We didn’t always have snow, but we would often have frigid temperatures and many days when you didn’t want to step foot outside. Thankfully, my parents never wanted to put up with the cold all winter long.

As I got older, I realized this was the place I wanted to call home. I had so many great memories and wanted to make new memories

During one of our winter breaks from school in my early childhood, my parents decided for us to escape the cold and travel to sunny Florida for Christmas. So, we did. After spending our first Christmas in Florida, an annual family tradition was officially created. It was this tradition of visiting Florida during the holidays that cemented my love for the sunshine state. We always had so much fun spending two weeks in Bonita Springs just north of Naples, on the west coast of Florida. Over time, our two-week tradition turned into my parents snowbirding in Florida — spending up to four months in Bonita and successfully avoiding the chill of Illinois. My sister and I always looked forward to our trip to Florida during the holidays. We’d spend all day swimming in the surf until it was time for dinner. Then, we’d fall into bed with no energy left. The next day, we would do it all again.

starting my young adult life in this beautiful state. I enrolled in law school in Florida, started working as an attorney in Florida, and finally opened my own law firm in Florida — I even met my wife while she was attending graduate school in Florida. But, it all comes back to those early vacations and playing in the surf with my sister that got my love affair started with this beautiful state. The interesting thing about our Florida trips was how simple they were, at least as far as Florida vacations go. These trips weren’t about going to Disney World or any of the traditional things many people associate with a “Florida vacation.” They were more about the time we were spending together. We still did all kinds of fun “Florida” things, however. My parents loved to fish, so my dad would charter a boat and we’d head out for open waters to fish. Or we’d hit the tennis courts. I never played tennis except when we were in Florida on vacation. It was another one of those things I looked forward to. That doesn’t mean we didn’t go to Disney World, but it wasn’t a focal point of our stay. Of course, now that I’ve lived in Florida for years, my wife, daughter and I make it to Disney World at least once a year. And there are still many Florida attractions I still want to visit such as the Kennedy Space Center and St. Augustine. I’m thankful my parents started this tradition. It left me with many wonderful memories of the holidays with my family, and that’s really what the holidays are about — making wonderful memories. Even better, though, this was a family tradition that ultimately put me on the path to where I am today, working and living in this great state.

Connecting Generations

HOW ‘READY PLAYER ONE’ CAN HELP YOUR FAMILY BOND If you need a piece of pop culture that will bond you and the gamer in your family, then look no further than Ernest Cline’s science fiction juggernaut, “Ready Player One.” This 2011 novel not only reads like a love letter to ‘80s pop culture but also demonstrates how gaming connects people of all ages, cultures, and circumstances. other. The virtual world provides them the experience to bond and, eventually, celebrate their differences, a lesson everyone should revisit.

Among the lessons, the ‘80s references, and the challenges, Cline’s 385-page adventure has something for everyone. If you want to explore this book with your family, find it on Amazon or your local bookstore! I highly recommend it! I also recommend Cline’s follow-up book, “Armada.” While “Armada” is not a sequel, it’s written in a similar vein. It’s about a teenager who plays an online video game dedicated to defending the world from alien invasion. It’s a lot of fun with plenty of twists and turns!

Cline’s novel is set in a 2044 dystopia, where people use a virtual reality called the Oasis to escape from their grim realities. The Oasis’ shadowy inventor, a figure reminiscent of Willy Wonka, announces he will bequeath his trillion-dollar empire to the player who can find the Easter egg hidden in his program behind multiple challenges and minigames. These challenges provide the means by which you can bond with your loved ones. Each minigame is a riddle about ‘80s pop culture, giving your family, younger and older ones included, a fun opportunity to guess at the answers you may already know yourself. Not to mention, icons like King Kong and The Iron Giant appear at crucial points in this sci-fi tale and serve as a great entry into these two classic franchises. Along with these fun cameos, “Ready Player One” features a subtle, heartwarming storyline that makes the entire geeky thrill just a little more relatable. Throughout the book, the main character, Wade, known as Parzival in the Oasis, relies on several friends as he searches for the Easter egg. Though they are all together in the program, these friends are actually across the globe from each

Just One Drink … FROM THE LAW BLOG

STAYING SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Of course, anyone who drinks should never drive. You should always allow enough time after drinking to make sure you’re completely sober before getting behind the wheel. One rule of thumb is to wait at least 45 minutes to an hour per drink. Here are a few more tips to help you safely enjoy the holiday season: • If you don’t want a drink, just say, “No, thanks.” Don’t feel like you have to give in to peer pressure. • Have nonalcoholic drinks available for guests and keep a glass of water or another nonalcoholic drink within arm’s reach for yourself. • Always designate a driver. • Keep a taxi or ride-share service such as Uber or Lyft on standby. • Drink responsibly, and decide how many drinks you’ll have in advance. A blood alcohol chart can help you understand the relationship between drinks, blood alcohol content, and level of impairment. • Don’t let drinking become the main focus. Remember that the holidays and social events that come with them are really about having fun with family and friends!

Celebrating with friends and family is a big part of the holiday season. But these many gatherings can come with a dark side: In the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, more people consume alcohol than at any other point during the year. This means the last several weeks of the year can be the most dangerous on the road because alcohol-related accidents and fatalities reach a peak. The increase in social drinking is one of the biggest reasons more people get into alcohol-related accidents during this time of year. More people are casually drinking with dinner, as they watch football, and even to cope with the stress of the season. Another thing to consider is that many people who drink during Thanksgiving or the December holidays don’t drink often. As social drinkers, or “holiday drinkers,” they are more likely to underestimate their level of impairment and end up driving when they shouldn’t.

Yurts: Glamping at Its Finest

Glamping in Beautiful Locations

TREEBONES RESORT, CALIFORNIA For those new to the glamping scene, this is a great choice for an easy transition. With picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean, the Treebones Resort in Big Sur has an array of spaciously comfortable yurts to choose from. The resort has heated pools, a cozy lodge, and even a sushi bar. About an hour up the coastline, you can find a few shops, restaurants, and art galleries if you decide you’ve gotten your dose of nature for the day. SPRUCE HOLE YURT, COLORADO Nestled in the San Juan Mountains about 10 miles north of New Mexico, this yurt is a snow-lover’s paradise. Skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking trails are plentiful in this backcountry location. At the end of a chilly day, come home to comfy beds, cooking supplies, and decor made to feel like you’re camping — but with sturdy walls to keep out the cold. FALLS BROOK YURTS, NEW YORK For the glampers who truly want to get away, hike just under 1 mile into the woods of the Adirondack Mountains to discover rustic yurts beckoning you to cook over a fire or bundle up with a book. At night, the yurt’s domed skylight offers excellent stargazing. For those keen on winter activities, skiing and snowshoeing trails start right outside the front door. In the summer, enjoy hiking, fishing, and swimming.

The allure of the great outdoors calls to many, but pitching a tent and cooking over a fire isn’t for everyone. If that describes you, consider the yurt: a small, permanent structure often outfitted with electricity, plumbing, and other modern amenities. Expertly nestled in remote locations, they provide comforts of home in the midst of nature. Here are just a few around the United States available for rent.
