But he remains hopeful that a couple of his fellow rural mayors will join him with milking bucket in hand at the fair. He would also like to see someone from City Hall in Ottawa show up and try to take away his milking champion title. “I’d love to take on Jim Watson on that one,” St-Pierre said, smiling, during an inter- view after counties council finished for the day. “I was brought up, born and raised, on a farm,” he said, noting he spent 10 years as a boy learning from his parents how to get the most milk from a cow. “But it’s not the years,” he said, grinning. “It’s the number of cows you’ve milked.” He offered two pieces of advice to any
would-be challengers. “Bring your hard hat and a pair of sun- glasses. And find a local farmer and prac- tice.”

Mayor Jean-Paul St-Pierre took advan- tage of the closing minutes of the Aug. 28 session of the United Counties of Prescott- Russell council to throw down an imaginary pair of milking gloves on the table.
