Not all, but many individuals pursue a career in the field of physical therapy after involvement in sports or going through physical rehabilitation themselves. For Meghan, it was her love for sports and studying the amazing capabilities of the human body that attracted her to physical therapy. Inspiration from her high school basketball coach and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others helped to intensify that interest. Growing up in a small town in northeastern Ohio, it wasn’t unusual for Meghan to bounce from sport to sport, participating in basketball, volleyball, softball, and track. Luckily for her, a basketball coach who was also a physical therapist provided Meghan with mentorship opportunities, exposure to the skills a therapist should possess, and even much- needed hamstring stretching before each and every basketball game. degree in exercise science. While at Slippery Rock, Meghan was an active member in the Exercise Science Society and in the Delta Zeta sorority. After graduating from Slippery Rock in 2013, Meghan moved to Pittsburgh to work as a rehabilitation aide to increase her exposure to the physical therapy field. Inspired by the therapists that she worked with each and every day and the support of family and friends, Meghan made the decision to return to academia to fulfill her dream. Meghan was accepted into the doctorate of physical therapy program at Chatham University in 2015. Meghan attended Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania to pursue a Bachelor of Science After the opportunity to complete a clinical experience at Hess Physical Therapy and the realization that her vision as a clinician aligned with Hess PT’s standards of care, Meghan interviewed for and accepted the position of therapist at the Crafton location. progress are what draw Meghan to the outpatient physical therapy setting. She truly enjoys the one- on-one patient-centered approach that allows her to create relationships with her patients and track their improvement throughout their rehabilitation process. Meghan enjoys treating orthopedic conditions, such as low back pain, that allow her to use manual therapy skills to help improve function and ultimately the quality of life of her patients. Meghan enjoys spending her free time outside, whether that be hiking, riding her bike, or paddling her kayak down the Allegheny River. She often spends weekends with her family at their campsite and dock in Ashtabula, Ohio, sitting around the campfire and cherishing time spent with her loved ones. She is also an active participant in recreational sports through the Pittsburgh Sports League, playing flag football, sand volleyball, softball, kickball, and basketball with close friends. – George Hess

THE 3 BESTWAYS TO PLAY HOOKYWITHYOUR CHILD

THE ZOO

When Gary Chapman’s book “The Five Love Languages” came out, many people focused on building better relationships with their spouses. But just as words of affirmation, acts of service, touch, gifts, and quality time can

The zoo is a great place to educate your child outside of school. They can play hookey and still learn something. Many exhibits will provide information about the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts. At the very least, your child might encounter an animal they’ve never heard of before.

help your marriage, these concepts can also help your relationship with your children. One way to show our children how much we love them is to spend quality time with them. And what better way to do that than to break them out of school to play some hooky?

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT CENTER

While classics like Skee-Ball and Pop-A-Shot may be harder to find, there are still plenty of exciting activities for you and your child to participate in. Hit up the arcade, peel out in the go-karts, or test out your putt-putt game over 18 holes. There’s an activity for all ages at these fun zones, so you and your child will always have something to choose from. Families often get so wrapped up in the activities of daily life and the chaos that accompanies it that fun is forgotten. What if kids were able to detach from the expectations of accomplishment placed on them in school and extracurricular activities and just focus on having a blast one day with Mom and Dad? Who knows — maybe by playing some hooky with your child, you’ll find the kid in you!

BASEBALL

Sharing your love of sports can be a fun way to bond with your child. While day games might not be as common as they

used to be, most teams will have at least a few of them each month. These tickets are usually cheaper and often come with promotions to help draw in fans. While most everyone else will be at work or school, you and your child will have free rein of the ballpark. Just be sure to root for the home team!

“I began having pain in my shoulder a few months before calling Hess Physical Therapy. I, like many people, hoped the pain would go away on its own. It was difficult to drive, do

level was an eight out of 10 (at rest). After my second appointment, my pain was two out of 10. We began very gentle strengthening exercises because I couldn’t tolerate much. I worked up to more challenging weight- bearing therapy, and it was great! “Jessica is a fabulous, extremely knowledgeable physical therapist. She is very compassionate and considerate with her patients. I have recommended Hess PT to friends, family, and even people I’ve met at the store. My shoulder is feeling so much better and much stronger than before. Driving, doing chores, and even sleeping is so much better after completing the plan of care that was made for my personal needs. Thank you to Jessica and the entire staff at Hess Physical Therapy. I am truly grateful!”

“Before coming to Hess Physical Therapy, my back and hip pain was so bad that I was unable to walk or lift my kids. Dr. Jessica found the source of my pain, and I was feeling better after a few short weeks. Dr. Jessica was so outgoing and fun. She made exercising, which I normally dislike doing, enjoyable!”

simple chores, or even sleep. I ignored it for too long, and almost overnight, the pain went from uncomfortable to unbearable. I made an appointment with my doctor and asked if he would write me a prescription for physical therapy. I called Hess PT before I even left the doctor’s office parking lot! “The reception staff was helpful and courteous. I had an appointment with Jessica the following day. When I came in, my pain

GET THE MOST OUT OF SURGERY

PASTA WITH TURKEY AND BROCCOLI

(Recipe inspired by realsimple.com)

INGREDIENTS • 3/4 pounds pasta (shells or orecchiette) • 2 cups broccoli florets • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 1 pound ground turkey

WITH ‘PREHABILITATION’

• 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper • Salt • Parmesan cheese

While most physical therapists will not recommend surgery unless there is clearly no other avenue for a patient’s recovery, there are certainly a wide array of circumstances that warrant going under the knife. Following surgery, most patients should undergo a bout of rehabilitative physical therapy to steer the postoperative recovery process in a positive direction. However, recent research indicates that although rehabilitation is definitely important, it may not actually be enough to get the most out of a treatment. In addition to postoperative rehabilitation programs, many modern health care providers have begun recommending 4–8 weeks of exercise-based physical therapy before undergoing surgery. This pre-emptive therapy is sometimes called prehabilitation , and it can offer a host of benefits for surgical patients. These advantages include faster recovery times, fewer days spent in the hospital, lower incidence rates of surgical complications, less pain, higher activity levels, and general improved fitness following surgery. All these benefits converge to bring about a happier, healthier patient who is more likely to return to doing what they love without worry. Though the research on prehabilitation is steadily expanding, displaying benefits for all kinds of conditions, the current data shows that prehabilitation works best for the following procedures:

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cook the pasta according to package directions. Add broccoli when pasta is 1 minute from done. Drain both and return to pot. 2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the turkey, garlic, crushed red pepper, and a pinch of salt. Cook while breaking up meat with a wooden spoon for 3–5 minutes. 3. Combine turkey with pasta and broccoli mixture, adding the remaining olive oil as you stir. Serve in bowls topped with Parmesan cheese.

“When I came to Hess PT, my major complaints were tightness in my thighs (I had both hip joints replaced in 2011 and 2012) and poor balance, which made me uncertain when I walked. I would often be afraid of falling. I received eight weeks of therapy (16 sessions) consisting of stretching and balance exercises. I now have no

In essence, prehabilitative patients are training for their surgery the same way a runner might train for a marathon. Considering the stress most surgeries put on the body, it only makes sense to adequately prepare. However, it’s important that any prehabilitative measures are carefully guided by a professional. The exercises must be rigorous enough to strengthen and prepare the patient in the short window before surgery, but it’s vital they don’t further injure or worsen the patient’s condition. If a therapist is able to maintain this delicate balance, they can motivate and guide their patient toward positive outcomes for years to come.

SWISS SPAGHETTI GROWERS ENJOY RECORD HARVEST

April Fools’ Day isn’t what it used to be. Sure, it’s still a fun distraction, with Google announcing “scratch and sniff” digital technology and Amazon declaring new features enabling Alexa to understand your pets. But it’s pretty hard for anyone to genuinely pull your leg in the internet age. Back when you couldn’t debunk a hoax with a simple Snopes search, things were a little more interesting. Here are a few of the most hilarious — yet somehow convincing — April Fools’ pranks in history. When NPR’s popular “Talk of the Nation” program announced in 1992 that former President Richard Nixon had announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, listeners were shocked. Never mind that he’d been the center of the largest presidential scam in history, but his campaign slogan, “I never did anything wrong, and I won’t do it again,” left something to be desired. NPR even brought political experts on the show to discuss the ramifications of such a move, and listeners flooded the station with outraged calls — until host John Hockenberry revealed that the on-air Nixon was actually comedian Rich Little. NIXON FOR PRESIDENT, 1992

Ah, to be as naive as we were during the early days of television. In 1957, a BBC news show called “Panorama” conducted a special report on a massive spaghetti harvest in Ticino, Switzerland, following a remarkably mild winter. The black and white images showed farmers pulling huge strands of noodles off tall trees and prompted hundreds of viewers to call into the station and ask how they might procure their own spaghetti tree.

THOMAS EDISON’S AMAZING FOOD MACHINE

When Edison was in his prime, Americans truly believed he could accomplish anything — even a machine that transformed air, water, and dirt into biscuits, vegetables, meat, and wine, as reported by the New York Daily Graphic in 1878. The article was reprinted in newspapers across the country. Thousands of people bought the trick. When Buffalo’s Commercial Advertiser ran an editorial on Edison’s genius in the endeavor, the Graphic reprinted it in full, along with the headline, “They Bite!”
