Kewanee PT &Rehab Specialists Back Story Of NIC INTERIAL, PT

My journey in becoming a Physical Therapist started out very similar to many other professionals working in our field today. As a child, teenager, and young adult much of my life was spent playing sports. Like any other athlete, during the time I spent playing sports, I suffered a few injuries. These injuries allowed me to experience Physical Therapy first hand, which sparked my interest and desire to pursue Physical Therapy as a career. My time spent in Physical Therapy as an athlete had shown me what it meant to be a professional, help others, and be a pillar of your community, which is something I wanted from that point on. It wasn’t until I started my Physical Therapy schooling did a passion develop for human anatomy and its’ application in Physical Therapy. Once this happened, the sky was the limit for me, and I was committed to pursuing and becoming a Physical Therapist whole heartedly. I started my schooling in 2006-2010 at Northern Illinois University where I obtained my Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training. This gave me the very fortunate opportunity to start my athletic training career here at Kewanee PhysicalTherapy and Rehab Specialists under the supervision of our Physical Therapists. Trying to retain as much information as I could, this valuable experience expanded my knowledge base and provided me with information to use during my Physical Therapy education. In 2012-2015 I continued my higher education in the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Northern

Illinois University. I completed my degree in May of 2015 and began my career as a Physical Therapist in August 2015 here at Kewanee Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists. I feel so very fortunate and blessed to be a part of this profession, providing Physical Therapy to our community, at the standard of care we strive for here in our clinics. Thank you for allowing me to serve all of your physical therapy needs!

STAND UP TO SCIATICA “You Can’t Enjoy The Holidays In Pain!”

INSIDE: • Relieving Back Pain Naturally • Tasty Holiday Recipe • Relieve Back Pain In Minutes • Patient Success Spotlight

Do you experience pain in the buttock, leg, or even your foot? If so, you may be experiencing sciatica. Sciatica is a common form of back and leg pain that is often misunderstood by sufferers. People frequently have questions about what sciatica is, why it occurs and how to find relief from the intense pain it can cause from the low back down to the feet. If you are suffering from sciatica, it is important to find its root cause. Many people often think an x-ray or expensive MRI is first needed to figure out what is causing pain. Having a lot of tests doesn’t mean you will find its root cause. Recent studies show that nearly 1 million of MRIs done for sciatica fail to find a treatable cause. With a new imaging technique called magnetic resonance neurography, 69% of the patients were found to have a trapped sciatic nerve deep in the buttock by a muscle called the

piriformis. It is known that in about 25% of the general population, the sciatic nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle and can be susceptible to abnormal pressure and irritation. Why Does Sciatica Occur? If there are changes in posture, muscle strength or pelvic alignment, the nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. It even reaches down to the foot and therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, the consequent ache can be felt anywhere from the base of the spine, the buttocks or the back of the thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in the toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE WINTER? Benefits Of Getting Assistance For Shoveling Snow

Avoid shoveling whenever possible If you have lower back pain, snow shoveling is one of those activities that you should avoid whenever possible. Here are some options to get you started thinking about how to avoid shoveling this year. Find a volunteer to clear your snow. Many local nonprofit organizations, such as Boy Scouts, high schools and church youth programs require teens and young adults to provide a certain number of service hours in their community. Assisting someone with back pain by shoveling their driveways and walkways will almost always count towards their required minimumof service hours, so it’s a win-win: they will be helping you by shoveling your snow and you will be helping them fulfill their service requirements. If you fear you will or have injured your back while shoveling, contact us today to schedule an appointment. Our physical therapists will proceed with any necessary treatment, to help you return to a pain free and active life.
