Description

Faculty members in the volunteer track generally are engaged in the private practice of medicine, psychology, or dentistry, or are employed as research scientists outside the University of Cincinnati. They donate their services in areas of teaching, research, and clinical care. No salary is received from the University or Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. All volunteer appointments within the Department of Pediatrics will be reviewed whenever a new Department Chair is named. The new Department Chair at his/her discretion may terminate such appointments at their ending dates. All volunteer appointments will be reviewed for reappointment in accordance with the College of Medicine time tables based on the criteria outlined below. For each faculty member in the Volunteer Track it is essential that the faculty member and his or her Division Director prepare a detailed job description, criteria, and metrics for promotion in order to provide the guidelines for evaluation of performance by the departmental and college Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure committees. Criteria may be reviewed by the Department Chair. Initial appointment and subsequent reappointment or promotion requires involvement in teaching, research or patient care activities of the Department of Pediatrics which may include, but is not limited to the following areas: 1. Participation in the pediatric teaching program a. Office based teaching for pediatric residents or medical students (greater than 50 hours per year); and/or b. Preceptor in the Pediatric Residency Program Continuity Clinic; and/or c. Attending physician for a minimum of two weeks per year on the inpatient units at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center 2. Participation in career guidance seminars for the pediatric house staff and/or functioning as a faculty advisor 3. Participation in the planning and/or execution of Continuing Medical Education programs 4. Participation in office based research 5. Participation in conferences and Grand Rounds

General guidelines for appointment, reappointment and promotion by rank as follows:

Instructor : Individuals appointed as Instructor contribute at a minimal level of expectation to Departmental responsibilities in one or more of the above activities. In general, individuals will have recently completed training and/or post-graduate work. The candidate's knowledge and expertise must be documented in recommendation letters.
