Meet the sharpshooter: Matthew Grouchy
His Uncle Buck did not quite make the lineup with the Red Wings, which gives Grouchy one goal for himself in giving the family name an NHL legacy if he can. First, though, he’s got his goal-shooting sights set on making a top junior A club or maybe a college or university hockey team after he graduates from the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA). «Whatever gives me the best offer,» he said, adding that, while his other post-CIHA goals include studying criminology at uni- versity or college, as far as he is concerned there is no other sport to play but Canada’s game. «It’s the only sport I grew up playing.»

If he had a hockey nickname, Matthew Grouchy might be known as “The Sniper” for his goal-shooting skill. The kid from Canada’s easternmost province does not take sole credit for his ability to make points, though. “I play with good guys,” Grouchy said. “We got chemistry. We work well together; know where we are on the ice.” As far as he is concerned, hockey is not a gamemade for «hotdogging» or hogging the puck. Not if a team wants to win. «You can’t be all individuals on the ice,» he said. «You have to work together.» Grouchy’s passion for hockey began early, likemany of his fellow academy teammates. He can recall wanting to play when he was four or five years old. «My whole family was into hockey, I grew up with hockey,» he said. «My great-uncle, Uncle Buck (Hannanford), he had a lot to do with Detroit.»

As winter wanes and the first day of spring approaches, the yells of “Slamdunk!” will give way to “Batter up!” as Hammond’s high school athletes turn out for spring training for the baseball season. At St. Francis Xavier High School (SFX), Coach Dave MacKinnon expects tryouts for the varsity boys’ baseball and girls’ soft- ball teams will both begin either late April or early May, depending on weather and ground conditions. “Once the weather turns and things dry up,” MacKinnon said, adding that this will be the fourth year for the SFX Falcons varsity baseball team and the third for the girls’ softball squad. “We started it (baseball program) from the ground up,” he said, “and we’ve improved every year.” The first SFX had a baseball team in the Prescott-Russell Secondary School Athletic Associations league (PRSSAA), MacKinnon had all grade 11 and 12 players on the roster. Over the years, Coach MacKinnon has been able to replace the ranks of the Falcons baseball graduating veterans with junior players who joined the team at grades 9 and 10, learned the skills, and helped keep the team swinging and hitting season after season. “I have a good core group of young players,” said Coach MacKinnon, “and we have, overall, a team full of good athletes, with a lot of the guys playing other sports.” The PRSSAA League has also grown and improved over the past four years. It began with three teams, including SFX. Now com- peting over a series of regular league games are SFX, L’Escale in Rockland, Casselman, and two teams from Russell Township’s St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School, and Russell High School.
