Falcons finish basketball season

SFX ended zero-and-two for its matches at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (EOSSAA) cham- pionships in Renfrew during the last week of February. First game they played was against their namesake counterparts, the Holy Trinity Falcons, ranked second in the championship list versus SFX’s fourth seed ranking. Stoqua noted that the SFX Falcons still held the Holy Trinity Falcons to a narrow win, with the game finishing seven points up on the scoreboard for Holy Trinity when the buzzer sounded. “They (Holy Trinity) got into an early lead, by 11 points, in the second period,” Stoqua said. “We scrapped back, played really good defence; the closest we got was that seven points right on to the end. Zach Barber and Matt Burns were our main shooters.” The second EOSSAA match for SFX was against MacKenzie from Deep River. The final score finished 56-42 for Mackenzie. “We started out well, only down by three points at the half,” said Stoqua, addingMac- Kenzie surged ahead in the final quarters. “Sam Lessard was our main shooter, and he had a great first half. Second half, we did a better job of containing their big guy (shooter).” Stoqua noted that during the second half, SFX forcedMacKenzie to gomore for outside

the zone shots on the hoop, which helped slow the Deep River team down. But the Falcons were not able to capitalize as much on their own outside shooting opportunities, which allowed Mackenzie to creep further ahead. With the end of the basketball season, Stoqua’s own attention turns towards coa-

ching track and field at SFX in the spring. But he has high hopes for next year’s SFX Falcons when basketball season rolls around again and there is another chance to qualify for EOSSAA. “Very excited for next year,” he said. “Most of our (veteran) players will be coming back. The core is going to be there.”

Hoops season is over at St. Francis Xavier High School. Falcons’ Coach Scott Stoqua is more than satisfiedwith the past season for Hammond’s senior boys’ basketball team. “It was good,” Stoqua said. “Our overall goal was to win the Prescott-Russell (title), which we did, and to compete at EOSSAA, which we did.”
