Today we dare not forget that we are the heirs of that first revolution; let the word go forth that the torch has been passed to a new generation of women. Let all who hear us speak know we will bear any burden to support our Hola Sober sisters on this journey. To all sisters on high, know we are here fighting a new fight as a new set of revolutionaries who will oppose all who stand in our path, to assure the survival and the success of our sobriety, at our very core this much we pledge.

Jamie also has our 'thing' and I always enjoy reading about her sobriety and openness about 'our thing.' "Do you ask hotels to remove your minibar before you check in? Oh yes, I am a very careful sober person. When I work, if there are no recovery meetings available, I make them. “Don’t wait for things to get easier, simpler, better. Resilience build-up in sobriety? For me, resilience is like a muscle, it grows stronger with exercise. I'm more resilient than I was. SUNDAY

SUNDAY

For me one of the ever-ending- gifts-of-sobriety is the simple realisations that hit me as I do the mundane and ordinary, like washing my face at midnight and making tea in a proper china cup like my mother like - mad isn't it? Not really. It's truthful. I am not alone in not taking care of my skin when a bottle in. I am not alone in putting bottles on a marble counter in a particular way. The good news is that we are here together and we know these things about ourselves and May your Monday be a day of ordinary extraordinary moments where you can embrace the gift that is YOU RIGHT NOW and simplicity of washing your face and put down a cup bringing pure joy and a smile…

It's a lovely Monday morning in Madrid. Not too early. Not too late. And I'm celebrating washing my face last night that has ensured that I didn't wake up with a face that would frighten small children. There are more nights in my life that I did not cleanse or tone my face having wine on board than there are not. It's amazing what can make you smile early morning and for me it is the ‘ordinary’ which starts with authenticity and is anything but ‘ordinary.’ Sobriety is a million moments of extraordinary strung together across twenty-four-hours. A simple example of what that means to me is this morning when I put my ‘good’ china cup down on our kitchen counter which is marble. I AM THAT WOMAN who cherished the sound of bone china kissing the early morning breakfast kitchen. It was a gentle sound, nothing jarred the early morning moment and more importantly, I didn't have to PLACE it in any particular way, or at an odd angle hoping it wouldn't be heard. The sober gold is that me and and my china tea cup don't care who hears the kiss on Spanish marble. Early mornings wins being notched up are a clean face and a bone china cup kissing the counter top this morning.

For so long I laid wine bottles so very gently on this blinking counter top afraid of making noise thus alerting my husband and sons to the heralding sound of Mom exiting the building in her head. I am almost ashamed to admit the amount of times I walked in laden down with shopping bags in which the wine was casually hidden, nervously laying them on the tiled floor hoping against all hope that they would not make that clanking bottle sound. Tiled floors and marble kitchen counters became my enemy as me and wine o clock-addiction tried to con all those around me as to the buying of wine, the opening of wine, the drinking of vat-loads of wine. Whispering wine bottles on marble counter tops may seem like nothing but to me in the height of my wine o clock addiction. That clank of bottles hitting the counter still puts the fear of God into me as it chillingly reminds me of how low I went. I ACTUALLY spent time thinking about how to lay bags of shopping filled with wine on the floor without making noise, or how to place a bottle on a counter top without it making a single solitary sound.

Please join me as I look skyward and say not today lady, not today.

Lots of love,

Susan C. xxx

Hola Sober

NOVEMBER 2022 VILLAGE VOICES

I feel much happier in sobriety. Being happier allows me to look at any adversity more clearly and not allow it to drag me down, pull me into “poor me” , create unnecessary drama, or become part of someone else’s drama. I have a clearer (not foggy, hungover) vision of where and what I want to do. When I do encounter sadness or unexpected life events, I am able to sit in the sadness or anger and feel it without trying to ignore it, cover it up, pretend it isn’t there, or drink at it. In early sobriety, I found the serenity prayer from AA to be meditative, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference." I would say this anytime I felt stress or overwhelmed and it reminded me to stop and look at the situation and what I should or could do about it. Yes, building up resilience for me is a life long learning experience!

Not today lady, not today

Be patient when becoming someone you haven't been before. Tanya Markul

HOLA SOBER | MADRID

Spirituality for me is the moments when I feel connected and at peace. In the morning, before I get out of bed, I say the mantra of ‘Not today lady. Not today.’ Immediately I feel connected to something bigger than me and I tap into that energy. I light a candle and look at the photos of the ones that are dear to me and I feel safe. Throughout the day I often look up or cast my sight somewhere above the horizon and feel the fullness of the Universe whispering to me that I am where I need to be and I trust the whisper. These moments of connection, the feeling of being safe, of trusting the process are gifts and labour of sobriety.

Jo. C. Pledge 100 Tara

I know that my calmness and well-being are obviuosly directly linked to not drinking anymore; but I do also feel this wondeful thing inside of me which I think is the spiritual side of me opening up and gaining in strength. My heart/soul feels warm and hopeful and excited and feelings of pride and strength are definitly increasing and again I put this down to opening up and embracing the universe. I think finding Hola Sober and my tribe has helped my spiritual side to grow and embrace the wonderful things which are happening to me. Feeling very grateful this morning and very much at peace which is a sign to me that my spiritual side continues to strengthen.

S.C. Pledge 100 Tara

HOLA SOBER | MADRID

No I am not. I hate to say this but I need to be truthful with myself and you. I feel terrible that Susan has given so much time, and put so much effort into this programme and I am so lucky to be part of it... And everyone else is so helpful and encouraging but I keep thinking? Was I really that bad? AND the answer is yes......Just because I didn't get absolutely parallactic and never sent texts or posted on facebook or the usual shite. I did ultimately piss myself off! I hate being drunk, to be honest I don't even like the taste of most white wine/beer I hate spirits and red wine.

So why do I still fear I am missing out?

There is just something I am missing and I don't know what it is. I have been on this journey now for far to long and I just need to find that missing piece. I love being sober. I love going and getting my kids late at night. I love the clear head, the clear skin - even eating the puddings or icecream that I wouldn't normally and I love the variety of drinks I can now have SO WHY DO I THINK God I could do with a drink?! I will do the hundred days I have before but I have never done 200 maybe I should think like that. Actually, I think I need to work more on my sobriety somehow! -C. Pledge 100 Tara- It’s hard when that part inside your head keeps whispering that ‘you weren’t that bad’ . When that voice comes calling add ‘yet’ to all the dark places it hasn’t taken you. I know from my own experience that I moved the goal posts many times regarding things I had never done and never would do.

We need to surrender completely.

I liken it to getting into a boxing ring with someone much bigger and more powerful than me…it will ALWAYS get the better of me. But when I ‘surrendered’ and threw in the towel and walked away saying fine, you’ve beaten me, you always will so I’m out and you can never hurt me again, as long as I stay out of the ring I’m going to be ok. If you haven’t done your list of ‘why’ then do one and keep it on hand and read it daily. You’re not alone in this thinking, and you are hugely brave to speak your truth so be proud of yourself. A lot of the ladies have done just that, when they got to 100 they committed to another hundred. Come to meetings and listen…that’s where I gained so much, and reach out anytime. We’re here for you x

Online Class Wisdom

My sobriety is no test drive. It is mine! I have test-driven and “leased” various models of recovery, only to be lured in by the lies of “Slick, the kingpin slime-ball." And then again, I am back at the negotiating table to receive this once-in-a-lifetime deal. Slick is the kind of thief that wakes up 10 minutes before I did, and was prepared with a sales pitch each day until I had no protection against the bait and switch. I own my sobriety. It does not ever get parked. It is detailed and shined every day. I have Hola Sober to provide routine maintenance and the service advisor, the best in the business. The second that I drove MY sobriety off the proverbial lot, I knew that it would last me a lifetime and the guarantee was to be trusted. -R.W. Pledge 100 Tara

In the past I have sat in the middle with a foot in either camp, it's been like that for a few years. This time around I do feel I'm owning my sobriety, I've heard myself saying no thanks I don't drink to new people that come into my life and I smile to myself. I have just come back from a trek, it was a group of women who have trekked together many times. They drank I didn't, I watched them change before my eyes and I watched them struggle with the hangovers on the mountains the next day, there was nothing but gratitude for my sobriety on that trip. -B. Pledge 100 Tara Yes, I own my sobriety. Being on vacation proved to me how important it is to protect and defend. I stayed with a drinker and remained dedicated to my sober life. I even felt empowered by not drinking and waking fresh in the morning. It was good to change my environment for a different perspective. I love this path of sober living. -M.K. Pledge 100 Tara Sustained sobriety is the single most important thing in my life. I am choosing it every morning, I am doing the work to protect it and I am enjoying the fruit of this commitment. I own my sobriety and I cherish and guard it like the precious gem it truly is.

-J.C. Pledge 100 Tara

HOLA SOBER | MADRID

It then became the journey of a woman waking up to the world and all its possibilities and wonder, her own power and voice and unique identity, the bigness that life can be when we centre it on our true desires, compared to the smallness of the one we accept when we centre it on the desires we’re supposed to have. That personal awakening was followed by the part where I discovered that alcohol was not only something I could not abide, but perhaps something we all shouldn’t, and that was paralleled by the part where I discovered that the systems in place to help me stop drinking the chemical we’ve been trained to tolerate—the chemical that was physically and emotionally and mentally murdering me—were archaic, patriarchal, masculine, and hence ineffective for me as a non-man. I discovered that I not only had to claw my way out of hell and construct my own system for recovery, but that also, perhaps, it was my duty to create something more so the women who come after me, women who are dying in broad daylight while we look the other way, might not have to face the same bullshit I had to endure.

DAILY Thought + Truth "What I have learned? Alcohol is my thing. A big nasty beast of a thing. I am an addict and always will be. I cannot control it if I let it in ( that was huge for me and I must never forget it) That booze makes every aspect of life harder than it needs to be ( no matter who you are - addicted or not) because it is an addictive substance - no one escapes - not really. The issue isn’t about whether it kills you or gives you a serious illness when you’re old (or before) - it’s about the quality of each day that it takes in small ways that really matter. It’s about the substandard years spent on the journey that you never get back."

- B.N. Pledge 100 Tara

HOLA SOBER | MADRID

DAILY Thought + Truth I love being sober. I was in a pub last night for a family meal and I was the only one with no alcohol. I noticed how the alcohol certainly didn’t enhance anybody or make them better in some way. I am glad I made the decision to stop and I have no regrets. I accept that I had good times and bad times in the past while drinking but those days are over and I accept the fact that I was addicted to an addictive substance and that I had a lucky escape that so many people do not have . I just know now that I do not need or want alcohol anymore. I am hungry to learn about living a new purposeful life and letting go of the trappings of addiction. -Sarah Pledge 100 Tara-

card of the week

Two Of Cups is our card this week. The two individuals in this card each have something to offer the other. They are on equal footing. Although the Two Of Cups usually indicate the beginning of a romance, it can also promise a new partnership that is based on mutual respect and trust. This week we look around with gratitude at the people in our orbit. As the fog lifts when we put down the wine glass we are better able to see relationships with family and friends for what they are. (A Thanksgiving dinner skit from SNL last night comes to mind!) while we don’t have to sever any relationships we may be getting a better perspective on some. We may also be starting to understand the value and depth of new friendships being forged in the honesty and safety of our Hola Sober space or any space where we are free to leave our bullshit at the door and be welcomed for who we truly are.

Hola Sober Sunday Pick

My friends Seamus and Ed are behind this non-profit DANIELS BRIDGE raising funds for education for Daniel who lost his brother to addiction. ln December of his senior year in high school in Burbank, CA, Daniel lost his older brother and only sibling, Frank, to a drug overdose. It was a world shattering event for him and his mom, Jennifer who is a single parent (and for Daniel’s father, who is still in his life). After Frank’s death a small group of us who are clean & sober were looking for a way to help and be of service. Every penny of these funds goes directly to Daniel’s tuition and college expenses…books, food while on campus, etc. Those of us raising the funds hold the account and write the checks from it as needed. We feel honored, humbled and profoundly grateful to those who contribute. We know these are extremely difficult times.

Please visit my website and reach out so we can work on your next self-care silver treat together!

To all ladies who give permission to publish your words. Thank you, Lisa Wilde for all your support, words, and help - thank you.

Note: I am not a professional designer, writer, or creator; I am a woman who drank wine and now talks about not drinking creating this platform and magazine in a moment of pure madness offering EVERYTHING for FREE.

If there are spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, cut me some slack as this is a FREE MAGAZINE made with love.

The HOLA SOBER PLATFORM (Magazine, Meetings, Emails) would not be possible without the financial and loving support of my husband, and three sons who support this project 100% . Shout out, as always, to Deb + Judith, Gee + Colette ❤️
