Caution issued over plug-in solar PV

Public safety must be the first principle in any rollout of plug-in solar PV units, according to a joint statement issued by industry. Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), Electrical Safety First (ESF), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), NICEIC and SELECT have collaborated to issue the advice. It remains unclear how plug-in solar panels will interact with the millions of existing electrical installations in UK homes, particularly in older properties, potentially increasing the risk of fire and danger. While supporting wider access to cheap and clean energy, the statement cautions these products should only enter the mass market once the necessary regulatory, technical and product safety framework is fully in place. Without that foundation, there is a serious risk of avoidable hazards in homes, uncertainty for the electricity system and lasting damage to public confidence in the energy transition. Government is urged to proceed with caution and ensure that safety, product assurance, competence and system resilience are designed into any rollout

BY CEL O’REILLY, PRESIDENT, IRISH ELECTRICAL BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION Celebrating 25 years of IEBA

In 2001, a group of industry leaders came together with a shared belief: that Ireland’s electrical trade deserved its own safety net - built by the industry, for the industry. Twenty-five years on, IEBA has donated over €2m to hundreds of individuals and families across Ireland. People who lost a spouse. Electricians who couldn’t work. Families facing bills they couldn’t pay. None of that happened without the generosity of this industry. Every fundraiser, every donation, every referral has made a real difference. If you know someone in the trade going through a difficult time, please point them toward us. And if you’ve never considered supporting IEBA - now is the time. TOOLS

WITH EVERY MILLIMETRE MATTERING, THE EXPANDED AND REFRESHED RANGE COMBINES PRACTICAL DESIGN, DEPENDABLE ACCURACY AND TRADE-FOCUSED DURABILITY… C.K Tools’ Measuring and Marking range

The World Cup has a way of reminding us what pressure really looks like. A defender holding a line by millimetres. A striker’s finish decided by the smallest margin. Outcomes that hinge entirely on execution in the moment. On site, tradespeople know that feeling well. Across electrical installation, construction and industrial environments, the margins are just as tight. Speed matters, but accuracy decides the result. Whether setting out containment, installing pipework, marking fixing points or checking levels, even a slightly-misplaced mark or an out- of-level install can mean wasted materials, costly rework and a finish that falls short. In that context, measuring and marking tools aren’t background equipment. They’re the difference between a job that runs cleanly

and one that slips out of control; the equivalent of having the right players in the right positions when it counts. C.K Tools has expanded and refreshed its Measuring and Marking range with exactly these demands in mind. The new line- up combines practical design, dependable accuracy and trade- focused durability across both traditional and digital solutions, built for professionals working under real pressure, not ideal conditions. The expanded range covers box levels, torpedo levels, speed squares, digital measuring tools and specialist marking solutions for electricians, builders, installers and industrial users. Headline additions include the Laser Cross Level and Digital Laser Measure for fast, precise results, and the Electricians Marker Level, developed specifically for marking

and levelling in electrical installation work. The updated marking range also brings professional marker pens and fine nib options built for clarity and consistency on demanding sites. As trades raise expectations around performance and digital adoption accelerates, the C.K Measuring and Marking range is built to match the pace of the modern game. Because whether it’s a final whistle moment or a critical install, precision is what defines the result.

“Speed matters, but accuracy decides the result.”

Local ECA contractors now contribute up to 70% of contract value in Northern Ireland, said the ECA NI chairman, outlining the top challenges facing the sector as procurement and payment issues. Welcoming the return of employer-led apprenticeships, he congratulated ETT on its successful tender to train apprentices at its training facility in Galgorm, with 12 started in January and another 12 to follow in September 2026. “As we celebrate the 125th anniversary, we acknowledge that the future of our industry is with the apprentices of today,” said Richard. “We have always had quality apprentices who have been recognised throughout the UK.”

EXPERT EYE

Working solo on site often means improvising, especially when you’re short a second pair of hands. Whether it’s hanging cabinets or holding a heavy gate in position, there’s always that moment where you could do with a bit of extra support. I was reminded of that recently while dealing with a large gate that had snapped a hinge in the middle of a wet, miserable day. The usual approach would have been to wrestle it into place and pack timber underneath, trying to hit the right height by trial and error. Instead, I reached for my Viking Arm lifters. Within seconds, the gate was smoothly sitting exactly where I needed it lifted and held at millimetre-perfect height, leaving me free to mark and fix the new hinge accurately. No strain, no guesswork and no wasted time. That’s where tools like this really prove their worth. They don’t just make the job easier, they make it more precise and far more efficient. Key features worth noting: • Manufactured in Norway using hardened carbon steel, aluminium and stainless steel • Precise, controlled lifting with incremental lowering • Lifting capacity of up to 150kg It’s a simple concept, but one that delivers real benefits on site. For anyone working alone or looking to reduce physical strain, this is a tool that quickly earns its place in the kit. The original and still the best lifter on the market, Viking Arm for the win! Alan O Connor is an electrician with expertise in automation and robotics. He runs Als Tool Chan- nel, sharing tool and industry knowledge across social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, with a combined audi- ence of over 69.4k followers. IN HIS LATEST COLUMN, ALAN O CONNOR REVIEWS THE VIKING ARM LIFTER, IDEAL FOR OCCASIONS WHEN ELECTRICIANS WORKING ALONE NEED A HELPING HAND…

“For anyone working alone or looking to reduce physical strain, this is a tool that quickly earns its place in the kit.”

L-R: Ken Legros and Karen McAvoy, Ireland’s Electrical Magazine.

A 15-year role with the Irish Electrical Buying Group (IEBG) and 10-year stint with the Association of Electrical Wholesalers (AEW) have allowed Lifetime Achievement recipient Ken Legros to give back to an industry in which he has thrived. Born in 1957 in Glasnevin, Dublin, Ken was educated at Beneavin and Belvedere colleges and was sports mad from a young age including rugby, tennis, golf and athletics. Soccer was his favourite, playing for Home Farm, Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers and Cherry Orchard. Studying business at Trinity College, he pursued a career in sales, lured by a flashy company car and the open road to join Ashtown Trading. Initially working for its hardware business, he switched to the electrical side in 1980; the beginning of a 46-year association with the electrical industry. Ken met his wife Nuala in 1985, with marriage following the next year. Sport had taught him to keep showing up, always give it your best shot and never give up but realising he needed to devote more time to his career, Ken joined Thorn Lighting in 1987. He spent three wonderful years there, looking after big customers such as Eastern Electrical in Ballymount, Kellihers in Tralee and CT Electric in Galway. His “big break” was becoming Ireland sales manager when GE Lighting bought the lamp division of Thorn Lighting in 1990, with Nuala raising their two kids as Ken worked long hours. In 1991, he became MD of the firm, with responsibility for sales and logistics in the 26 counties and NI soon following. parallel, Ken also managed the Scotland and then UK Edmundson sales team. Perks of the job included annual trips to Wimbledon and GE’s Christmas ball on London’s Park Lane, but the position was scrapped in 2010 after the economic crash. A chance conversation between Peter Moriarty and Niall Dunne then resulted in Ken joining IEBG in 2012 as group manager. In his 15 years with IEBG, Ken has overseen the expansion of the group into a leading player in the electrical wholesale market. With his role also including AEW, Ken has worked closely with WEEE Ireland on recycling initiatives, EDA UK to make its staff training modules available to electrical wholesalers in Ireland and introduced an AEW awards lunch in 2022. “These last 15 years have been the most enjoyable of my working life,” says Ken. “I owe the members of the IEBG group a huge debt of gratitude for their friendship, support and trust in me. I’m planning to retire from both the IEBG and AEW at the end of this year, but I will leave with fantastic memories of an industry with good, old- fashioned values and wonderful people.”

Always eager to take on an arduous challenge for charity, CEF Group Manager Dermot Gilmartin is a worthy Unsung Hero. Dermot has worked in the electrical sector since leaving school including stints with local wholesalers before joining CEF in 2005. He has completed many team cycling events for charity, twice leading the CEF team at IEBA-fundraiser Dash of the Derg and taking on the ring of Kerry, Dublin to Sligo, Tyrone to Sligo and the Doddie Weir Trust 170km from Rosslare to Dublin. Dermot has completed the Strandhill Warriors Run five times, raising €20,000 for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Pieta House and the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust created in memory of a family friend who died suddenly abroad. “It’s just nice to give something back and a lot of this is personal to me,” says Dermot. “My parents both died from Alzheimer’s, a neighbour was diagnosed with MND and I had the honour of presenting a cheque for over €10,000 to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, raised to remember Conor Burke who sadly passed away in Thailand last year.” Dermot’s fundraising plans for 2026 include again tackling Dash of the Derg and the Warriors Run, as well as helping with a sensory garden for a child with special needs.

Special Recognition goes to Stephen McManus as founder of Dash of the Derg, a cycling event raising €80,000 to date for the Irish Electrical Benevolent Association (IEBA). First held in 2024, Dash of the Derg was an instant success and is already a key annual event on IEBA’s fundraising calendar. “Post-Covid, there was a lot of doom and gloom, and we decided to try and launch an event that would bring the trade together,” says Stephen. “As we rolled it out and made it an official Cycling Ireland event, it just took off. Ei Electronics has been a fantastic support from the off as headline sponsor, and all the sponsors, participants, volunteers and suppliers have helped make it a tremendous event.” While fundraising is the aim, with the organising team hoping to reach €120,000 this year, Dash of the Derg has also boosted morale in the electrical sector. “When you see the nervousness on the faces of people at the start line who are possibly cycling 116km for the first time, and then the exhilaration on their faces when they finish and receive their medal, it’s priceless,” says Stephen. “Then there’s the camaraderie of talking to the other cyclists afterward about this hill and that hill and the speed; it’s brilliant. The whole day and evening afterwards are very rewarding for both organisers and participants.”
