Welcome to the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival, our most exceptional yet. As Lexus celebrates its ninth year as Principal Partner of the Victoria Racing Club, we are proud to bring innovation, heritage and human connection together, creating an experience like no other. EXCEPTIONAL AWAITS

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

Lexus Melbourne Cup Day is the most highly anticipated race day in Australia and increasingly followed around the world. Nothing beats being here in person at fabulous Flemington, while millions are joining the celebration digitally through a myriad of digital platforms being accessed globally. Every edition of the Melbourne Cup since its first running in 1861 has added a colourful chapter to the story of our most famous race, and of our nation.

Always attracting the finest stayers from Australia and the New Zealand, for nearly half a century past it has also attracted the best overseas gallopers, with several of the coveted three-handled trophies heading to Britain, the UAE, France, Ireland, Qatar, Germany and Japan. With guaranteed entry to the Cup for the winners of great overseas races, the global appeal of our contest speaks for itself. Top international trainers and riders make Melbourne their destination. Still the local contingent remains fiercely competitive, as the recent Lexus Melbourne Cup wins of Australian-bred Half Yours and Knight’s Choice have proven. The 18 carat gold Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy, valued this year at $1 million alone, returns to the Mounting Yard today after taking its Melbourne Cup magic to international and Australian destinations far and wide. The Victoria Racing Club is proud to share the people’s cup so widely before it goes to its proud new owners. The VRC team works tirelessly to present famous Flemington at its absolute best. In welcoming you here today, I encourage you to explore everything we have on offer. Get close to your horse heroes at the Mounting Yard. Enjoy food, fun, Fashions on the Field and international superstar Robbie Williams who will entertain us ahead of the big race and, in the Elms at the end of what will be another memorable Lexus Melbourne Cup Day.

MELBOURNE CUP THE FIRST TUESDAY IN NOVEMBER

Wollomai won 1875 Melbourne Cup on the second Tuesday in November. (The Australasian Sketcher/VRC Collection)

“ T he First Tuesday of November”, goes the song delivered by country-and-western star Slim Dusty in 1975. “Every year it is the same, Every Aussie heart is beating with excitement of the game.” Think Big won the Cup, for the second year in a row. “First Tuesday in November” was the title of a sumptuous coffee- table book by veteran journalist David Bernstein, published in 1969, with the subtitle “The Story of the Melbourne Cup”. That was the year of Rain Lover’s second victory. This year, 2026, marks the 166th successive running of Australia’s most historic and famous race, at Flemington every spring. THE FIRST TUESDAY? ALWAYS By Dr Andrew Lemon Almost

MELBOURNE CUP THE FIRST TUESDAY IN NOVEMBER

Always the First Tuesday? Well, nearly always. It is like a children’s riddle. “When is a first Tuesday not a first Tuesday?” The correct answer is 1875, the year when Wollomai won the Cup, because that was the first time the Cup was run on a Tuesday, with Victoria Derby Day the preceding Saturday, Oaks Day on the following Thursday and a final day of racing the next Saturday. But when Wollomai won, Cup Day was the second Tuesday in November, which that year

was the 9th, a public holiday proclaimed in Victoria to celebrate the birthday of the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII. When Archer won the very first Melbourne Cup, a handicap, back in 1861, the race opened three consecutive days of racing, commencing on 7 November, a Thursday—the first Thursday of November. The next day, Friday, the Sydney champion returned to win the Town Plate, again of two miles but at weight-for-age, in commanding style. A year later he won the Cup again, this time on the second Thursday in November. Two days later he took home the All-Aged Stakes of one mile, “in a canter”. Cup Day in 1863 came late in November, on Friday the 20th. The winner, Banker, returned the next day to win a 1½ mile race called The Metropolitan Handicap. From 1864 onwards for the next decade the Cup was always run on a Thursday. That year’s winner, Lantern, has the unique distinction of winning the Victoria Derby a day after taking the Melbourne Cup. The next day, Saturday, he returned to win the one mile Publicans’ Purse handicap. When ‘Sydney’ Tim Whiffler won the Cup in 1867 the race was actually held on the last Thursday of October, the 31st. It was again the start of a three day meeting, and he reappeared on the Saturday to win the valuable Queen’s Plate over a punishing

three miles. It was the next year when Glencoe recorded a gruelling five wins in three days. After taking the Cup on the opening Thursday, he won the Spring Handicap and a handicap for four-year-olds on Friday, and won twice again the next day. First of those two was the All-Aged Stakes over a mile, attracting a field of five. At the end of the day he won the three- mile Queen’s Plate, admittedly in “a very slow time”. When Warrior, a six-year-old, won the 1869 Melbourne Cup on the first Thursday in November, the Victoria Derby had been switched to the preceding Saturday for the first time. Warrior won the two mile Essendon Stakes on Derby Day ahead of his Thursday victory in the Cup. He raced again the next day, Friday, in the Spring Handicap, beaten this time by the Cup runner-up, The Monk. Cup Day 1870 was postponed for a week because of rain— from the first Thursday to the second. So Thursday it remained until Wollomai’s year. The four- day formula with the Cup on a Tuesday—albeit the second Tuesday—was judged such a success that the VRC decided to replicate this schedule the following year. Cup Day became the holiday. By the workings of the calendar, this meant that

the Geelong super filly, Briseis, became the first horse to win a Melbourne Cup on the First Tuesday in November. She had already won the Derby against colts the previous Saturday, and she went on to win the Oaks on Thursday. No other horse in history has won this trio. First Tuesday in November it has been ever since, with just these five exceptions: 1882 The Assyrian When the Cup was run on Tuesday 31 October. 1916 Sasanof Torrential rain forced a postponement to the following Saturday. 1942 Colonus 1943 Dark Felt 1944 Sirius The war years when Melbourne Cup Day holiday was suspended and the race was run on the second or third Saturday of the month. First horse to win a Melbourne Cup on a Tuesday in November: 1875 Wollomai First horse to win a Melbourne Cup on the First Tuesday in November: Briseis, 1876, the three-year-old filly whose jockey that day, Peter ‘St Albans’ Bowden, was just shy of his twelfth birthday. But that is another story.

Vet cert req. 24/10/2026 FLEM When questioned rider explained the race was run at a strong tempo and he felt he was in a favourable position following the race favourite. He added with his mount stepping up in distance to 1200m for the first time and with the race tempo building, he was comfortable maintaining a trailing position. B Shinn added he was reluctant to expose his mount too soon to ensure The Speed Machine had every opportunity through to the line and for these reasons did not present the gelding until passing the 200m where in his view it had every opportunity to win 25/04/2026 MORP raced fiercely in early & middle stages of the event.
