But the Holy-Spirit constantly retu rn ed in convicting, con vincing power till, in despair, he threw up his hands and surrendered. Then Christ was tru ly formed w ithin and the peace of God which passeth all knowledge came in, never to leave. Twenty years ago he had, to satisfy his mother, joined the church, w ithout th e sligh test awakening or con viction of the Holy Spirit. He had kept up th e m iserable pretense for all those twenty years. P rom inent in church work, active in all the ritualism of the religious world, scrupulous and exact every night in saying his prayers but only to ease his conscience and Pharisaically reading cer tain passages from the Bible, living a life of w retched compromise, the world’s pleasures indulged in and secret sin fastening more and more its deadly hold on him men tally and physically, and un til th a t night he had never seen a man offering thank s to God in a public place. He had often listened to men mumbling a few words in homes over the food, going through the mere form and then growling over the meal to the poor patien t wife, and snapping a t the children. He had never even heard of a man keeping a prayer-list and was ashamed to ask its meaning. As he compared and contrasted his hollow, shallow pro fession w ith this lad’s strong, joyful experience of the reality of the indwelling Christ, he saw himself for once as he looked before a holy righteous God. Stripped of all his professionalism naked and exposed to the all scrutiniz ing eye of Him before whom all things are visible. He trembled and shook over the hell awaiting him. There was no sleep th a t night, his pillow was soaked w ith tears.- The conflict waged hot and fierce, for two weeks. Conviction
