7. His Way—Not Ours "None of the men . . . shall see the land . . ¡ because they have'not wholly followed me” (Num. 32:11). How often God has dealt with us in respect to some lesson He requires us to learn, desiring that each of us should love Him with an undivided heart. . . but we have not been thor ough. He cannot yet write “whole hearted” across our lives, and by many ways He is bringing us .to this. . . . Yet how slow we are to learn! Shall we not let Him have His way with us? •—W. Graham Scroggie. 8. . What of Your Service? “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearirs only, deceiving your own selves” (Jas. 1:22). It is very striking to see the useless ness of many Christians. Are there none -of you who know what it is to be selfish in your .Christianity? . .. . Some Christians feed upon Christ and forgiveness; but it is, alone and for themselves. Are there not some of you who can enjoy being a Christian while your dearest friend is not, and yet will not speak to Jlim? When Christ found you, He said, "Go work today in my vineyard.” What were you hired for, if it was not to spread salvation? —Robert Murray McCheyne. 9. Love Manifest in Law “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have k e p t my Father’s command ments, and abide in his love” (John 15:9, 10). The love of Christ is expressed in all His commands as well as in His prom ises and Invitations. There is nothing that retards the progress of Christians so much as their unwillingness to ac cept this truth. Every great blessing is borne by two cherubim—a promise and a command. ;—George Bowen. 10. Our Intercessor “He maketh intercession for the saints” (Rom. 8:27). I dreamed the Saviour came to be My Guest awhile; My home was hallowed by His word, His gracious smile. At evening in the chamber there He Went alone; I listened breathlessly to hear An undertone That thrilled my very soul because It held my name! Oh, was it all an empty dream? - Nay, just the same As if within that little room I heard Him pray, He brings my need before the Father Every day. •—Opal Leonore Gibbs,
II. And It Came to Pass “And it came to pass” (Lk. 24:15). Though not the original meaning of the words, a slightly different render ing of this well-known phrase might be: “And it came . . . to pass” : This is the way to look at the day of trouble: it comes—to pass, not to stop. When we enter the dark tunnel, we can nerve ourselves on. the realiza tion that we shall soon be out pgain in the sunshine . . . Trouble is tem porary. ■War time cannot last. And the realization of this should enable the heart to face it calmly and reso lutely. ; , . “ God is faithful” ! . —A London Journalist. 12. Linked “The Lord will give grace and glory” (Fsa. 84:11). Grace is the present experience; glory is the future hope; and the two are inseparably linked, indissolubly united. Grace is both the prelude and the pledge of glory. If we are recipi ents of God’s grace now, we may be certain that one glad day we shall be partakers of His glory. What a grand assurance that i s ! . . The glory .is as certain as th e ,grace; ' and both the glory and the grace are the Father’s gifts to us. —Frank Colquhoun. 13. Bef lectors of H is Glory “ I [Jesus], If I be lifted up , . . . will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32). There are flowers which always turn their faces to the sun, and follow him in his daily journey. T h o u g h the storm may make them droop for a little, still they point to the one be loved orb. And so should the believer, Whether his sky be clear or covered with clouds. God, his God-—is. the sun in his heaven to,which his face is ever directed, and from which his beams of gladness ever descend. —Robert Murray McCheyne. 14. The Resurrection Promise “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which accord-, ing to his. abundant mercy hath begot ten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet. 1:3). . In the light of the resurrection, I can believe any one of the promises now. -I hear, for example, the thrill ing, comforting word: “Lo, I am with you* alway.” It is a mystery, but I believe the promise none the less; the promise of forgiveness, the promise of nearness, the promise ot power and vision. . . .He who'was sacrificed yet lives, to die no more, and is at the right hand of power as our great and only Priest.—Colin;C. Kerr. 15. Living Forgiveness “God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Eph. 4:32). ,
