Ulster University hosted a successful exhibition earlier this year, aimed at raising awareness about the embodied carbon of some of the most common building materials used in architecture. The Carbon Counts exhibition was held at the Belfast campus from 27 March to 29 April, and was open to the public. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, in partnership with Ulster University and the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, brought the exhibition to Northern Ireland. The exhibition showcased key metrics for 10 materials including steel, aluminium, concrete and timber, and represented the embodied carbon impacts of each one. The embodied carbon of a building is the carbon emitted during the creation of materials, including their extraction, processing, manufacture and transportation, as well as during the construction and maintenance phases of the building. The exhibition aimed to promote a better understanding of the environmental impact of construction, and encouraged the use of materials with lower embodied carbon.
