THE MONTHLY ADVANCE

9362 W. Overland Rd., Boise, Idaho 83709 April 2018

This lesson resonates off the golf course, as well. People worry too much about results and not enough about process. You can’t control the outcome of every event in your life. Instead of dwelling on the results, you should focus on perfecting the process. When something doesn’t go your way, you need to say, “So be it.”When patients come to Advance Physical Therapy for the first time, I always coach them to stop worrying about what brought them here. Putting their energy into making progress is much more productive than dwelling on the past. I’m not saying adopting an attitude of “so be it” in the face of adversity is easy. I struggle with results-based thinking myself. After my recent car accident, I couldn’t help but think of all the things I could’ve done differently, even though the fault was totally with the over driver. Eventually, though, I managed to say “so be it” and start living the solution. We can’t all be professional golfers, but we can all take a lesson from the way they push through the tough moments. When I watch the Masters this year, that’s what I’ll be watching for. Well, that, and some insane shot-making. “When patients come to Advance Physical Therapy for the first time, I always coach them to stop worrying about what brought them here. Putting their energy into making progress is much more productive than dwelling on the past.”

THE ‘SO BE IT’ ATTITUDE WHAT THE MASTERS TAUGHT ME ABOUT PERSEVERANCE

fortitude required. After all, these guys are all world-class athletes. Often, what decides a tournament isn’t the space between players’ drive distances, but the space between their ears. Those who can persevere through the bad shots and mistakes — in golf, there are always mistakes — are the ones who end up top of leaderboard come Sunday. Amen Corner, perhaps more than any other set of holes, puts that mental toughness to the test. easy to pin down with a thesaurus. But one way it has been used over the years is to mean something akin to “so be it.” I find this definition fitting, because an attitude of “so be it” is exactly what you need to make it through Amen Corner. If you hit a bad shot and can’t get past it, you’ll spiral out of control and throw away your round. If you’re willing to say “so be it” and move on, you’ll find the hurdles are much easier to overcome. There’s no direct translation into modern English for “amen.” Its meaning isn’t something that’s

For me, the first week of April is synonymous with the Masters Tournament. It’s a sign that spring is here, and without question, my favorite golf tournament of the year. Watching the Masters is the perfect mix of enjoying the history of Augusta National and the current crop of PGA stars. The most famous stretch of Augusta National is known as Amen Corner. Technically, Amen Corner consists of the second at the 11th hole through the tee shot of the 13th. To any golf fan, these are iconic for their picturesque beauty and grueling difficulty. Amen Corner is one of the sternest stretches of golf on the planet, testing players’ skills, wits, and nerves. When it goes well, as it did for Fred Couples in 1992, it is thrilling. When it doesn’t, it can be cringe-inducing — just ask Jordan Spieth, whose quadruple-bogey on 12 cost him the Green Jacket in 2016. Whether you’re watching a masterpiece or a train wreck, you’re guaranteed there will be drama.

In addition to the technical mastery of PGA pros, I enjoy watching golf because of the mental

Gardening: Bringing Family Together

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER INVESTING IN A FAMILY GARDEN

it’s usually not quality time. Working in a group to create and maintain a garden is a hands-on experience for everyone. It’s a chance to get the whole family involved with a single project, and you can literally share the fruits of your labor. DECIDING ON PLANTS When it comes to deciding which plants you want in your garden, there are many variables to consider. Do you want to grow edible plants, ones that have magnificent blooms, or ones that are easy to care for? Flowers are a good start if you want a plant that grows a little faster; plus, they lend a pop of color to your garden. Growing vegetables is also rewarding, as the kids will take great pleasure in eating what they’ve grown. Other possibilities include sunflowers, blackberries, peas, and lettuce. You might be surprised at how willingly children eat their greens when they’ve had a hand in growing them. Family gardens can bring something new and fresh to your home. So, get outside, enjoy the sun, and discover the joys of plants and gardening.

flowers offer a good way to ease the restlessness. This season, why not bring your family closer together by starting a family garden?

After spending a winter cooped up inside with your family, there might be a little tension between everyone. Fortunately, it’s spring, and the warm weather, melting snow, and blooming

A LEARNING EXPERIENCE Nearly every step in the gardening process can be a learning experience for kids and parents alike. Begin by discussing where you should start and why, what supplies you’ll need, and the types of plants you want to grow. Gardening also offers opportunities to learn about science, ecology, and nutrition. COLLABORATION Gardening gives your family a chance to collaborate. When you’re stuck inside for long periods, you may be spending time together, but

probably dealing with an underlying issue. A physical therapist can help diagnose the source of your discomfort and coach you on techniques to treat that pain at the source. Sometimes, it’s as simple as doing a series of stretches to increase flexibility before you tee off. In other cases, you may need to break bad habits and develop new ones.Whatever the case, physical therapy can provide the body mechanics from which you can build your best swing. As an avid golfer and a graduate of the Titleist Performance Institute, Dr. Al Jones is particularly attuned to the needs of golfers. He’s helped countless patients improve their body mechanics, make it through 18 holes pain-free, and enjoy their favorite hobby more. Don’t let back pain raise your handicap or, even worse, keep you from golfing at all. Before you hit the links this year, let Advance Physical Therapy get your back ready for a great season from tee to green.

Back pain combined with golf swing mechanics can create a vicious cycle. Back pain forces you to alter your swing, leading more to hooks and slices. And poor swing mechanics cause undue strain on your back, making the problem even worse. On and on it goes with no relief in sight. The only way to address the problem is to begin with your back. Proper body function and swing mechanics aren’t the same thing, but you can’t have the second without the first. Trying to craft an ideal swing without first addressing underlying physical issues is a fool’s errand. Posture, balance, flexibility, and strength are crucial to your golf game. Golf may not seem like a labor-intensive sport, but it asks a lot of your fine motor skills. That’s why trying to golf through pain will never result in your lowest scores. While all parts of your body are engaged in a golf swing, the lower back is often the source of the most pain for golfers. If you notice yourself wincing after a shot, you’re

Unforgettable Moments From Golf’s Premier Tournament

won a major in six years. Nicklaus had other ideas. Over the last nine holes, he shot an astounding 30. With a stretch from 15–17 that went eagle, birdie, birdie, Nicklaus took the lead and held on. His swan song still brings tears to the eyes of golf fans worldwide.

records. His iconic fist pump at 18 ushered in a new era for golf.

The Masters Tournament has produced no shortage of incredible moments over the years. It’s golf’s most storied tournament and the only major that’s always played at the same course. Every legendary golfer, from Byron Nelson to Sergio Garcia, has strolled up and down the fairways of Augusta National. You could fill a book with stories from the Masters, so let’s call this a very brief overview of some Masters memories. In 1997, Tiger Woods was a 21-year-old golfer with plenty of hype but no major victories. It only took four days in Augusta for him to go from a relative unknown to a superstar. He had an auspicious start on Thursday, shooting a 70, but he was three strokes off the leader. Then he decided to blow everybody away. Woods turned in rounds of 66, 65, and 69 from Friday through Saturday. He finished at 18 under and 12 shots ahead of his nearest competitor, both 1997: TIGER POUNCES

2012: BUBBA SAVES PAR, AND THE GREEN JACKET

When Bubba Watson shanked his tee shot on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff, observers immediately thought he was toast. What happened next is perhaps the greatest single shot in Masters history. From deep in the trees, with no green in sight, Watson produced a hooking approach that still seems to defy the laws of physics. Two puts later, he was wearing the Green Jacket. Talk about calm under pressure!

1986: JACK’S LAST HURRAY

Jack Nicklaus entered the final day of the 1986 masters tied for ninth. Nobody expected him to be a realistic threat despite 17 major victories to his name. The Golden Bear, after all, hadn’t

as the leader of the pack should, then we are very likely to show loyalty and deference, regardless of the lifestyle. So, here’s the deal: Give us loyalty and the right human behavior towards us, and we’ll respond with respect and loyalty, no matter what life situation we’re in. Add purpose to that, and we’ll give you the latter, plus we’ll be healthier, happier, and have more fun with humans. Harry

It’s been said by those who are experts in dog psychology that dogs need a purpose. It may be herding livestock, going to work with their owner at a construction site, or being a show dog. Many dogs don’t have the opportunity to perform some productive function due to their environment and the lifestyle of their owners. They do have a job, though. In those situations, their job is loyalty. Loyalty and purpose are the “sweet spots” in the lives of dogs, as I see it. Loyalty is a reflection of our relationships with our owners, and purpose is the opportunity to perform in something that benefits humans and other animals. When we are given a purpose, we are more likely to return the favor of loyalty. It doesn’t stop there, though. If our owners are kind and perform

delays, and long flights, take a deep breath and roast marshmallows over the fire with the people you love.

Family adventures are a great way to grow closer and develop meaningful connections. But with lodging prices rising and the logistical nightmare that traveling with the entire family can be, many Americans are looking at a new option: ditching the beaches and resorts and heading to the great outdoors.Actually, we know this option isn’t new at all. Spending time outdoors with family may very well be one of the most time-honored traditions ever. CAMPING Lodgings and flights are expensive, so going on a family vacation can cost thousands of dollars — and that’s just for the basics! If you have children or grandkids who aren’t up for the challenge of an arduous daylong trek, there’s sure to be a shorter scenic trail. If nothing else, you can always turn around and backtrack the way you came. FISHING Fishing is a great way to get out and do something relaxing yet challenging. It doesn’t require a lot of
