Skydiving in Scottsdale OUR TEAM TRIP TO SUNNY ARIZONA

After such a long winter, I know we’re all ready to enjoy the gifts of summer. Here at the office, we kicked off the summer with a big team trip down to Scottsdale, Arizona. I planned this

they are. These habits have been part of the office for years, but this was the first Whitehall seminar for some of our new team members. It was cool to see things click with them as to why we run the office the way we do.

Saturday morning, we met with our Whitehall coach, Laura, for private team training. She dug deeper into what we learned at the seminar the day before and how we could apply those skills to our office. It was great to talk more in depth about what we learned. When you’re in the office,

your time is spent with patients or putting out fires. It’s nice to connect as a team and talk about how we run the office and what we can do to make it better. Everyone had great ideas!

trip to attend an office training seminar sponsored by Whitehall Management. Of course, flying eight hours for a one-day seminar didn’t sound like much fun — no matter how educational the seminar is — so we turned it into a full team-bonding weekend. A trip with nine people could be hectic, but Mindy took charge of all the planning. If you need an itinerary, there’s no one better than Mindy. She likes to have her t’s crossed and her i’s dotted before we head out the door. On Wednesday afternoon, we all carpooled from the office to the airport, and two time zones later, we were in Arizona just in time to call it a night. Thursday morning, we took a group Segway tour through Old Town Scottsdale. There were some hesitations at first, but no one crashed, and everyone had a blast. Scottsdale is a great city, and the Segways offered a neat way to explore it all. The afternoon was for chilling by the pool, and that evening, we regrouped for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. On Friday morning at 9 a.m., everyone buckled down for the Whitehall Home Office Training. This great seminar lasted all day and focused on how we as a team can make the whole experience of going to the dentist easier and less frightening for our patients. We’ve worked with Whitehall since 2014, and they’ve offered great advice for treating our patients like the VIPs

Before we returned home with our new ideas, we went skydiving — indoor skydiving, that is. Scottsdale is home to iFLY, a massive wind tunnel that lets you feel the thrill of skydiving without jumping out of a plane. The wind is so powerful that you become completely weightless, spinning around and tumbling through the air. It proved to be one of the best parts of our trip. I’d love to go again, though thankfully, no one had to skydive during our flight back to Malone the next day.

Mindy flying at iFLY indoor skydiving!

All in all, it was a productive trip. Mindy and I kept glancing at each other, expecting something to go wrong, but it went like a charm was cast over everything! We flew there and back again without a problem, everyone had a great time, and we returned renewed and buzzing with ideas to make the office even better than before. – Dr. Kevin Poupore

WE DO THE MATH ON COUPON CLIPPING Put Down the Scissors and Step Away From the Newspaper

If it wasn’t for coupons, you wouldn’t be able to afford everything you need, right? Well, there are two ways to look at it. Coupons can be a way to put food on the table that you otherwise couldn’t afford. But they can also trick money-conscious consumers into buying stuff they normally wouldn’t. To find out which option describes your situation, answer two questions. The first question is, “Do I need — and will I use — everything that I buy with coupons?” Coupons affect you psychologically; the same part of your brain that governs basic instincts (like hunger and pleasure) also loves a screaming good deal. That means you may spend money on things that you normally wouldn’t, because you have a coupon for them. Instead, stick to the staples — like rice, beans, oats, and salt — that you’ll use eventually and won’t go bad. If you’ve wanted something for a long time and it goes on sale, it makes sense to buy. But don’t let the coupon section dictate your desires! The second question is, “How much is my time worth, and how much time do I spend hunting down the best deals and clipping coupons?” If you’re saving $25 a week on stuff you actually need, but it takes 4 hours a week to get those savings, you’re losing money, even if you make minimum wage. That’s time you could be spending with family, picking up a half-shift at work, or finding innovative ways to make money.

Remember: Coupons come from businesses trying to trick your brain into buying more stuff. Use them wisely, but don’t let them rule you.

THE BUZZ ABOUT TOOTH VIBRATORS

The OrthoAccel Technologies’ AcceleDent System, which received FDA clearance in 2011, is a hands-free, rechargeable, removable mouthpiece that patients with braces wear for 20 minutes a day to dramatically speed up tooth movement. Patients often liken the soft vibrations to a gentle massage. “It is fast, safe, and gentle orthodontics,” Mike Lowe, CEO of OrthoAccel, said. “You get out of braces in half the time; we have consistently seen that.” The technology behind AcceleDent is a concept borrowed from the orthopedic world. Instead of using plaster casts on broken or fractured bones, a vibrating cup can be used to help reduce pain and speed up healing, which in turn results in a stronger heal in the bone. When considering the mechanics of movement, a simple mouth vibrator makes a certain kind of sense.

In a randomized controlled clinical trial out of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, this vibration accelerated tooth movement by 106 percent during the initial alignment phase, and then 38 to 50 percent later, all without adverse events. The most obvious benefit of AcceleDent is that it cuts braces-wearing time in half. For adults with braces, the decision to use AcceleDent is a no-brainer. The stigma of adult braces is still strong, and many adults would jump at the chance to reduce treatment time. Braces usually require adjustments every few months, and AcceleDent reduces the pain that can sometimes make it difficult for patients to talk and eat. Unfortunately, the amount of time you use the AcceleDent doesn't directly correlate to how soon you get your braces off. It’s

been found to be most effective with the recommended 20 minutes per day treatment, but prolonged use can actually hinder its effectiveness. As of 2015, OrthoAccel has shipped nearly 40,000 units to 2,500 practices nationwide. The device tacks on $500 to a standard braces bill, but many patients say the cost is well worth the speedy results.

GET UP OFFA THAT THING!

If You Want to Live More, Sit Less “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.” Those are the words of Dr. James Levine, who made headlines back in 2014 when he released the results of years of research into what’s really killing Americans. Just as cigarette use was killing Americans in droves back when the population still smoked, the prevalence of desk jobs is a huge health risk today. Humans, it turns out, are meant to be on their feet and on the go, just like our ancestors were. “We have created for ourselves a modern way of living that clashes with the way we’re meant to be,” Levine says. We’ve seen that sitting can also lead to other health issues, like carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, and strained eyes and muscles. And if you’re not in good shape (because you sit all day at work), you’re more likely to get injured doing other activities in your life.

especially if you work a desk job. We recommend getting up at least once an hour and walking around for a few minutes. Even a trip to the water cooler is better than nothing! But the real way to combat a sedentary job is to live an active life after hours. A lot of us want to plop down in front of the TV, but we’d be better off taking a long walk after work and spending some time cooking in the kitchen — on our feet, of course.

You can also go to a standing desk, or even a treadmill desk — which Levine invented.

Levine says that, ideally, you should spend four hours a day on your feet. Of course, that may not be an option for many of you,

Destination: Happy People VISIT THE HAPPIEST PLACES IN THE WORLD — IT’S CONTAGIOUS

Gates of the Arctic, Alaska’s 663,000 square miles are filled to the brim with the wonders of nature. The Happiest Country in the World Denmark has long been the standard-bearer in this category. This year, it relinquished the title to

Visit a hustling, bustling tourist trap and what do you get? Crowds of competitive travelers and a local population that is sick to death of them. Visit a place with happy people, and you get good service, friendly faces, and you’ll learn firsthand what Harvard researchers affirmed in a 2012 study: Happiness is contagious. Luckily for the average traveler, the places that topped a nationwide Gallup poll and the United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report have plenty to offer in addition to cheerful locals. If we were to tell you that Hawaii is the happiest state in the country, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. And sure enough, Hawaii ranked first in overall happiness for the sixth consecutive year. The sunny beaches, rich culture, and perfect weather give tourists a taste of paradise that the natives enjoy all year long. Next in line is a state that has little in common with the Aloha State. Alaska came in second place for the third consecutive year. With eight national parks, including Denali, Glacier Bay, and The Happiest States in the U.S.

its Scandinavian sister. Norway is home to some of the most breathtaking vistas on earth, most notably its western fjords like the world-famous Geirangerfjord and Nærøfjord. For the city wanderer, you’ll find choice seaside restaurants and walkable streets in towns like Bergen, the country’s second-largest city, which sports rainbow architecture and a 15th-century waterfront. Knowing the heart of a destination begins and ends with its people. Tack on beautiful scenery and daydream-worthy activities, and you just found yourself the perfect vacation.
