There seems to be a pattern, because in 2018 the Progressive Conser- vative candidate was also absent.» Another citizen asked the candidates PO'BDFCPPL j8IBUEPZPVUIJOLBCPVU the Conservatives’ absence tonight in the context of the 2018 cuts?» Simard began by denouncing what she described as the Ford government’s betrayal of Francophones before attacking her Pro- gressive-Conservative rival’s lack of courage: «The Conservative candidate likes to talk a lot in the media and attack others virtually, attacking me personally especially, but he is not even able to come and do it here tonight.» Brassard presented himself as the authentic conservative candidate in the absence of Sarrazin: «The real conservative is here. I did not leave with Ford for a reason: I do not want to be with Ford. I am the real conservative. For his part, Riden insisted on the impor- tance of debate in a democracy: «Partici- pation in our democracy is very important. Democracy is not a spectator sport, you have to get involved and debate the issues.»
Quite a few jabs were thrown at Progressive-Conservative candi- date Stéphane Sarrazin for his ab- sence during the French debate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. The absence of Progressive Conservative Stéphane Sarrazin from the French debate for the provincial election candidates in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell (GPR) generated a lot of reactions during the evening. Green Party candidate Thalia Riden, New Blue Party candidate Victor Brassard and Liberal candidate Amanda Simard were present during the debate. Progressive Conservative candidate Stéphane Sarrazin, New Democratic Party candidate Alicia Eglin, and Stéphane Aubry of the Ontario Party were all absent. No one commented on the absence of the NDP candidate, but many of the spea- kers during the evening commented on the absence of Mr. Sarrazin. A citizen who was questioning the candi- dates about the voting system in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell thanked all three candidates for their presence by throwing a jab at Sarrazin: «I want to thank the candidates who showed up here tonight and who demonstrate the seriousness of their candidacy by listening to the population and answering their questions. I would also like to mention my disappointment that the Conservative Party and Mr. Sarrazin did
