Coveris Wins FINAT Sustainability Award

FINAT, the international association for the self-ad- hesive labelling industry, named Coveris this year’s winner of the 2018 FINAT Recycling and Sustainabili- ty Awards at its annual European Label Forum. The jury recognized that the Coveris facility was al- ready recycling more than 6,500 tons of materials that would normally go into the waste stream and this was not only recycled material generated by Cov- eris, but also by its customers. In addition, Coveris has developed the world’s first automated delaminator of waste material to actively address a major obstacle in label material recycling. To swiftly complete the project, and to recycle mater- ial that could not be processed by its own system, Coveris has embraced collaboration with strategic supply chain partners.

A HEALTHY PLAN FOR BUILDING PROFITS

Global Anti-Counterfeit Packaging Market Surges The global anti-counterfeit packaging market is pro- jected to reach $208.4 billion by 2023, according to a new report from ResearchAndMarkets.com. Based on technology, the anti-counterfeit packaging market is categorized into covert, overt, forensic, and track and trace. Of these, the track and trace technolo- gy has been the largest category in the market, with a contribution of more than 45 percent in 2017. This is attributed to the fact that manufacturers are now pre- ferring tracking and tracing their shipments in order to avoid any technological complications. This packaging technology uses mass serialization and unique codes to provide unique identity to every item and product, which enable the manufacturers to track their prod- ucts. Location and other relevant information about the products can also be traced using this technology. Covert Operations Covert technology is categorized into security la- bels, invisible printing, and others; overt technology is segmented into holograms, color shifting inks, and others; and similarly, track and trace technology is further categorized into machine readable data, radio- frequency identification (RFID), and others. On the basis of application, the anti-counterfeit packaging market is categorized into pharmaceutical and healthcare, food and beverage, clothing and ap- parel, and others. Among these, pharmaceutical and healthcare is the leading category, with a revenue contribution of more than 25 percent in 2017, which is attributed to the growing health concerns and ris- ing pharmaceutical production. In this category, this packaging lends safety to the products and combats the illicit drug market. Secured packaging is required to thwart the sales of fake products and ensure that drugs are not easily imitated. During the forecast period, the fastest growing market is expected to be Asia-Pacific, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 13.5 percent.Growing awareness about the unscrupulous counterfeiting activities among manu- facturers and a decrease in the cost of tracing anti-coun- terfeit technologies is expected to fuel the market growth of the region in the coming years. However, North America was the leading regional- level anti-counterfeit packaging market, with a rev- enue contribution of more than 40 percent in 2017. Increasing awareness about the importance of brand protection among companies is expected to create growth opportunities in the anti-counterfeit packaging market.

Corrugated Market To Increase To $380B

E-commerce, sustainability and digital printing will help demand for corrugated to grow 3.5 percent to 4 percent annually, according to a new study, The Future of Corrugated Packaging to 2023 , from Smithers-Pira. Growth rates for corrugated have dropped from more than 7 percent annually between 2009 and 2010 to just 3.4 percent per annum on average from 2011 to 2017, as the industry came out of the global recession. Two drivers, e-commerce and digital printing, are having an impact on the corrugated industry. E-com- merce packaging favors the use of corrugated board with an estimated $20 billion worth of corrugated materials used in this sector. Markets making use of corrugated for e-commerce fulfillment include consumer electronics, books and media products, fashion, toys, hobbies, and sports equipment. A related trend is the growing adoption of digital printing in corrugated applications. The flexibility of run lengths, savings in set-up costs, and ability to personalize the unboxing experience is leading small and mid-size brands to capture sales and excitement on social media. The study also predicts that the advent of e-com- merce, especially in the grocery sector, is likely to have a slight negative impact on retail-ready packag- ing (RRP) usage, as e-sales do not require any RRP systems. Subscription box services and meal kits that offer direct-to-consumer weekly or monthly delivery of specialty foods will contribute to this slight nega- tive impact on RRP. Resource Label Group, LLC, a full-service provider of pressure sensitive label, shr ink sleeve and RFID/NFC technology for the packaging industry, has acquired Paragon Label, a label manufacturer special- izing in the premium wine segment. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Resource Label is a long-standing portfolio company of First Atlantic Cap- ital, a New York-based private investment firm, and TPG Growth, the middle market and growth equity investment platform of TPG. Located in Petaluma, California, Paragon primarily ser- vices premium wine customers in Sonoma and Napa Counties and offers a full range of flexographic and dig- ital printing capabilities. Paragon is also equipped with proprietary finishing technology that reportedly en- hances the shelf appeal of its customers’ products. Resource Label Group Acquires Paragon Label

FPA Publishes 2018 Flexible Packaging Industry Report The Flexible Packaging Association’s (FPA) has re- leased its 2018 State of the Flexible Packaging Indus- try Report, which provides industry converters, suppliers, investors, and analysts with insight into the performance (i.e. growth, revenue/volume expecta- tions, profitability, and capital spending) of the U.S. flexible packaging industry over the past year. This source of data and information also examines several other aspects of the U.S. flexible packaging industry including: • Performance (growth, revenue/volume expecta- tions, profitability, and capital spending) • Materials and processes (printing and expected material usage) • End-uses (end-use forecast and U.S. Census Bureau retail segments data) • Structure and consolidation (M&A activity) • Imports and exports (trade outlook) • Industry vision, challenges, and critical issues The total flexible packaging industry is estimated to be approximately $31 billion in annual sales for 2017. The $31 billion includes packaging for retail and institutional food and non-food (including med-

ical and pharmaceutical), industrial materials, shrink and stretch films, retail shopping bags, consumer storage bags, and wraps and trash bags. The focus of this report is on the segment of the in- dustry that adds significant value to the flexible ma- terials, usually by performing multiple processes, such as printing, laminating, coating, extrusion, and bag/pouch manufacturing. This segment of the indus- try is estimated to be about $24.1 billion for 2017, and does not include retail shopping bags, consumer storage bags, or trash bags. Flexible packaging represents approximately 19 per- cent of the total $167 billion U.S. packaging industry, and is the second largest packaging segment behind corrugated paper and just ahead of bottles and mis- cellaneous rigid plastics packaging. Flexible packag- ing’s solid long-term strength, coupled with flexible packaging replacing other packaging formats, resulted in the growth of flexibles from 17 percent in 2000 to the current level of 19 percent in 2017. This year’s State of the Industry Report includes data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2016 Annual Survey of Manufac- tures (ASM) full set of reports for all U.S. NAICS in- dustries. Census Bureau data for 2017 is not expected to become available until late fall 2019 or early 2020.

From a simple beginning in 2000, printing labels on letterpress machines, Thai family business Trisan has moved to flexo production with two Nilpeter press- es and one Omet machine. To cope with the extra production capacity and the higher quality labels now being produced by its 50 employees, the com- pany has decided to invest in Flexo Wash cleaning equipment. The first FlexoWash cleaning system at Trisan was an anilox cleaner. So, whenTrisan saw the need for a plate washer, it invested in more FlexoWash technology. It is the first parts washer that Flexo Wash/TGG will install, and the target is that the installation will reduce the manpower involved in cleaning atTrisan’s plant. PMMI The Packaging & Processing Hall of Fame will wel- come five new members as its 45th class at PACK EXPO International 2018, October 14–17, Mc- Cormick Place, Chicago, according to Hall of Fame coordinator and show producer PMMI, The Associa- tion for Packaging and Processing Technologies. This year’s inductees are Tim Bohrer, Keith Pearson, Michael Okoroafor, Susan Selke and ChuckYuska. The Packaging & Processing Hall of Fame recog- nizes career packaging and processing professionals for their significant contributions to the industry and education. An annual event since 1971, the Hall of Fame Commission took a sabbatical after the 2014 class to look internally at its process and ensure it in- cluded an accurate representation of all deserving nominees. With its return this year at PACK EXPO In- ternational, processing professionals were officially eligible for the first time. A 45-year veteran of the packaging industry, Timo- thy Bohrer, Pac Advantage Consulting LLC, is the pri- mary inventor on 15 issued patents. Keith Pearson has experience in manufacturing and converting in the fields of corrugated, carton and print, cores and tubes and multiwall sacks. During his career, he worked in the leadership of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) for more than 15 years, serving as the first African President of WPO from 2006–2011 and as General Secretary from 2012–2017. Michael Okoroafor has 40 patents include everyday items like Coca-Cola’s PlantBottle, Heinz’s Dip N’ Squeeze condiment pack and McCormick & Compa- ny, Inc.’s “First Choice” freshness pack. He also helped develop the flexible film packaging material essential to Coca-Cola’s Freestyle carbonated soft drink dis- pensing system. The current Director of the Michigan State Uni- versity School of Packaging, Susan Selke’s 35 years as a packaging educator includes research on pack- aging sustainability long before sustainability was a buzzword. For nearly three decades, Chuck Yuska served as President and CEO of PMMI, growing the associa- tion’s membership from less than 300 U.S. mem- bers to nearly 850 global members. During his tenure, the PACK EXPO portfolio of trade shows grew from one show to six, with the trade show success allowing PMMI to raise money for schol- arships, education, workforce development and industry relations.
