Dayton (OH) Alumni Balances Safety and Service
L ike most chapters, The Dayton (Oh) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was faced with the daunting task of balancing the safety of the chapter members with the need for fraternity and service during the pandemic. Polemarch Brother Chris- topher Surratt made the easy decision of putting the safety of its members at the forefront of all activities of the Paul Wayman Caine Chapter of the Year 1983, 2019 (Medium). Brother Surratt, being a technology professional began to utilize (like many) platforms like Zoom, Mailchimp, Facebook, and Instagram to keep the chapter informed, and engaged during the whole of 2020. In Partnership with the under- graduates of the Iota Mu Chapter (The University of Dayton) and the Xi Tau Chapter (Wright State University), Day- ton Alumni kick of the year raising funds to aid in paying the insurance for these undergraduate chapters. The last face to face program of 2020 due to COVID restrictions aided in all of our chapters being fully compliant. As we all know being able to modify at a moment’s notice is the hallmark of all good Kappa men, and the men of Dayton Alumni are no acceptation.
and Columbus Alumni took an opportu- nity to stay in touch by creating “Nupes on the Links”, an occasion for us to stay connected, while getting some exercise after being on lockdown earlier in the summer of 2020. The months of September and October for the Dayton (OH) Alumni Chapter where all about getting our community registered and informed during the 2020 voting season. COVID compliant voter registration drives with members of the Dayton Kappa League, and “When we all vote” registration webinar via YouTube and Facebook were two initiatives launched during these months in our service to the Dayton Community. The chapter continued its partner- ship with the undergraduate chapters in the area and solidified different oppor- tunities to collaborate throughout the Dayton, OH community. The Chapter quickly pivoted on online programing starting with the “Building Black Wealth Through Home Owner- ship Webinar,” with our partners at Fifth Third Bank, Dayton Weekly New, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, and The Day- ton Defender. In July of 2020 during “The Big Read” a community wide reading initiative, our very own immediate past Polemarch Brother Brian Martin was a key panelist on the discussion of the New York Times Bestseller “Me and White Supremacy” by author Layla F. Saad. This discussion centered around understanding white privilege and participation in white supremacy. This often-unconscious behavior which aids in the subjugation and disenfranchise- ment of Black and Brown people, can only be eradicated via honest and open discussion and understanding. The dis- cussion was open to the entire Dayton community via Facebook and enjoyed much success. During the month of August, it was hard to resist the gorgeous greens and the pleasant, often competitive fellow- ship that comes along with a round of golf.
