The ‘New Normal’: Sustainability In A Post-Pandemic World BY TOM MURRAY So, if you have been following the news on the pandemic, you will have heard that when all is said and done, we will be entering a “new normal”. Frankly, I rather enjoyed the old normal. However, be that as it may be, let’s talk a bit about the new normal and how sustainability might play a role in defining it.

Coastal Group Acquires Veecor

Holland, Michigan based Coastal Group, a family investment management compa- ny, has acquired Veecor, a Louisiana based honeycomb packaging manufacturer. With the acquisition, Coastal Group has launched Coastal Honeycomb, LLC, which will produce the lightweight, durable packaging material in Holland and create an initial 12 jobs. The acquisition adds honeycomb to Coast- al Group’s range of packaging services that include design, testing, corrugated, packag- ing supplies and foam. “Coastal Honeycomb adds another com- petence to the growing suite of Coastal Group businesses all centered around an expertise in personal and product safety through high- ly engineered energy management systems,” said Paul Doyle, Coastal Group CEO. “Coast- al is the leader in protecting occupants in all forms of transportation and the products they are transporting.” Veecor has produced honeycomb pack- aging for over 50 years. In addition to pro- duction, Veecor manufactured and designed the honeycomb production equipment used by over 40 companies in the U.S. today. Key

First, let’s find an aspirational goal for what sustainability may look like in the new normal. We don’t have to look far to find one. Although the pandemic has been awful and terrifying, it has, unexpectedly, pro- vided for us a glimpse of what our environment might look like with a full expression of sustainability in the new normal. Some are referring to it as a natural experiment. With most of the globe in lockdown, flights canceled, cars idle and factories operating at base levels, we are see- ing significant reductions in the emission of air contaminants and the discharge of water pollutants. For example, in the canals in Venice, Italy, the water is so clear that for the first time in recent memory the locals are reporting that fish are now visible and that the swans have returned. For the first time in some 30 years, residents of Punjab, India, are enjoying the grandeur of the Himalayan mountain range, visible now from more than 100 miles away. Los Angeles, California, before and after the coronavirus lockdown. The re- duction of carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide emissions has resulted in the lifting of the city’s notorious smog. that will combine the best aspects of market knowledge, engineering/design, manufacturing and service of both Baysek and DPi,” says Stu Brownell, DPi Director of Cor-

With the DPi partnership, Baysek will focus on custom- ized stand-alone printers that print sheets to be fed into

any number of converting machines, includ- ing Baysek diecutters. “If set up correctly, one high-speed digital printer could feed multiple converting machines very efficient- ly,” Helbach says. The companies also have conceptual drawings for a direct integra- tion of a Baysek C170 diecutter, but to date, have not installed one direct. Customer Specific “One of the keys to the Baysek/DPi part- nership is the willingness to custom-build machines to fit customer’s specific applica- tions,” Brownell says. “We realize that dig- ital printing is new to industrial box makers and is evolving as customers begin to understand its poten- tial. DPi and Baysek want customers to ‘think outside of the box,’ and do not want to limit that thinking by only making specific machines.” The companies will design and build printing systems of any width with spot col- or configurations that can print at speeds up to 650 fpm and four-color process con- figurations in speeds up to 330 fpm. “Our focus is boxes printed on uncoated sub- strates printed with low cost water-based inks, which allow the box maker to have a cost structure similar to flexo, but with all of the advantages of digital printing,” Brownell says. Those advantages include no setups or wash ups, printing plates or flute crush and higher quality printing. “The proliferation of SKUs has created more shorter runs, which means more box Stu Brownell

False Arguments Are Promoting Post-Consumer Recycled Content BY JOHN MULLINDER

Don’t get me wrong. I fully support the use of more post-consumer ma- terial in packaging and products. Just not some of the BS that goes with

it. And this is important because governments are stipulating post-consumer content without knowing all the facts. Here are some of the false claims being made: False Claim # 1: That post-consumer is ‘environ- mentally better’ than pre-consumer content. Set- ting aside the big question of what ‘environmentally better’ actually means, I am not aware of any scien-

tific evidence that one is ‘better’ than the other. In fact, they are really the same material, just coming from different places along the supply chain. In the paper industry, for example, there is no difference in the way that pre-consumer and post-consumer paper or board is originally manufac-

tured in a mill. It is exactly the same material with the same environmental production inputs. The only difference is that they come back to the recy- cling mill from a different place (one from a converting operation and the other from the back of factories, supermarkets, offices or homes). In fact, it could be argued that pre-consumer has a lower environmental impact overall because it travels a shorter recycling loop back to the mill. False Claim # 2 : That post-consumer is ‘more circular’ than pre-con- sumer. Not true. Isn’t the circular economy all about minimising waste? So, what could be more circular than minimizing waste at the converting stage? Pre-consumer material is like the off-cuts left after you cut a sewing pattern from cloth. Since you’ve already paid for the cloth, you make sure your design makes maximum use of the cloth you have. And what you have left over you send back (in the paper industry’s case) to a mill to be incorporated into another recycled content product. Nothing is wasted. Sounds pretty circular to me. False Claim # 3 : That post-consumer is ‘better’ because it replaces virgin material. Hogwash. Both pre-consumer and post-consumer replace CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

virgin material. Both were made in a mill (once) and both are now recycled again (potentially many times). And now for the unintended consequences of push- ing 100 percent post-consumer content. If a company or a government specifies only 100 percent post-consumer content, what’s going to happen? Some suppliers may be able to produce only 100 percent post-consumer content, but who’s going to verify it? Those off-cuts mentioned ear- lier will still be coming to a paper recycling mill from other customers. What’s the mill or converter supposed to do with them now? Dump them? That would not exactly meet the ideals of a circular economy now, would it? And what about a mill tempted to add just a little bit of pre-consumer to the mix? Who will know, except the mill? There are also physical limitations of the material to bear in mind. Wood fibres, for example, can only be re- cycled between four and nine times before they become too short and thin to be used again. So, if all paper was required to be 100 percent recycled content, it wouldn’t be too long before you couldn’t make paper at all. An infusion of virgin fibre is always required somewhere in the system to keep the whole recycling loop going. So, what’s the solution? By all means specify a recy- cled content number, but give the industry the flexibility to meet the target by not specifying how much should be

pre-consumer and how much post-consumer. There is far less pre-consumer material out there (because companies are economically motivated to reduce their production costs). And once it’s gone, it’s gone. If companies need more recycled content to make their products or packag- ing, they’ll be forced to get it from post-consumer sources. That’s how the market works. That’s why the corrugated box industry started targeting residential sources of used paper decades ago. It couldn’t get enough from industrial sources. John Mullinder is Executive Director of the Paper & Pa- perboard Packaging Environmental Council (PPEC), which lobbies governments, networks with other industry play- ers, co-ordinates action industry-wide, develops practical solutions, and promotes the environmental performance and achievements of the industry as a whole.

St. Louis, Missouri based BW Packaging Systems, the packaging machinery arm of Barry-Wehmiller, is bringing a virtual exhibit hall experience directly to customers. Begin- ning June 1, 2020, and continuing through May 2021, BW Packaging Systems will host a online exhibit to showcase the collective packaging capabilities of Barry-Wehmiller companies Accraply, BW Flexible Systems, BW Integrated Systems, Pneumatic Scale Angelus and Synerlink. PPC Signs On To Single-Use Plastics Joint Letter And Technical Paper The European Union has made a strong push toward sus- tainable practices with their latest Directive (EU) 2019/904. This new guideline reduces the consumption of single-use plastics and, by design, the negative impact such plastic waste has on our environment. However, the language of the initiative as it currently stands incorrectly defines “plastic” to potentially include recyclable, low-impact re- sources like paperboard. As the voice for North American paperboard manu- facturers, PPC has a greener future in mind, which is why we’ve signed this document soliciting an update to the EU’s definition of plastic to be truer to form. Paperboard’s Distinction From Plastic Paperboard is a natural polymer, which means it should not be included in the EU’s new directive. The ECHA Guidance for monomers and polymers for the implementation of REACH April 2012, version 2.0 and Article 3(39) of REACH explain that natural polymers are the result of a polymerization process that has taken place in nature, independently of the extraction process. A non-chemically modified substance is defined under Article 3(40) of REACH as a substance whose chemical structure remains unchanged, even if it has undergone a chemical process or treatment, or a physical mineralogical

transformation, for instance, to remove impurities. In layman’s terms, even when treated, the chemical makeup of paperboard does not change. It can easily break down in the environment and be reused and re- purposed, unlike plastic. The current language notes all chemically-affected polymers regardless of end results, which includes paperboard. However, since its chemical makeup does not actually change, unlike single-use plas- tics, it is sustainable and safe for our environment, there- fore should be left out of these new regulations. In China, scientists are reporting significant declines in carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide emission and in Los Angeles, California, the notorious fog has lifted. While these changes are likely to be short-lived, they do provide for us a snapshot of what our environment like- ly looked like during the pre-industrial age and, most im- portantly, what it could look like again in a post-pandemic industrial era driven by sustainability. So, hold that thought for now. Nobody really knows what will be asked of us in the post-pandemic new normal. We should expect that some lessons learned from the pandemic such as social dis- tancing and disinfection will be in play but it may take a while to re-engage with friends and clients with a simple handshake. The only thing we know for sure is that we will need to change our behavior in some way, shape or form. While we still have some time to self-reflect and before the powers that be regulate our future behaviors, why not take some time now to re-boot our thinking and lay out a plan that will define how we would like to see ourselves post-pandemic. Let me explain what I mean using an example with which I have some familiarity-the new normal for small manufacturers. If you are a small manufacturer (less than 500 employ- ees), it is likely that you are already thinking about how you might need to re-configure your factory floor in the new normal to meet any new social distancing requirements. Allow me to suggest that while you do so, you also take this time to insert some sustainability into your thinking. Here is what I mean. First, reach out to local experts who can work the is- sue with you within the context of what we call a lean and green sustainability assessment. Every state can provide this service through its Manufacturing Extension (MEP) program. Visit www.nist.gov/mep/centers . The MEP is a national network with hundreds of spe- cialists who understand the needs of America’s small manufacturers. The MEP can provide services and access to public and private resources to enhance your growth, improve your productivity, reduce your costs, and expand your capacity. They are funded in part by both the Feder- al government and your state government, which allows them to provide these services at a reasonable cost to you. Second, as you think about re-configuring your floor, reach out to your local university system to see if they offer free energy assessments. Some do and some do not. The MEP can also help you in this regard. Usually, the assess- ments are led by a certified energy expert from the Uni- versity who uses his or her students to collect data from you on your energy usage. Within a few weeks they can provide you a list of recommendations that, when imple- mented, will optimize your energy use and compute for you how their recommendations can translate to cost sav-

ings for you. Visit www.energy.gov/eere/amo/industri- al-assessment-centers-iacs for more information. Third, consider your current energy source. Now might be a good time to look hard at renewable energy options such as solar, wind and geothermal and see if they can work for you. The aforementioned institutions can help. Fourth, one of the more interesting lessons learned from our battle with the pandemic is how nimble manu- facturers can be. Like the Ford Motor Company showed us during World War 2 when Henry Ford was asked by President Roosevelt to modify his assembly line concept from motorcars to airplanes, many manufacturers during the pandemic were able to modify their processes to pro- duce personal protective equipment and other emergen- cy devices.

This might be a good time to review your business port- folio and envisage additional revenue streams that might prove valuable to you in your new normal. And don’t forget to analyze your waste streams. In the new normal there may be businesses who may view your waste as their source material. This concept is called Sustainable Materi- als Management. It is highly likely that the new normal will give full sail to this new concept. See www.epa.gov/smm Finally, if you are a manufacturer within the supply chain of an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), now might be a good time to review that OEM’s sustainability strategic plan and its sustainability goals. As you consider any changes to your manufacturing process ensure that they are in line with your OEM’s expectations. A little plan- ning now may give you a competitive edge in the new nor- mal. And, don’t forget to remove and properly recycle old equipment that may contain toxic material such as mercu- ry-containing thermostats. In conclusion, as we emerge from the pandemic let’s be sure that in our haste to recapture the past, we don’t miss opportunities to define a more sustainable future.

inability to attract and retain talent, which had been the top concern for 10 consecutive quarters. Yet half of respon- dents expect workforce challenges to be a concern once the COVID-19 crisis abates. The vast majority of manufacturers have continued operations (67.1 percent or temporarily halted only part of their operations (31.6 percent). Among large manufactur- ers, 50.8 percent are completely operational, while rough- ly 73 percent of small and medium-sized firms state the same. Economic indicators released last week continued to show two things. First, the COVID-19 outbreak and the sharp drop in activity have resulted in historic declines for many economic measures, particularly in March and April. Second, the May data points suggest that the worst of those decreases might be behind us, with some encour- aging bounce backs from record lows, albeit with ongoing negative challenges remaining. • New orders for durable goods plummeted 17.2 percent in April, the largest monthly decline since August 2014. Transportation equipment sales were down a whop- ping 47.3 percent for the month. Core capital goods spending was off 5.8 percent in April. • Regional surveys from the Dallas, Kansas City and Richmond Federal Reserve Banks said that the rate of decline for manufacturing activity slowed in May, but remained quite negative. • Over the past 10 weeks, nearly 40.8 million Americans have filed for unemployment insurance, but continuing claims declined for the first time since February. Still, 14.5 percent of the workforce received unemployment insurance for the week of May 16. • With Americans staying closer to home and many busi- nesses closed, the savings rate soared to 33%, an all- time high. Indeed, personal spending plummeted by a record 13.6 percent in April. Durable and nondurable goods consumption declined by 17.3 percent and 16.2 percent, respectively. • At the same time, personal income soared 10.5 percent in April, spurred by a $3 trillion increase in government CONTINUED ON PAGE 30
