Acme Corrugated Box Soars To New Heights Of Automation BY LEN PRAZYCH Hatboro, Pennsylvania based Acme Corrugated Box, like its name says, has always aspired to excellence. With the recent completion of its 80,000-square-foot expansion and the addition of the newer, faster, and more automated machinery, the company is more than well-po- sitioned to soar to new heights in corrugated box making superiority. Indeed, Acme has successfully built the automated box plant of the future and that future is now.
WestRock To Close Plant In Columbus, Indiana
Atlanta, Georgia based WestRock announced that it will be closing its corrugated packag- ing facility in Columbus, Indiana, according to news reports. Robby Johnson, APR Senior Manager of Corporate Communications, said that produc- tion at the plant, which employs about 100 people, would cease in mid-October though some employees may continue to be em- ployed after that date. The plant is expected to be fully closed by mid-January 2024. The company cited significant capital in- vestments needed at the Columbus facility to stay competitive as reasons for the closure. No long-term plans for the site have been offi- cially announced, although selling is property is being considered. The plant was originally opened by Weyer- haeuser Inc. in 1968. The company welcomed more than 150 customers, public officials, and invited guests to an Open House on May 12 of this year. At the event Acme unveiled its sleek, new machinery and the enormous ma- terial handling and storage capabilities made possible by increasing the size of its 234,000 square-foot facility by more than a third. The genesis of the expansion project began in 2017, when the com- pany began having “capacity issues,” specifically, there wasn’t WIP room to store the board that was being produced virtually non-stop off its 98-inch Fosber corrugator. “We weren’t efficient with our space,” concedes Bob Cohen, President of Acme Corrugated Box. “We were losing material because of lack of space, we’d have damage to our sheets, there would be falling units, we had material coming off the cor- rugator with no place to put it, all of which resulted in waste and added Bob Cohen left, President of Acme Corrugated Box, with Jeremy Cohen, his son and the company’s Vice President and General Manager.

“We are thrilled and honored that Fosber has chosen to join HP’s SmartStream Partner Program. Their expertise in the corrugated packaging industry is unmatched, and together, we have the potential to transform the market,” said Stephen Shannon, WW Go-to-Market Manager, HP PageWide Industrial Packaging.
It also helps guarantee consistent quality for micro- flute production, catering to lightweight papers down to 50gsm/10lb mfs, and is available in 70-inch and 98-inch width. Faster and wider than a laminator, the Quantum Corrugator offers higher productivity and production flexi- bility. It supports standard plain board as well as varnished and special coated options. Additionally, the Quantum Corrugator enables the pro- duction of larger printed sheet sizes, further expanding creative possibilities for packaging manufacturers. With an OEM interface integrating the E+L Smartline camera system, the Quantum Corrugator enables effort- less coordination of job changes within a roll. This means that the T700i and T1195i Presses can ef- ficiently print rolls containing multiple jobs, adapting or- der sizes to match downstream converting processes and customer demand. Through this collaboration, Fosber and HP aim to trans- form the corrugated packaging landscape, empowering manufacturers to achieve new levels of productivity, cre- ativity, and customer satisfaction. By joining forces with E+L, a German engineering com- pany specializing in systems for web guiding, web tension control, and web inspection, they help ensure that their expertise and solutions converge to deliver value to their customers.
“By combining Fosber’s cutting-edge corrugator tech- nology with HP’s advanced digital printing capabilities, we can revolutionize the way boxes are produced. This stra- tegic relationship opens up new possibilities for efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the corrugated packaging indus- try, and we look forward to the positive impact it will have on manufacturers and their customers.” Jeff Pallini, CEO of Fosber America, left, and Steve Shannon, WW Go-to-Market Manager at HP, celebrate their partnership.

Ralf Sammeck, CEO of Koenig & Bau- er Segment Sheetfed, expressed his desire to dedicate the plaque to “honor Paul and what he has achieved in his life.” Eric Malnove, Malnove’s owner, who brought his 4-year- old daughter, Charlotte, reiterated Malnove’s commitment to its customers and its employees. “Throughout his life, my father instilled in us the values of hard work, integrity, and independence,” he said. “He believed in the power of family, the strength of a team, and the importance of investing in the latest technologies to stay ahead in the
of 18,000 sheets/hour, precision, and versatility. These ad- vancements allow Malnove to continue to cater to a di- verse range of packaging requirements for its clients. In addition, this investment aligns with Malnove’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. The Koenig & Bauer Rapida 145 press utilizes eco-friendly practices to help minimize waste and energy consumption during the printing process. By incorporat- ing environmentally-conscious technologies into its oper- ations, Malnove is taking strides towards its sustainability goals and contributing to a greener future for the packag- ing industry. The plaque, unveiled during a ceremony held at Mal- nove’s Omaha plant, pays tribute to the visionary leader whose entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excel-
industry. It is with that spirit that we unveil our new Koenig & Bauer printing press, a piece of equipment that supports our next generation and embodies the progress that we have made.” Paul Malnove founded Malnove Inc. in 1948. His legacy continues after his death at the age of 97. Domtar Announces $5K Donation To Local College Domtar’s Kingsport Mill in Kingsport, Ten- nessee, announced its presentation of a $5,000 donation to Northeast State Com- munity College. The funds will be used for scholarships and were given as a token of acknowledg- ment for the invaluable use of the college’s Regional Center for Advanced Manufactur- ing (RCAM) facility during the mill’s recent conversion. “We are very grateful for the hospitality and support shared by Northeast State,” said Troy Wilson, Kingsport Mill Manager. “While our mill was shut down, we were able to train employees at RCAM in prepa- ration for the startup of our new machine.” In 2020, Domtar announced plans to transform the mill’s uncoated freesheet pa- per machine into the second-largest 100 percent recycled containerboard machine in North America. Operations resumed in January 2023, and the machine can produce approximate- ly 600,000 tons of recycled linerboard and corrugated medium annually. The mill is the largest recycled manufacturer in the state of Tennessee.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

interest in digital printing technol- ogy. However, he is equally aware of the significant advancements made by the flexographic industry. As ARC International celebrates its 40th year of operation, Foran takes immense pride in being a major supplier of anilox, wiper, feed, glue, meter, and knife rollers

to both the corrugated and preprint industries. The company also stands out for producing the highest quality 100 percent carbon fiber doctor blade chambers. Originally established as Anilox Roll Company, Inc., the company initially provided mechanically engraved and chrome-plated anilox rollers. However, in 1987, Foran made a pivotal investment in the company’s future by acquiring its first laser engraved ceramic equipment for anilox rollers. While this technology was initially designed for contin- uous design rubber printing rollers, Foran recognized its potential for creating more durable and consistent anilox rollers. Despite some initial challenges with the roughness of the engraved cells, Foran remained determined to find a better solution. To overcome these challenges and meet the grow- ing demand for laser engraving, Foran collaborated with a knowledgeable engineer from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Together, they developed a specialized laser engraving system exclusively for ceramic rollers to help re- duce gas usage and energy requirements while achieving more consistent and affordable laser anilox rollers. In the present day, ARC International continues to in- vest in state-of-the-art laser engraving equipment, incor- porating innovative technologies such as Fibertronics and Twin Track. These advancements result in anilox cells with flatter bottoms, promoting efficient ink release and easy cleaning. This is particularly crucial for sheet-fed process print- ing on micro-fluted board and preprint flexo equipment, where high-quality graphics are in demand, even on jum- bo flexo machines with large anilox rollers. Foran emphasizes that ARC’s commitment to its cus- tomers goes beyond manufacturing and supplying prod- ucts. The company takes pride in its technical support team, comprising individuals with diverse backgrounds, including former flexo press supervisors, corrugated plant managers, preprint production managers, laser operators, ink, and printing plate tech reps. Their combined expertise helps ARC provide top-tier

support and guidance to customers on their graphics proj- ects. Throughout the years, Foran has actively participated in industry organizations like TAPPI and the AICC, foster- ing relationships with flexographic and corrugator equip- ment manufacturers to better serve mutual customers. Collaboration with ink, printing plate, and doctor blade equipment specialists is also essential, as all these com- ponents must work together harmoniously to achieve the highest quality printing results. To meet graphic requirements, press operators must receive corrugated board with no warp or bonding issues. ARC International has been steadfast in its commitment to supply premium glue and meter rollers that offer consis- tent starch application and extended roller life. The company’s Cladded Stainless Steel glue applicator rollers eliminate the need for chrome plating, and prevent- ing corrosion, rust, or delamination common in sprayed surfaces. These rollers are manufactured to tight TIR and taper OEM specifications and come with a 5-year guaran- tee against corrosion or rust. When used in combination with ARC’s premium meter/ doctor rollers with surfaces like tungsten carbide, diamond ceramic, or stainless steel, efficient and consistent starch application is ensured. Mitsubishi To Showcase Prefeeder At TAPPI CorrExpo 2023 Hunt Valley, Maryland based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, a supplier of corrugating and box-making ma- chinery, announced it will highlight an array of technology and customer support service investments during CorrEx- po 2023 in Booth 701.
Is Coming to...
Say, ‘Hello’ to Bob & Bender in the Exhibit Hall.
AI Enabled Robotics & Vision Technology for the Corrugating Industry
“The name of the game is continual reinvestment on behalf of our customers in order to meet their demands for productivity-enhancing technology at the front of the line and crucial service and support on the back-end,” said Shoji Isoai, President, MHIA Corrugating Machinery Divi- sion. “With more than 200 EVOLs currently in operation in North America, our customers won’t settle for anything less — and neither will we.” The Mitsubishi Prefeeder and recently opened West Coast-based distribution and support facility headline the latest reinvestments. The Mitsubishi Prefeeder is de- signed for faster throughput and front-of-line reliability. Introduced in North America in 2022, the technology is being adopted by customers looking to keep their premi- um EVOL box-making equipment operating with maximum efficiency. The company’s research shows that 50 percent of equipment downtime is caused by auxiliary equipment, with prefeeders accounting for nearly 38 percent of that total. The Mitsubishi Prefeeder is currently available for the EVOL 84 and EVOL 100 — either 350 BPM or 400 BPM — or for any equipment that is a top printer. It is able to run a continuous shingle of either singlewall or doublewall sheets, with a minimum sheet of 8.7 x 27.2 and a maximum sheet of 37 x 100 and boasts a lifting device that reverses the sheet stack. The company’s new West Coast-based distribution and support facility buttresses its rapid response capabilities. Based in Las Vegas, Nevada and opened in early 2023, the fully staffed 20,000-square-foot outpost helps ensure reduced shipping costs and faster delivery for EVOL cus- tomers west of the Mississippi River. Also featured at Booth 701 will be the MC-100. Intro- duced in 2021, the Flexo Folder Gluer boasts ease of op- eration and enhanced quality-control for plant personnel.
