A TRIBUTE TO OUR LATE PUP, HAILEY

WHAT DOGS CAN TEACH US ABOUT LIFE AND LOVE

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always considered myself a dog person. Their wagging tails, goofy smiles, and palpable joy resonated with me as a child, and in the years since, I can’t help but feel delightfully overwhelmed when I meet a new dog. But even though my admiration for canines is deep-seated, it wasn’t until last month, when my wife and I had to put our sweet pup Hailey to sleep, that I truly realized the lingering impact a dog can have on one’s life. When Rachel and I first started dating in college, we had two beautiful puppies, Hailey, a 6-month-old boxer mix, and Clyde, a 4-month-old Great Dane. As you can imagine, their undeniable puppy cuteness won us over quickly, and in the 11 years since they joined our family, they brought such magic and adventure into our lives. So a few weeks ago when Hailey started coughing, we sensed something was wrong and took our sweet girl to the vet. The X-ray was questionable, so they recommended us to a specialist, but her cough progressed so quickly that we couldn’t wait for the appointment. We paid an emergency visit to the specialist

who then gave us the news we sensed might come but dreaded wholeheartedly: We could expect to spend only a couple more weeks with her. “WHILE HAVING TO ACCLIMATE TO LIFE WITHOUT ONE OF OUR BEST FRIENDS HAS CERTAINLY BEEN TOUGH, I’VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME LATELY THINKING ABOUT THE WAYS HAILEY ENRICHED OUR LIVES OVER THE PAST DECADE.” While having to acclimate to life without one of our best friends has certainly been tough, I’ve spent a lot of time lately thinking about the

ways Hailey enriched our lives over the past decade. Thinking about the lessons she taught me about life and love has made her passing a little bit easier for me, so I thought I’d share them with you, too. LOYALTY. It’s long been determined that the domesticated dogs we know and love today descended from wolves in the wild. I’ve always found it fascinating (albeit not that surprising) that wolves choose to live in packs. The loyalty each member of the pack displays toward one another seemed to adapt into the

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Dogs can teach humans so much about love, relationships, and caring for someone else without conditions. Regardless of how often my mood wavered, Hailey approached, treated, and loved me exactly the same. As humans, we struggle with this feat, but if we could all eradicate the conditions we place on our relationships with our friends and family, I honestly believe the world would be a better place. ACCEPTANCE. Dogs don’t hold grudges. If there was a day where I was particularly busy and forgot to give Hailey a treat at the time that I usually do, she didn’t hold it against me. She might have sensed something was missing, but she was just as excited to accept the gift the next time around. Hailey was always quick to forgive, and she never held grudges. And as I sit and

think about all her great qualities, I can’t help but wonder how great life would be if all us humans could take a page out of her book. Any pet owner knows that the sad reality of bringing an animal into your world is that they will eventually pass away, but that doesn’t make the relationship and adventure you share any less meaningful. Spending the last 11 years with Hailey taught me to never take a close friendship, a sunny day, or a comfy bed for granted and to love the ones you’re with for as long as you can. Thanks for everything, Hailey. You really were man’s best friend.

RALEIGH TOPS THE CHARTS AS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO RETIRE WHERE SHOULD YOU BUY YOUR NEXT HOME

According to a SmartAsset analysis of U.S. government data, Florida, Arizona, and our very own North Carolina topped the list when it comes to the states where retirees are moving after years of working elsewhere. This information comes as no surprise, considering the senior- friendly reputations, warm weather, and comparatively low taxes. Florida took the lead because it ranked first in affordability and seventh in quality of life. It was followed by Arizona, though North Carolina came in at a close third place. This study also determined which cities took in the most retirees. Raleigh ranked No. 8 on the list! In fact, in 2016, a reported 2,015 seniors made themselves a new home in Raleigh. While statistics like these can be helpful, ultimately your choice of where to

retire will be a personal one. Friendly weather, quality health care, and affordable housing are concerns that impact everyone, but you might also want to think about a few other factors. For example, the proximity of your new home to your friends and family, its pet- friendliness, the abundance of resources that suit your hobbies and interests, and how far you would have to move from your current home to get there are all important variables to consider. Dreams you’ve been storing up for decades are important, too. For example, if you’ve always pictured yourself strolling down the beach in your golden years, states like South Dakota with their long, frigid winters probably aren’t for you. Given its popularity among older populations, you might even consider sticking in Raleigh for the long haul.

Tools like Bestplacestoretire.com’s “Where Should I Retire?” quiz and MarketWatch’s retirement calculator, which picks your top city based on how much certain factors matter to you, are good places to start your process of elimination. Of course, if you have any questions about the financial side of retirement, don’t hesitate to give Patriot Wealth a call.

You’re moved into your retirement home — now what? Well, considering you’ve been working toward this moment for decades, it’s time to celebrate! And while we’d certainly advocate for a housewarming party, there’s another kind of celebration to consider that will make your life easier for years to come: investing in your home. Features like those listed below will add value to your house and help pick up the slack when you slow down. If you’re a tea or pour-over coffee drinker, having hot water at your fingertips without the need to put a kettle on will save you time and effort every morning. The dispenser also eliminates one of the times you’d need to use the stove, decreasing the likelihood of a fire if you forget to turn off the burner. Tank and faucet systems start around $200 and are usually quick to install. The cost of a central vacuum system varies from home to home, but if you have a bad back or creaky knees then doing away with the need to stoop over to pick up a dustpan or empty a conventional vacuum bag is worth the money. Using a network of openings around the house that suck in debris swept their way, these convenient systems gather all of your dust in a single place for disposal. SMART INVESTMENTS FOR YOUR RETIREMENT HOME TREAT YOURSELF! INSTANT HOT WATER DISPENSER CENTRAL VACUUM SYSTEM Smart devices can be installed in your home to take care of turning on the lights, starting the coffee brewing, or even having your groceries delivered. Dream up any convenience you’d like and type it into Google — we guarantee there’s a robot for that. If you want to start small, even a $30 Google Home Mini can play your favorite music on voice command, so you don’t have to leave your chair. HOME SMART DEVICES
