CONSUMER UNITS

LIVE ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION UK TECHNICAL PRODUCT MANAGER UMER FAROOQ EXPLAINS WHY THE RIGHT PROTECTION MATTERS… Heat pump installations

As the move towards low-carbon heating continues, it is important to understand the electrical protection behind heat pumps. Modern heat pumps are not simple resistive loads. Many use inverter-driven compressors and power electronics, which can introduce residual currents more complex than those found in traditional household circuits. For installers, this means selecting the correct consumer unit, and RCD protection is essential for safety, compliance and long-term reliability. Live Electrical has introduced a dedicated range of metal heat pump consumer units designed for modern installations. Each unit is supplied in a metal-clad non-combustible enclosure and includes a 100A Main Switch for safe isolation, Type 2 20/40kA surge protection device to help safeguard sensitive electronics,

dedicated RCD protection and a MCB for heat pump circuit protection, with additional options of MCB/RCBOs to protect the complete ecosystem. A key consideration is the correct selection of RCD type. Inverter technology can produce residual currents that differ from those associated with conventional loads, including mixed-frequency components and, in some cases, DC-related leakage currents. Using an unsuitable device can increase the risk of nuisance tripping or inadequate fault detection. Type F devices are designed to detect AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents superimposed on up to 10 mA, with improved performance where mixed-frequency residual currents are present. The second version features a CEV range of Type B devices capable of detecting AC, pulsating

DC and smooth DC residual currents, making them suitable for installations involving advanced power electronics. For heat pump duty, the CEB Series Type B HP RCCB is available in Single Phase and 3-Phase formats up to 100A. Designed for heat pump systems, especially those with inverter compressors, it detects AC, pulsating DC and smooth DC residual currents, plus high-frequency leakage.

“Selecting the correct consumer unit and RCD protection is essential for safety, compliance and long-term reliability.”
