Diverse partners including community organizers, local, regional and state government leaders, transportation institutions, and affordable housing agencies eTOD, Affordable housing, Climate change, Strategic Transportation Choices, Transportation Safety According to one estimate, the unprecedented growth in the San Francisco Bay Area has created some 450,000 new jobs—but only 54,000 units of housing—between 2010 and 2014.4 As housing costs skyrocket, low-income residents of color are being pushed out of the region’s urban core in dramatic numbers. Recognizing a looming crisis, voters approved some $12.5 billion in bonds for transportation, housing, and infrastructure. As this is occurring, new public policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance racial equity are also being implemented. Launching Three Initiatives: a. More Homes and, Less Driving through 1. winning new funding for affordable homes near transit by demonstrating their transportation and climate benefits, 2. expanding partnership with GreenTrip to empower communities to champion innovations that make homes more plentiful and affordable, and make it easy for residents to drive less, 3. work with public agencies to design strategies to replace parking with affordable housing b. Disrupting Inequity through 1. directing people in low-income communities to shape new mobility options to fit their needs and increase access to opportunity, 2. Work with agencies and decision- makers to craft policy and regulations that focus on equity and climate, without stifling innovation, 3. Partner with community organizations and new mobility companies to develop and demonstrate solutions that put new mobility, including autonomous vehicles, to work for underrepresented communities, as well as for the climate. c. Transportation That Works through 1. leading coalitions to shape upcoming transportation funding ballot measures to prioritize transit, safe streets, and equity initiatives — including a regional discount transit fare, 2. initiating a Mobility Action Plan for Highway 101 to demonstrate how we can move 8,000 people per hour in a single lane, and use that as the basis for a 2020 Bay Area effort to optimize the use of existing highways, 3. with statewide partners, pushing state leaders and agencies to define and designate transportation disadvantaged communities and prioritize equity and climate protection in transportation investments and policies. 4. expanding our award-winning Safe Routes to Schools approach to engage youth and families in other areas of opportunity, such as affordable housing developments. a. Deep Community Engagement at the local level to create equitable, sustainable communities with demonstration projects and model policies in the Bay Area. b. Supporting integrated Regional Planning in the Bay Area and via partnerships through California to shape equitable housing and transportation solutions. c. Building inclusive networks to impact state policy and make Cali a national leader on transportation and land use policies that protect our climate and advance social equity. Common Measurable Goals: a. Climate Change - Reduction in transportation pollution to help clean the air and meet California’s ambitious climate goals b. Affordability - Decrease in the combined cost of housing and transportation c. Transportation Choices and Safety- Higher rates and safety of walking and bicycling d.
