alter the major portion was taken into captivity to Babylon. What should they do? Stay in the land? Go down into Egypt or what? Around such questions the lesson revolves. The “ remnant” of Judah who had been left in the land following the captivity came to the prophet Jeremiah seeking God’s will as to their future. They were weak. Strong nations were on either side of them. As they approached Jeremiah for divine direction, they seemed to be very sincere. However, as subsequent events proved, it becomes apparent that they already had their minds made up as to what they were going to do and only desired the confirmation of the right ness of it from God’s prophet. They prom ised to do whatever the will of God might be. It is a serious thing to make prom ises to God. A ll possible effort should be made to keep these promises. Disobeying God's Will 43:2, 4, 7 Instead of obeying the Word of the Lord as it came through Jeremiah, they accused the prophet of speaking falsely (v. 2). They proceeded in definite disobedience to go to the land of Egypt (w . 4, 7). They forgot that Palestine was the place of divine blessing, the place of divine ap pointment. They wanted to go down into Egypt to find safety from the Chaldeans (v. 3). They failed to realize that the best safety is to trust in the Lord. See Ps. 20:7, and Isa. 31:1. No matter what the surrounding situation may be, it is always safe to obey God. Turning Unto False Gods 44:15-18, 23 Following their disobedience, it is not surprising to find the remnant worship ping false deities for which Egypt was famous. The queen of heaven or the moon goddess Ashtoreth seemed to be the object of special attention. The sin of disobedi ence leads to all sorts of iniquitous action. Helps for the Children Jeremiah Stands by His People 2 Ki. 25:10-12; Jer. 40:1-6 M EMO R Y V E R S E : "The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped" (Ps. 28:7a). When the Jewish people were taken into captivity by their enemies, some of the poor Jews were left in Palestine to care for the land. Jeremiah, the great prophet, was given his choice of going to Babylon with the captives and having a splendid position, or of staying with the poor in Palestine. Jeremiah chose to re main in Jerusalem and help his people rebuild the land which their enemies had destroyed. Jeremiah knew that his own comfort and wealth were not as impor tant as was the rebuilding of the beloved land of the Jewish nation. When Satan tempts you to make selfish choices or decisions, remember that you must choose whether or not you will have God’s very best plan for your life. You can never be truly happy unless you are in the place of God’s choosing. Re member that, “ The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped.” END. Seeking God's Will 42:1b, 5-7, 10, 19
