MUSIC

Spring chamber music concert

Luca Franchi (Year 11) and Richard Mayo

O n 27 April, 35 of the College’s musicians and three members of the music staff came together to give a chamber music concert at St James’s Church, Piccadilly. This concert, the first of its kind since 1993, represented the culmination of the Music Department’s Chamber Music programme for the academic year, which has provided weekly rehearsal opportunities for the College’s Music Award holders to study and perform music in small ensembles. The Chamber Music programme is led and run by Mr Parés, Head of Keyboard, and Miss Larkum, Head of Strings, with further coaching given by Mr Eno, Deputy Director of Music (Practical) and Mrs Kelly, Head of Music for Years 3 to 8. The programme included exciting repertoire from various compositional periods, including a Trio Sonata by Arne, piano duets by Fauré, Brahms and Moszkowski, arrangements for woodwind and mixed ensemble by Albéniz and Piazzolla, and movements from Dvorak’s American String Quartet,

Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, Arnold’s Three Shanties, and Beethoven’s Piano Trio opus 11, concluding with the first movement of Schumann’s magnificent Piano Quintet. The essence of Dulwich College Music was reflected in the playing of all the groups and the lively spirit of chamber music was evident throughout the concert, with some truly sophisticated moments. The occasion also provided the Year 13 musicians with one of their last opportunities to perform together. The final item of the programme showed how successfully boys of similar musical abilities, but of different ages, can work together to produce a performance of high quality. Luca Franchi (violin 1), Chyaro Hylton (violin 2), Ben Miller (viola), Lucas Miller (cello) and Devin Liu (piano) range across several year-groups, and for Chyaro, Ben and Lucas (as well as for Ashley Austin, who performed earlier in the concert) this was a fitting finale to the concert, and to their time as musicians at the College.
