911 mistake calls Cellphones, iPhones, Bluetooth and all sorts of portable phone devices are more and more common. Also more common now are acci- dental 911 calls. Russell County OPP report 44 “pocket dial” accidental 911 calls received since Sept. 25 this year.To avoid such accidental calls, cellphone owners can use the keypad lock programming feature of their phone to “lock up” the keypad when the phone is not in use. The keypad reactivates or “unlocks” when the owner presses the password on the pad. Also, cellphone users should check if the cellphone has an “off switch” mode for the 911 auto-dial feature. Police also recommend not putting 911 on a phone’s speed dial setup. If an accidental 911 call happens, police ask cellphone owners to stay on the line and explain to the dispatcher that the call was unintentional.When a 911 caller hangs up without responding to the dispatcher, it is assumed that the caller may be in trouble and the 911 dispatch system tries to track the origin of the call and then notifies police. – Gregg Chamberlain

La Ville de Hawkesbury travaille à un im- portant projet de modernisation de son service d’eau municipale afin de combler plusieurs fuites importantes de son réseau d’aqueduc. Le problème a été découvert en août, lors d’une vérification de l’installation. Les équipes de travail de la Ville ont ralenti et réduit la quantité d’eau perdue à cause des fuites et la situation a été rapportée à l’admi- nistration et au conseil municipal dans un rapport de Richard Guertin, le surintendant du service de l’eau. The Town of Hawkesbury has its works dealing with a leakage problem in the municipal water system. The amount of water leaking out is about 500,000 litres a day. A contributing factor to the situation may be that some of the municipal water lines are several decades old and have become weaker as they aged and more susceptible to leakage.
