalties for DUI are incredibly harsh — especially if you are a professional and care about your license! The arrest is just the beginning, and if you don’t hire Danny it’s only going to go downhill from there. There are a lot of DUI lawyers in this town, but I highly recommend that before you hire a cheap DUI attorney or try to handle your case yourself, you talk to Danny first. There are plenty of other lawyers on the internet or in “El Clarin,” you know, the ones that take any case that come through the door. Danny is an attorney who specializes in DUI. He is the attorney who attorneys and other professionals call when they get in trouble. That should give you a hint as to the quality of his representation.”

Are You Insured Against Uninsured Drivers?

The law clearly states that all drivers must carry a certain amount of insurance or risk a hefty fine and other consequences. But just because the law says to do something doesn’t mean everybody will. Many drivers won’t pay for insurance, figuring that it’s their problem if something happens. But if you have the bad luck to be involved in a vehicle accident with one of these drivers, it’s not just their problem, it’s yours as well. Do you really want to be sitting in your car after being T-boned by another driver, surrounded by broken glass and trying to figure out how badly you’re injured? On top of that, do you want to worry that you’re going to wipe out your savings paying for their mistake? As a personal injury attorney, I see cases like this fairly often. And I’m here to tell you, even though you shouldn’t have to have uninsured motorist coverage in an ideal world, in reality, it really helps. Often, that

coverage is the difference between an easy claim and payout and a protracted legal battle that may not result in adequate compensation for your injuries or those of your passengers. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage typically only costs a few hundred dollars more a year at most, and that’s a good investment when compared to the large medical bills that can be accrued after an accident. Additional coverage is also available for damage to your property, which can be applied to vehicle repairs if needed. You’ll still want to have an attorney help you submit the claim after an accident. Keep in mind, the insurance company won’t want to pay out, even if it’s your insurance company. In the end, it’s much easier for us to get you a fair recompense from uninsured motorist coverage than it is to sue the other driver and hope they have enough assets to make things right. If they didn’t pay for insurance in the first place, they probably won’t be able to pay out.

We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Theater

We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Theater Jaws and the Rise of the Summer Blockbuster

For many, summer is a great time to get outside and soak up the sunshine. For thousands of others, summer is a season littered with bone-rattling explosions, labyrinthine superhero crossovers, and cute, catchphrase-spouting animated characters.

But, in fact, “Jaws” is as indebted to timing and marketing as to the titular prehistoric fish. Before its release, Universal already smelled blood in the water, giving three times the usual number of interviews during its shooting. They went on to give a preview at Long Beach, with executives Lew Wasserman and Sidney Sheinberg tape-recording the audience’s reaction. These tapes were part of “an unprecedented $700,000 dollars’ worth of TV advertising,” according to Andrews. Nowadays, you can’t throw a beach ball in June without hitting some spandex- clad superhuman. But, even as the trailer for “Transformers 15” comes on, we’re not complaining. We’re too enthralled by what’s happening on screen.

All this is just to say that summer blockbusters are a big deal, raking in billions of dollars each year.

But it wasn’t always this way. Back in the early ’70s, ticket sales consistently flagged during the summer months. After all, who wants to sit inside on a beautiful day when you could be basking by the water?

All that changed when Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” hit the screen on June 20, 1975 and sent every beach bum scrambling out of the water and into theaters.

You can try to pin the movie’s enormous success — grossing $470 million worldwide — on its thrilling story, and certainly that was part of it. As “Financial Times” writer Nigel Andrews puts it, “Jaws” gave Spielberg “the template for the perfect blockbuster. Create a colossal baddie … and a colossal hero … [and] follow by natural law.”
