LEADERSHIP MATTERS A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Valued Chamber Members, As we celebrate National Chamber of Commerce Week, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and dedication to our chamber. While this letter touches on some of our recent events and accomplishments, the rest of this magazine goes into greater detail about the tremendous impact your membership has made over this past year. We kicked off the fall season with an incredibly successful Heart of the Rogue Festival, featuring over 100 local vendors and businesses. Our Young Professionals Network (YPN) group hosted a lively networking event during the festival, bringing together dynamic young leaders over great wine and conversation. The lively atmosphere and sense of fellowship were evident throughout the event. Our Forum Luncheon also relaunched in spectacular fashion, thanks to the fresh perspective brought by our speaker, Mary Hambleton, who inspired us to forge new connections within the innovative new take on a cherished 100-year tradition. Coming up this November 9, YPN will host an event at Lithia Motors Headquarters, with breakout speakers providing valuable insights and takeaways for young professionals. We strive to make each YPN gathering an unforgettable experience that propels our emerging leaders forward. On behalf of our board and staff, thank you again for your membership and involvement. Together, we will continue working to refresh, revitalize and grow our chamber community. Wishing you a wonderful National Chamber of Commerce Week!
Sincerely,
Eli Matthews, IOM President & CEO Chamber of Medford and Jackson County

OREGON UPDATES
Pacific Northwest Selected for Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub Salem, OR | October 13, 2023 | Press Release T oday, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association’s PNWH2 Hub has been selected as one of the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs following a competitive nationwide process.
The PNWH2 Hub will span across Washington, Oregon, and Montana, and will leverage the abundant clean power and innovative technology companies in the Pacific Northwest to accelerate the transition to clean hydrogen production and use. The hub will focus on decarbonizing the region’s hard-to-electrify heavy-duty transportation, long-duration energy storage, ports, agriculture and industrial operations. Founded with unions, environmental groups, and tribal representatives, the PNWH2 Hub includes representation from these groups on its planned Community Benefits Plan governing board. The hub has also committed to negotiating Project Labor Agreements for all projects over $1 million and anticipates creating more than 10,000 direct jobs. The PNWH2 Hub is eligible to receive up to $1 billion in federal funding over four DOE-defined development phases spanning nine years, with $20 million allocated for Phase 1. DOE will evaluate the hub’s activities and deliver go/no-go decisions at each phase. For more information and updates on the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association, click HERE. n
“Oregon has long been a leader in clean, renewable energy production,” said Governor Tina Kotek. “This transformational opportunity to accelerate development of the nation’s clean energy economy is tailor-made for the Pacific Northwest, where a proud tradition of technological innovation and collaboration in taking on bold challenges is in our nature. I am grateful for this exciting investment from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Biden Administration.” “With this investment, the Pacific Northwest will be able to develop a new clean hydrogen economy that will create local jobs and build on the region’s long history of supporting clean energy resources,” said Oregon Department of Energy Director and PNWH2 Board Vice Chair Janine Benner. “We can seize this opportunity to ensure an equitable clean energy transition that invests in local communities across the region.”

REPRESENTING BUSINESS ISSUES
Unemployment Rate Ticks Up, but Oregon Adds 8,100 Jobs Written by Peter Wong | Oct 18, 2023 | Press Release
The sectors with the greatest job gains in September were
construction, 3,200 jobs; business and professional services, 2,200, and leisure and hospitality, 900. All other sectors were flat; none had reductions of more than 200 jobs. Construction employment surged to another record high in September. At 119,900 jobs in September, construction is up 2,300 jobs, or 2%, since September 2022. Most of the gains in the past 12 months were in specialty trade contractors, which added 4,000 jobs. Construction of buildings had the same employment level as the prior year. Professional and business
Employment Department reports that Oregon economy added 8,100 jobs in September, but unemployment rate ticked up a notch to 3.5%, still among the lowest ever.
O regon’s unemployment rate went up a notch in September, but the 3.5% mark was the fourth month in a row that the rate remained at near- historic lows. The Employment Department reported that Oregon’s economy gained 8,100 nonfarm jobs during the month, and revised the August number downward to a decline of 700 jobs. The August rate was 3.4%. Department economist Gail Krumenauer said the rate has been between 3.4% and 3.5% for four consecutive months. The rate was at a then-record low of 3.4% for the final months of 2019, just before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in spring 2020. The U.S. rate for August and September was at 3.8%. State records go back to 1976; data for earlier years is not comparable with current standards.
services grew at a moderate pace over the past year, adding 3,900 jobs, or 1.5%. This gain was led by management of companies and enterprises, which added 2,400 jobs, or 4.8%. Professional and technical services grew moderately, adding 1,600 jobs, or 1.4%. But the third component industry, administrative and waste services, was nearly flat over that period, cutting 100 jobs, or .1%. And within that industry, employment services was particularly weak, shedding 2,000 jobs, or 4.5%, over the past 12 months. Leisure and hospitality — lodging, restaurants, bars and taverns, entertainment — expanded at a consistent and rapid pace over the past 24 months. During that time, it was up 23,900 jobs, or 12.8%. Despite these rapid gains, at 210,800 jobs in September, it is still 5,700 jobs below its pre-recession peak reached in February 2020. n
