APRIL 2023
A NOTE FROM SYLVIA April in Minnesota — my hyacinths, daffodils and tulips will soon be poking through the dirt, and all of us have a bit more “spring” in our step. In addition to longer hours of daylight, bits of green everywhere and hints of warmth in the air, we have a lot to celebrate in April, including Earth Day. TPT has two exciting announcements in support of Earth Day. First, America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston will be returning this summer for a second season. This series is produced by TPT for PBS, and we are deep in production on new episodes. You can learn more about the series and our incredible National Production team on pages 6-7. In addition, the second season of our local companion series, Outside Chance , is available on Passport and at tpt.org/outdoors . Outside Chance is hosted by yogi, emcee, rapper, and outdoor enthusiast Chance York. In each episode, Chance and area experts take on new adventures in the outdoor playgrounds of Minnesota. The final episodes of this great digital series drop later this month — just in time for your own spring adventures in the outdoors. We also have an outstanding programming lineup this month, including Freshwater , a local independent documentary. Freshwater dives into the cold waters of Minnesota’s Lake Superior, sharing the stories of North Shore surfers and the importance of our waterways as critical habitats and essential resources. The film will premiere April 5 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2. More Earth Day and outdoor programming is highlighted throughout the magazine. Finally, on Monday evenings at 8 p.m. on TPT 2, tune in to watch six weeks of Minnesota Experience fan favorites. This master class in Minnesota history began with Citizen on March 27, and continues throughout April with Steamship America , Flour Power , Becoming Big League , Co-op Wars , and Baldies , all as a lead up to a brand-new season of Minnesota Experience coming in 2024.
Our great programming would not be possible without your support. I hope our April lineup inspires you to get outdoors and explore something new.
Sincerely,
Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

TPT National Productions: An Unprecedented Year and a Look to the Future
2022 was an extraordinary year for the National Productions team at Twin Cities PBS.
suicide. Additionally, a community-engagement campaign involving 10 PBS stations around the country provided local coverage and on- the-ground resources to engage communities around this critical public health issue. PBS relies on TPT’s National Productions team to provide inclusive and diverse storytelling for general audiences. The features and series cover important issues and topics Americans are facing today, showcasing stunning and intimate filmmaking and reflecting the diversity of the American experience. Michael Rosenfeld, TPT’s Vice President of National Productions, states, “We look for stories that will interest a national audience because the topic has universal appeal. It’s about finding a subject matter that touches us as human beings, wherever we may live. And, of course, stories that unfold right here in Minnesota are often interesting or important enough to ‘go national.’ For example, one of our episodes from the last season of America Outdoors was filmed in the Boundary Waters area, and it got an audience in all 50 states.”
They produced the national PBS series America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston , which reached over 10 million viewers, received tremendous viewer and critical acclaim, inspired people to explore the outdoors, and spurred important conversations about climate change, equity, outdoor access, and our relationship to the world around us. The series has been renewed for season 2, and new episodes will begin airing this summer. The success of America Outdoors was followed up by the release of Facing Suicide . This feature documentary — lauded by experts for its careful and powerful approach — shares the deeply personal stories of those directly affected by the suicide epidemic, as well as insights from specialists and researchers who provide hands- on knowledge about this public health crisis, including how to intervene and save a life. A companion PBS YouTube series creates a space of understanding, hope, and action for young people whose lives have been touched by

Hoop Dreams — the award-winning 1994 documentary following high school basketball players working to reach their dreams of playing in the NBA — put TPT on the map as a producer of national content for primetime viewers of PBS. Since then, the National Productions team has overseen numerous celebrated projects, including Slavery by Another Name (2012), Going to War (2018), When Whales Walked (2019), and The Dictator’s Playbook (2019). The team is composed of Rosenfeld, Fritz Bergmann (Senior Managing Director of National Productions), Abby Gordon (Director of Content Development), Elaine Powell (Sr. Manager of Station Relations), Erin Anzalone (Line Producer), and Syd Stratman (Associate Producer). “A national production often starts with a seed of an idea from our team or an outside producer,” explains Gordon. “We then research the topic and create a format for a show and present it to PBS. Once they sign on, our team gets to work hiring outside production companies if needed, creating budgets, and figuring out how exactly the show is going to come together. Over the
course of a season, we oversee everything from approving stories in episodes, watching edited cuts, organizing community outreach and creating educational programing.” The team is currently working to secure funding to increase TPT’s ability to produce national productions and expand its legacy of creating acclaimed national programming. Simultaneously, they are filming season two of America Outdoors and planning for season two of the America Outdoors companion YouTube series, Understory . Season two of America Outdoors will reflect the geographic diversity of the country by filming across multiple regions and ecosystems, from coastlines to mountains, wetlands, and rivers. You can catch up on season one of the series and watch many of our national productions with PBS Passport using the PBS app. To support America Outdoors or TPT’s production of national projects, please reach out to our Development Department at 651-229-1410 or development@tpt.org .

TPT wants the outdoors to be a place for everyone to explore.
In February, as part of Minnesota Outdoors, TPT partnered with Melanin in Motion, the Loppet Foundation, and the Healing Justice Foundation to host Hello + Winter: Building BIPOC Outdoors Community at Theodore Wirth Park Trailhead. This successful event drew over 100 participants. Anthony Taylor, an outdoor activist and one of the founders of Melanin in Motion, ran the free event. Chance York, host of TPT’s digital series Outside Chance , was in attendance. The event was geared toward communities of color and designed for those who were new to winter outdoor sports. Attendees had the opportunity to learn to cross-country ski, enjoy snacks, and celebrate the outdoors as a space for everyone.

Seed Catalogs: The Promise of Spring By Rosie Wolf Williams
Seed catalogs provide a great source of inspiration for all types of gardeners; there can also be a pleasurable response to having a catalog in your hands versus clicking online. "I planted my first garden when I was three," says Jere Gettle, owner of Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company in Mansfield, Missouri. "I learned to read partly through poring over the seed catalogs that came in the mail. I loved [catalogs], and from early on, I knew I wanted to be involved in the seed business when I got older. I wanted to travel and explore the places where those seeds came from.” The first seed catalog may have been a pamphlet that a London nurseryman named William Lucas sent to his customers. Then, in 1771, an American, William Prince, offered a list of fruit trees he had for sale at his nursery in New York.
As a child, Gettle was aware of the changes in the seed catalogs, noticing many of the old varieties of seeds were starting to disappear from the catalogs and were being replaced by hybrids. "My family moved from Montana to our farm in the Missouri Ozarks when I was 12. I joined Seed Savers Exchange and began trading seeds with other people interested in preserving heirloom varieties," he says. "By the time I was 17, I had enough seeds to sell, and I asked my parents what they thought about publishing a little seed catalog and sending it out to friends, family and other seed savers I knew," he recalls. "The first Baker Creek seed catalog was published in 1998. It was 12 pages long, with listings of about 70 varieties. My mom drew the artwork for the front cover and illustrations inside, and we distributed about 550 copies."
“I knew I wanted to be involved in the seed business when I got older. I wanted to travel and explore the places where those seeds came from.”
"The Smithsonian Institution Libraries have a collection of seed catalogs that include about 10,000 seed and nursery catalogs from 1830 to the present," says Kelly Funk, president of Park Seed in Greenwood, South Carolina. "Park Seed published its first catalog in 1868. The book contained just 8 pages and used two illustrations – wood cuts of an aster and a pansy."

NEXT AVENUE SPECIAL SECTION
The Grand Marais Art Colony, founded in 1947, offers studios, multi-disciplinary spaces and classrooms that lend themselves to aesthetic inquiry and artistic development. "While firmly rooted on the North Shore of Minne - sota in what we like to call the Third Coast, our arts community is at the same time not geographically bound," said Ruth Pszwaro, artistic director. "The external horizon line offers us all an expansiveness that translates to the internal, and we support the stepping stones of learning and growth for those who want to give art a try as well as for those who want to mature in their work," Pszwaro continued. The Art Colony draws as many as 300 adult students each year. They sign up for small in-person classes (with a few virtual options), and explore everything from painting to literary arts to ceramics. Fans also flock to the town each year for the annual Grand Marais Arts Festival in July and the biennial North Shore Readers and Writers Festival in November. Moheb Soliman (above right), an interdisciplinary poet, spent time on the shoreline writing his book "HOMES," which traces the coasts of the five Great Lakes through postmodern poems. Affiliated with the Art Colony for over the past decade, Soliman, 43, has served as a featured presenter at the annual literary festival and headed up a performance project. "They are so supportive of me," Soliman said. "They connect so strongly to the regional community but are aware of themselves as important to the larger region and the country, one node of greater The Arts Flourish in Rural Minnesota By Patricia Corrigan
consciousness of thinking about the Great Lakes — and that is so stimulating to me."
Last summer, Gloria Pfeifer took a class in plein air painting through the Art Colony, and now she's scheduling a workshop in Farwell, a town some 336 miles southwest of Grand Marais. Pfeifer is one of several older adults who over the past six years has helped restore four historic buildings there, turning them into art spaces to display the talents of artists and musicians. All the events take place in the restored one-room schoolhouse, a service garage, a creamery and the Farwell Norwegian Lutheran Church, built in 1907.
