W e have made strides in our development of the Cross Country programme this year. Boys have trained twice weekly with before- school, lunchtime, track and all-terrain sessions. The major events of the season are the English Schools Cross Country Cup, which takes us up to the Christmas break, with the London Schools Cross Country Championships leading into the English Schools Championships in the Lent term. The 2017-18 season has been the most successful for many years. In the English Schools Cross Country Cup, both Junior and Intermediate teams enjoyed hugely successful area and regional rounds to ensure both age-groups made the national final together for the first time ever. At the final in Sevenoaks, both ran superbly with the Intermediates running to 19th nationally. However, it was our Junior team which excelled this year, running superbly in the final to finish fifth nationally. Based on the success of our Juniors on the national stage, we were invited to enter two teams into this year’s Junior A competition. These were ably backed up by a strong Junior B, Intermediate and Senior Dulwich College teams. Our Junior A 1st team, Junior B, Intermediate and Senior teams all won their age categories, affording us our first ever London Schools Championships clean sweep! In addition, our Junior A 2nd team ran exceptionally well to finish third team in London. I am also delighted that no fewer than 11 Dulwich runners received London representative invitation letters and went on to run at this year’s English Schools Cross Country Championships in Leeds on Saturday 17 March. The closing section of our season saw our athletes switch to road racing. In the Borough Road Race Championships, we entered full teams at all age groups. All three teams ran superbly: Luke Pye, David Lubbock and James Lattanzio ran to team gold with superb performances. We were equally successful in both the U13 and U15 Boys sections with incredible depth in consistency of placings; individual results brought us home winners in both of these age-groups as well. As a result of this, no fewer than nine of our athletes were selected to run for either Greenwich or Southwark in the Virgin London Mini Marathon, which is the official British Athletics three-mile road championships for young athletes aged between 11 and 17. The three-mile course stretches from London’s Old Billingsgate to The Mall and the race is open to entrants from the nine regions of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and teams from all 33 London Boroughs. The event provides runners a fantastic chance to compete against the best new talent in British road running. All of our athletes cemented our growing reputation in Cross Country superbly.
