that are not weighted equally across the categories described above, and have unique areas of focus and strength. Therefore, decisions are made on an individual basis. These criteria are followed by guidance regarding metrics that demonstrate how criteria may be measured. These metrics are not all-inclusive, but are meant to provide examples and guidance for faculty and Division Directors. All metrics do not need to be met to demonstrate achievement of a given criterion. Initial appointment. With rare exceptions, faculty members who are appointed have a doctoral degree, and faculty in tenure tracks often have post-doctoral training. Initial appointment may occur at any rank; however, Instructors typically are appointed only in non-tenure tracks. Appointment as an Instructor is reserved for those individuals who have recently completed a clinical specialty training or post-doctoral training, and are beginning their professional careers. The appointment should provide time to develop research, teaching and clinical skills. Timing of promotion . In general, appointments as Instructor are for a limited period of time and promotion to Assistant Professor should be discussed each year at the time of the faculty evaluation. Instructors are appointed for a minimum of one year and typically not more than two years. Generally, for promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor, service as an Assistant Professor at Cincinnati Children’s or an equivalent institution for a total of at least five years is required to allow for assessment of productivity as indicated by achievement of criteria for promotion. Appointment or promotion with less than five years in rank as Assistant Professor will be considered only in cases of exceptional achievement. Similarly, for promotion from Associate Professor to Professor, service as an Associate Professor at Cincinnati Children’s or an equivalent institution for a total of at least five years is required. Appointment or promotion with less than five years in rank as Associate Professor will be considered only in cases of exceptional achievement. The rank of Professor is reserved for distinguished members of the faculty in recognition of distinctive local, regional, and national achievement and leadership. Transfer to the tenure track . Qualified individuals in a non-tenure track may apply for transfer to an appropriate tenure track. One such switch from the non-tenure to the tenure track is permitted, with approval by the Department Chair and the Dean of the College of Medicine. Faculty in all tracks may be appointed at less than full-time, as long as their full professional effort is devoted to the Department of Pediatrics. Faculty who choose to be less than full-time in the non-tenure track either at the time of their initial appointment or later in their career will be appointed or stay in their faculty track. Tenure track probationary period . Beginning with appointment or transfer into the Tenure Track, a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics has a maximum 10-year probationary period (“tenure clock”). The faculty member must apply for Tenure by the ninth year of appointment in the Tenure Track. A faculty member who has been denied tenure and whose probationary period has expired will not be entitled to further tenure review, but will be considered for transition to a non-tenure track. Promotion to Associate Professor can occur before the awarding of tenure. Tenure Track faculty may request a change in their tenure track emphasis (e.g., Research Tenure Track to Education Tenure Track). Such a request must be approved by the Department Chair and the Dean of the College of Medicine. If such a change is granted, it will have no effect on their tenure probationary period (e.g., it will not reset the tenure clock). For faculty in a tenure track who choose to be less than full-time: 1) the tenure clock will be extended for one year if the faculty member is less than full-time status for less than two years; 2) the tenure clock will be extended for two years if faculty member is less than full-time status for two years or more; 3) the tenure clock will only be extended once; and 4) 0.8 FTE is the lower limit allowed in a tenure track.
