“ T he First Tuesday of November”, goes the song delivered by country-and-western star Slim Dusty in 1975. “Every year it is the same, Every Aussie heart is beating with excitement of the game.” Think Big won the Cup, for the second year in a row. “First Tuesday in November” was the title of a sumptuous coffee- table book by veteran journalist David Bernstein, published in 1969, with the subtitle “The Story of the Melbourne Cup”. That was the year of Rain Lover’s second victory. This year, 2026, marks the 166th successive running of Australia’s most historic and famous race, at Flemington every spring. THE FIRST TUESDAY?
