Courts Senate Bill 344 and Companion House Bill 211 Current law requires that a guardian must file with the court an annual guardianship plan that includes a medical evaluation performed by a physician. The legislation authorizes a physician to delegate to a qualified physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse the duty to conduct the annual medical examination, to prepare and sign the required report. The legislation is now Chapter No. 2020-73, Laws of Florida, effective July 1, 2020. Protection for Vulnerable Investors House Bill 813 and Companion Senate Bill 1672 The legislation will add financial securities dealers and investment advisers to the list of specified persons required to report to the Central Abuse Hotline financial abuse or exploitation of vulnerable adults and the elderly. The legislation is now Chapter No. 2020-158, Laws of Florida, effective July 1, 2020. Guardianship Senate Bill 994 and Companion House Bill 709 The legislation revises the guardianship statutes to address the appointment of a guardian, orders not to resuscitate, information required in petitions for the appointment of a guardian, mandated guardianship reports, and potential conflicts of interest. The legislation is in response to a series of abuses by guardians covered by the media in 2019. The legislation is now Chapter No. 2020-35, Laws of Florida, effective July 1, 2020.

Elder Abuse Fatality Review Teams Senate Bill 400 and Companion House Bill 253 The legislation creates in each judicial circuit a multidisciplinary, multiagency elder abuse fatality review team. The teams will review fatal incidents involving elder abuse and make policy recommendations to help prevent future incidents. The legislation is now Chapter No. 2020-17, Laws of Florida, effective July 1, 2020.
