THE COMING OF DR. TORREY. A great many expressions of approval and congratulation have reached us con- cerning the coming of Dr. R. A. Torrey, the new dean of our Institute. Among the printed notices we- take pleasure in giving our readers the follow- ing from the pen of Dr. Gray, dean of the Moody Institute, published in the Chris- tian Worker's Magazine, the organ of that school: " T h e more we think of it, the more we are persuaded that the call of the Rev. R. A. Torrey, D. D., to the Bible Institute at Los Angeles, isi one of the most im- portant events that has occurred for a long while in the history of the church in this country. If the work develops as we believe it will, it will become a strong and enduring bulwark against the tides of error sweeping over the Pacific Coast. We understand it is proposed to change the name of the school; to the Interna- tional Bible Institute, and with just right,- because of its proximity to the Orient, to whose missionaries it ought to be a help and inspiration. This says nothng about the horde of Asiatics now in California, which it will try to reach with the Gospel directly and indirectly. We heartily con- gratulate Dr. Torrey and the Institute, and the whole Church, in that part of the coun- try especially. And in view of the pros- pect the situation now holds out, we may also thank God and take courage.'' REQUEST FOR PRAYER FOR DR. TORREY. "Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Christian Union, 1911. Dr. R. A. Torrey has accept- ed an invitation from the C. I. C. C. U. to hold special meetings for University men, November 5 to 12. Your earnest anil daily prayer is asked for this visit, that God may abundantly bless it to His Glory. ' Ye also helping together by prayer for us.' 2' Cor. 1:11." "Membe rs of His Body." " T h e Christian Church professes to of- fer itself as a body for the re-incarnation of the Lord. The Church supplies the in- visible Jesus with organs, faculties, brains, hearts, eyes, hands and feet. That is the very significance of Church membership. When a man becomes a member of the Church he offers the Lord an organ that His invisible Spirit may use in the fur- ther redemption of the human r a c e ."
THE J5TUDENTS PRAYER UNION. Since "the first mention of the proposed Students Prayer Union on August 1st, there have been a great many who have signified their interest and willingness to co-operate in this united prayer effort. There should, however, be thousands where now there are hundreds. The three- fold object of the Union, viz.: (1) To pray daily that God will Stem the tide of infidelity, doubt and unbelief, especially in our schools and colleges, where it is making such terrible headway among teachers and students alike (2) To pray daily and definitely by name for the conversion of such teachers, students and other individuals as may be laid, as a particular burden upon the hearts of the members of the local circles of prayer; and (3) To pray daily for the speedy evan- gelization of this entire State; will make thorough consecration on the part of in- dividual members an absolute necessity, hence the Union will be serving a double purpose. Further: One can not be thoroughly yielded to God and His will, and praying definitely for the salvation of souls, with- out feeling their own personal responsi- bility. It is therefore hoped that many will thus be prompted to take upon them- selves the definite business of winning souls for Christ. Those who are intimately acquainted with the moral and spiritual conditions existing in our schools and colleges today are unanimous in the opinion that no legis- lation nor ruling of state or local author- ities can bring about the immediate change which alone can save from ruin and ship- wreck the dear young people of our State: the leaders and executives in religious, business, social and governmental affairs of the rising generation. Our Only Hope is In God, and He Is Able. Pray, therefore with us, for " T h e effec- tual,. fervent (energetic or working) pray- er of . a righteous man availeth mu c h" (James 5:161, and because Christ Himself has said, " T h a t if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in H e a v e n" (Matt. 18: 19). If you are desirous of joining with us or would like more information, or litera- ture for circulation or distribution, address Hugh H. Wallace, temporary secretary, care the Bible Institute. Pray and help all you can. for truly the time is short and the need great.
