(SL) supplies needy community members with food during difficult times. Last year’s event raised more than $11,000. Food banks help a wide variety of people. For some, times are tough, and have to rely on the assistance of their local food bank. It’s not easy. According to the Ontario Association of Food Banks, there are close to 400,000 visits to food banks per month. Unstable work conditions and salaries, and the rising costs of essentials like food, Hydro, housing, and transportation are some of the things that are forcing Ontarians to choose between putting food on the table and paying the bills. The Food Banks rely on donations from the community and from sponsors to keep their shelves stocked. The Vankleek Hill Food Bank has a second-hand store to help with funds, but most of what they rely on comes from the community. The Food Bank will also help out people who might need clothing to go for an interview. Donations to the Vankleek Hill Food Bank can be made by contacting 613-678-8119. Students wishing to donate their time can use the hours for community service.
