Christ did not give up His deity. He emp tied Himself of His glory. The next step down was taken as He “took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.” What condescension! We behold the Cre ator taking upon Himself the form of one of His own creatures. Let us never for get, however, that while He had the form of man, He had none of man’s sin, for He was the Perfect One, who “knew no sin” (2 Cor. 5:21), and He “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15). Going still deeper, “He humbled him self, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Again what con descension 1 What love! He did it all for us. We cannot cease to marvel that the Lord of glory should definitely choose such shame, should so humble Himself. What a depth of pathos there is in the phrase: “even the death of the cross” ! In view of all His self-abasement, how gracious the words sound now: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” The Spirit of Christ is in every believer, that God may reproduce this same life. We cannot in our own strength be imitators, but we can allow the Holy Spirit to work in us to produce the “mind . . . which was also in Christ Jesus.” The Lord Jesus Christ desires to live in us, and if we will yield our wills to Him and let Him have His way with us, all vainglory will be gone. What joy and blessedness will be ours if we obey the commands: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus,” and, “Learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
Leader’s Helps I. F or T hee ! I spent long years for thee (1 Tim. 1:15), In weariness and woe (Isa. 53:3), That an eternity (John 17:24) Of joy thou mightest know (John 16:22). I spent long years for thee (John 1:10, 11) ; Hast thou spent one for Me (1 Pet. 4:2) ? And I have brought to thee (John 4:10, 14), Down from My home above (John 3:13), Salvation full and free (Rev. 22:17), My pardon and my love (Acts 5:3,1). Great gifts I brought to thee (Eph. 4:8) ; What hast thou brought to Me (Rom. 12 : 1 ) ?. Oh, let thy life be given,(Rom. 6:13), Thy years for Him be spent (2 Cor. 5:15), World-fetters all be riven (Phil. 3 :8) And joy with suffering blent (1 Pet. 4:13- 16). I gave Myself for thee (Eph. 5 :2) ; Give thou thyself to Me (Prov. 23:26) ! — F r a n c e s R id l e y H a v erg a l . II. I n H is W ill A brilliant young student who went to Africa, and died after a year’s work, said: “I think it is with African missions as with the building of a great bridge. You know how many stones have to be buried in the earth, all unseen, for a foun dation. If Christ wants me to be one of the unseen stones lying in an African grave, I am content, for I shall be in His will.” Such “unknown” heroes shall yet be “well known” (2 Cor. 6 :9) in the day of “the recompense of the reward” (Heb. 11 : 26 ).—S elected .
