SILENT EVANGELISTS Many people who seek to invest money for th e spread of th e Gospel a re w aking up to th e value of* “ silen t evangelists” —billboards bearing S crip tu re verses rela tin g to th e way of salvation. The T ra ct Society of Muskogee, Okla., has been responsible fo r in teresting many people in th is kind of Christian te sti mony and th e resu lts have g reatly en couraged those who have p u t up these signs. A Christian lady recen tly in vested $300 in th e p rin tin g of large posters of th is n a tu re to be p u t up in Los Angeles, and a larg e -billboard con cern, when approached abou t th e m at te r, g ran ted space for th e signs free of charge, many of th e signs being placed on illum inated boards th ro u g h o u t th e city. O ther p arties in Los Angeles have had stre e t car signs made of sim ilar n a tu re and th e car advertising company have in tim ated th a t th ey w ill g ra n t spaces fo r hund red s of these tex ts in cars on th e Pacific coast. Those who have confidence in th e prom ise th a t “ th e Word of God shall n o t re tu rn unto Him void” will th in k seriously of th is kind of work. Young people’s societies and o ther Christian organizations should get back of it and p u t th e Word of God before th e public in th is way. These silen t evangelists should be doing th e ir work in every community, and C hristian people should pray th a t souls may be b rough t under conviction by them . P ray over this. W rite to th e T ract Society,

THE CHEERFUL BOOK “My soul shall be joyful in my God” (Isa. 6 1 :1 0 ). The g rea t purpose of religion is not to m ake men happy, b u t to m ake men good; b u t w hatever makes men good is very su re to m ake them happy. I t is w orthy of rem ark th a t in th e Bible we m eet w ith th e word “ joy” twice as often as w ith th e word “ sorrow” ; th e word “ h ell” you may see in fifty-three in stances, th e word “ heaven” in fou r hun dred and seventy-five; and fo r once th a t you read of “ dam nation ," you read of “ salv ation” sixteen tim es. “G ladness” occurs n early fifty times, “ sadness” only once; and I find th e word “ happy” in some twenty-seven passages of Scrip tu re, whereas I believe th a t you w ill look in vain, from th e beginning of th e Bible to th e end, fo r th e word “ un happy.” Of course, th ese facts do not te ll very much, a p a rt from th e exam ina tion of th e tex ts; still, a religion th e source of which, and th e tru e st expres sion of which, are to be found in a Book in which th e cheerful words so greatly outnum ber th e m ournful ones, can hardly be a very sorrow ful kind of r e ligion.— H.
