An estate plan is the only way to make certain your assets will go where you want them to go. It is also the place you can name the person you would want to settle your affairs when you pass. For families with young children, a plan is the document in which you can name guardians for minor children. Planning your estate is the most basic act of stewardship. You spent your life using the gifts God gave you. What will happen to your assets when you are gone? Don’t leave that to chance. Whether you decide to use a will or a living trust, find a Christian financial advisor and a good Christian lawyer who can help you make good decisions in this area. You can help Christian ministries by designating a part of your estate as gifts to them. This is a powerful way to help your local church, the ministries you support, and missionaries who serve the Lord. Make sure you have designated someone to have power of attorney. That person will take care of all your affairs after you are gone. Plan your own funeral. Who would you like to speak? What hymns do you want sung? Which Scriptures do you want read? Make a list of personal things you would like to have given to certain people. If you want to be a good steward and a good finisher, you need to get everything in order. Estate planning for the Christian should never begin in an attorney’s office. It starts on your knees, submitting to His guidance with open hands and open hearts. He will take care of the people we love, and He will also provide for the ministries that have been important to us. Our greatest desire should be to hear His voice and to get involved where He is working. I hope you’ll take my words to heart. Your family will thank you after you are gone.
