LIFE IN FLORIDA
F or a long time, Florida has held a special place in my heart. I grew up in Illinois, and when I was young, my parents started taking winter vacations down to Florida. It became our annual family getaway. Over the years, though, my parents would spend more and more time in the Sunshine State. By the time I was in high school, my parents were spending upward of a full month in Florida every year during the December holiday season. The great part was, during my winter break from school, I got to go down and spend time with them. I would get as much beach time in as I could and hang out on the water. Florida, I quickly learned, was the perfect antidote to those cold, snowy northern winters. Fast-forward a few years, and I had big decision to make. Before I went to law school, I spent a lot of time deliberating which school I wanted to attend. I also needed to figure out where I would practice law after graduation. My original thought was to go to a law school in Illinois, or at least a little closer to home. Then, once I was out of school, I would join my dad’s practice. My dad, however, didn’t think I needed to pick a school so close to home. He encouraged me to take a look at other options around the country. So I did! During my research, I looked at a handful of schools in Florida, and one in particular caught my eye — Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. Long story short, I applied, got in, worked hard, and graduated. Spending so much time in Florida can have an impact on you. I loved the area so much that I decided not to go back to Illinois after graduating with my law degree. I stayed, got my first job out of school, and met my wife, Ashley. Eventually, we had that all- important conversation about where we wanted to settle down. The answer, of course, was Florida!

For me, a big reason I love living in Florida is the weather. Between October and May, it falls into that “perfect” category — at least, for the most part. More than that, simply being able to be outside year-round is important to me. We love to get out on weekends to go surfing (which I am terrible at), swimning, or biking. With so many great parks and beaches all over the place, there is always something to do. There is one spot that holds a special place in my heart: Juno Beach. It’s where Ashley and I had one of our first dates. We spent all day there, and we still get out there when we can. Another thing that makes living in Florida so great is the proximity to Disney World. We try to go to the park once or twice a year. Of course, there are many other attractions in Orlando that are worth a visit. I’m thankful that my parents gave me the opportunity to experience Florida in my youth. It led to a lot of other decisions in my life that ultimately brought me to where I am today!

The only way to stay on top of duties around the house is to work together. A chore chart with clear responsibilities is a great place to start. Whether you have one child or eight, everyone is capable of pitching in.

Small-Business Spotlight Lise Hudson, Hudson Family Law
Not far from the Law Offices of Matthew Konecky, you will find the office of Hudson Family Law, the law firm of Lise Hudson. Lise and Matt have known one another for about seven years, since Matt first moved his practice into the building at 4440 PGA Boulevard. Lise has been practicing law for 30 years, with a focus on family law, which includes marital law, divorce, adoption, child custody, and more. Her passion for family law stems, in part, from the fact that she has personally been through many of the issues she helps her clients with. She connects with many of them through shared experience. Her philosophy of practicing law is centered on three primary tenets: Resolve, Rebuild, Restore. It’s not uncommon for clients to feel that their lives are over. Divorce, for example, can be a very stressful situation and can turn a person’s world upside down. Lise is committed to helping her clients find hope. More than that, Lise has created a safe place for her clients where they are able to focus. When someone has questions, concerns, or simply feels lost, Lise is there to listen and help them find a new path forward.
Outside of work, Lise has a number of passions, including animal rights. She’s a huge animal-rights advocate and supports many local charities and nonprofits. One major organization she supports is Big Cat Rescue, which is headquartered in Tampa. This organization gives big cats, such as lions and tigers, a place to live after being abandoned or retired from performance acts.
Lise is also a lover of the arts, particularly ballroom dancing. She used to be involved in competitive ballroom dancing, but no longer competes. However, she tries to stay active in the community and will gladly strike up a conversation about dance with anyone who wants to chat about it.

Sesame-Ginger Roasted Broccoli
Instructions
• 2 medium heads broccoli (about 1 1/2 pounds total), or 2 10-ounce bags frozen broccoli florets • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil or a neutral cooking oil • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari • 1 1-inch-long piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped • 3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

1. Heat oven to 425 F. 2. For fresh broccoli, remove the fibrous part of the stem and discard. Then chop the remaining broccoli florets into bite-sized pieces. 3. Evenly place broccoli florets (fresh

Jury Duty Myths There are so many rumors about jury duty that it can be difficult to know which ones are true. Here are three of the most popular speculations, debunked.
Admitting Bias Will Ensure Your Dismissal
If you admit that you are biased when you serve jury duty, it does not guarantee your dismissal. In fact, a judge cannot dismiss you for being biased — but an attorney can. In addition, attempting to portray yourself as a biased person can put you in a troubling situation. Attorneys and judges have been selecting jurors for a long time and know when someone is lying to them. Your best bet will be to give honest answers to the questions they ask.
Serving Jury Duty Will Get You Fired
If you’re worried about getting fired for serving jury duty, you can breathe easy. Your employer cannot fire you once you’ve been selected for jury service. In fact, if your boss threatens to fire you for it, they will face the penalties, which include fines and even jail time. Many employers know and understand this, but if yours doesn’t, you can submit a file of complaint to the trial court administrator, and they will take care of the rest for you. The system to select jurors has been around for a while, and those involved know what they’re doing. It’s best to go in with an open mind and be completely honest. After all, it is your civic duty to do so.
No Voting, No Jury Duty
According to another circulating myth, if you aren’t registered to vote, you don’t have to serve jury duty. Many people believe this myth because voting enters you into the jury duty pool, but there are other means by which citizens are chosen. Other ways you’re entered into the pool include buying a home, paying taxes, and getting a driver’s license. Even if you aren’t registered to vote, you’re still liable to be summoned.
