Hearthstone Lounge Design Details

C onceived as the hotel’s “great” room and modeled after traditional game rooms often found in turn-of-the- 20 th -century Arts and Crafts homes, the lounge is a central gathering place located off the Great Hall. Game rooms of this time often leaned toward the masculine in design and choice of materials and the Hearthstone Lounge is no exception; however, to balance the space, it does feature a collection of art pieces that represent a series of female muses that inspired the great artists of the Arts and Crafts period. Uniquely, this lounge is constructed in redwood veneers from a single tree. The tree, a redwood hundreds of feet tall that had fallen naturally, was hand-selected by the interior designer and purchased at auction in Northern California by Walt Disney Imagineers. The carved wooden art piece over the bar depicts a woman drawing a peacock on a piece of parchment. Peacock feathers were a source of inspiration to some artists who abstracted their designs into stained glass panels. Beneath the carving is an epigram, a shorty witty saying that focuses on a single thought. This one, “Nature is the source of all artistic expression,” appeared in Elbert Hubbard’s 1911 book, A Thousand and One Epigrams .

Hearthstone Lounge Paintings

Blue Mandarin Coat

Inspired by the work of Colin Campbell Cooper (1856-1937), a prominent American painter who trained in Philadelphia and Europe before making his way west. It wasn’t until 1921 that he settled in Santa Barbara and became the dean of the Santa Barbara School for the Arts. He first became known for his Impressionistic paintings of cityscapes and skyscrapers, primarily in New York, but his interest in light and color was shaped by his time in California. Inspired by the works of Arthur Mathews (1860-1945), one of the founders of the American Arts and Crafts movement and a major presence in the San Francisco art scene. He and his wife Lucia, also a painter, developed the California Decorative Style, which combined the historical and the classical with the more modern Arts and Crafts movement. Inspired by the works of Arthur Mathews (1860-1946, see above) women represented the higher sensibilities of art and nature, and none more so than a dancer, who combined the goddess, mother, artist and personification of nature. Inspired by the work of Joseph Kleitsch (1882-1931), Kleitsch was born in Hungary and though he didn’t arrive in California until 1920, he became an avid Plein Air painter who, in the words of one critic, was a “master of gorgeous color.” He settled in Laguna Beach, which became the background for his studies, many of which combined California Impressionism with the techniques in color and lighting he had learned in Europe from Vermeer and other Dutch masters. Inspired by the work of John Hubbard Rich (1876-1954). Born in Hungary, Rich emigrated to the U.S. and settled in New York City, where he studied at the National Academy of Design and later with the renowned impressionist, William Merritt Chase. In the 1920s, he moved from Connecticut to San Diego, where he lived and painted until his death. His later works, which focused on portraiture and figurative subjects, retained the composition of the Boston School of American Impressionists while incorporating stylistic cues picked up from his time living in California.
