MARCH 2022

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA

While TPT celebrates all the people who have made – and continue to make - Minnesota a great state, we take special pride in our Women’s History Month programming each March. To honor the contributions of women through the decades, we shine a spotlight on the movers and shakers who have shaped the communities we call home. Even when facing unimaginable hardships by today’s standards, women trailblazers have deftly paved the way for women (and men) to grow, achieve and lead. At TPT, we know history. Stories of our past are woven through many of our programs, and sharing the voices, experiences and impact of Minnesota women is an honor and privilege we take seriously. Minnesota has been home to many women who have achieved historic feats: Our Rights ’ Dr. Josie Johnson, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, the Indigenous matriarchs of Nokomis: Voices Of Anishinabe Grandmothers , Justice Roselie Wahl in Girl From Birch Creek , Olympian Suni Lee, Actor Judy Garland, Dorothy McIntyre in Becoming Big League , Chef Leann Chin, North Star’s Emily Grey, Lena Smith, Ethel Ray Nance and Anna Arnold Hedgemen, and Out North’s Karen Clark, to name a few. Minnesota is also home to a couple of very famous fictious women heroes: Betty Crocker and Mary Tyler Moore. Find these stories at tpt.org/minnesotawomen . We look forward to some wonderful women-led shows in the coming weeks. Call the Midwife , Season 11, and the much-anticipated season two of Sanditon , both premiere Sunday, March 20 on TPT 2. TPT will also premiere its documentary, Bring Her Home , which centers on the epidemic of murdered and missing Indigenous women. We are so proud of the important storytelling that TPT Producer Leya Hale has infused in the urgent issues facing Indigenous communities, and we are eager to share it with PBS stations across the country, beginning March 21 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2. Learn more at tpt.org/bringherhome . Also, check out a list of more Women’s History Month programming at tpt.org/womenshistory .

As always, a warm thank you goes out to all our members. Thank you for your support.

Best Regards, Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

Janis Ian Sees The Light at The End of The Line By Sandra Ebejer

Janis Ian was only 14 years old when she penned her first single, "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)." Though the song, released in 1966, became a hit, its commentary on interracial relationships was enormously controversial for the time. But the backlash didn't stop Ian from releasing new music. In the ensuing years, she continued to write and record some of folk music's most enduring songs, including "Jesse," "Stars," and the Grammy Award-winning "At Seventeen."

Now, at 70, Ian is promoting her final solo studio album, The Light at The End of The Line , and its

accompanying tour. The album offers a brilliantly crafted collection of

songs on aging, identity, and gratitude, and is a bittersweet goodbye of sorts to those fans who have supported her for the last 56 years. Next Avenue recently spoke with Ian. Next Avenue: What made you decide to release this album now? Janis Ian: I decided after Folk is the New Black , which was 15 years ago, that if I made another album, it would be as impeccable as possible. I didn't want to put out an album the way that you have to put them out when you're with a major [label] where, ready or not, here you go. And I didn't want to put it out before I felt like the times made sense for it. Next Avenue: Though it was released in 1965, 'Society's Child' could still be relevant today. Even 'At Seventeen' doesn't feel far off the mark from what a lot of

“A song can pull together an entire movement.” –Janis Ian

young people go through now. What is it like to know that a song you write could stand the test of time for decades? Janis Ian: Certainly with 'Society's Child,' none of us expected it to have the effect it did or the controversy. It's sad to me that both of those songs are still so relevant. It's a sad commentary on our country. I wish somebody like P!nk would cover ['Society's Child'] because I think it could lend some strength to a lot of people.

ATough Question Reveals an Identity Crisis By Dan Kadlec

My Dad bowled. I played softball. These were the only men's groups I ever knew. So, I had no idea what to expect when my new friend Oliver invited me to a restaurant with three other fellows I had never met. The only thing I knew for sure was that I could leave my bat and ball at home. When this dinner took place, in the summer of 2021, we were emerging — briefly, it turned out — from the COVID-19 lockdown. So, our social skills had rusted. T-shirts were the chief fashion statement at the table; small talk came slowly. Oliver was fully occupied reveling in his creation: the first in-person interaction involving unacquainted humans in more than a year. His obvious contentment had me feeling like I was part of some pre-post-pandemic social experiment.

haven't triggered my pension. I certainly feel like I am still working.

Then again, I'm under no deadline pressure. I write what I want when I want. That sounds a lot like not working. Until this group gathered to come out of COVID isolation, I had yet to confront my life change in such a stark and public way. I didn't have to. Everyone was at home. …

Finally, Steve, who identified himself as an economist, seized control and bore in as an economist would.

"Why don't we start this way," he said, surveilling the table. "Who is still working?"

The question ‘who’s still working?’ gave this new retiree pause

"So, you're retired," Steve said.

In that moment, I came to grips. It didn't matter that I was busy or fulfilled, or how I thought of myself. It didn't matter that I was enjoying filling pages with words more than at any time in my past. The world saw me as retired. I might as well own it, I thought. I smiled and said, "Yes, I guess I am."

Steve looked squarely at me, as if I was the most puzzling. I had put on a spiffy collared shirt, which stood out in this sea of crew-neck cotton. Maybe that drew his attention, which was unfortunate for me because this conversation starter left me momentarily wordless. Oh God, I thought. How do I answer? I still do project work. I’m writing a memoir, which I hope to sell. I'm not collecting Social Security and

“There are so many reasons why we support TPT, but two are especially important at this time. First, we feel that trustworthy news and science programming are necessary to inform and elevate our community. Next, the quality educational programs are essential while schools are interrupted due to the pandemic. TPT is unique in responding to current societal needs while innovatively looking towards the future. Turning Pain Into Purpose: How Sean Burns Is Rewriting the Ending to His Story One man shares his journey facing addiction and intergenerational trauma, and the steps it takes to turn "pain into purpose."

By T. Aaron Cisco

Over the past few decades, there have been widespread efforts to destigmatize mental illness across multiple facets of contemporary society. From increasingly common portrayals among fictional film and television characters, to notable, pop-culture figures being candidly outspoken, to increased coverage in media outlets and academic institutions, addressing and acknowledging mental health is mainstream.

Within Black communities, however, there are numerous factors, both internal and external, that compound and exacerbate mental health issues, particularly around chemical dependency and substance abuse. Intergenerational trauma caused by centuries of systemic and institutional racism, the ongoing pressures of second-class citizenship and broad generalization/demonization, along with the stresses of economic and societal disenfranchisement, and a subcultural identity built primarily on survival, has resulted in African American adults being 20 percent more likely to report psychological distress than their white counterparts. Sean Burns (pictured above) is an educator at Prodeo Academy, a coach with Step with Soul step group, and the entrepreneurial founder of Beaucoup Boil, a pop-up Cajun/Soul restaurant. He's also just recently celebrated 100 days of sobriety and has firsthand experience with mental health issues. I met up with Sean to discuss his progress and triumphs, and explore his past processes and current methods,

in the hopes that by sharing his story, perhaps we can not only chip away at that stigma, but also provide some insights into rectifying the underlying issues as well. There are so many people going through or maybe just starting to go through what you've experienced. How do you explain to them that there's a way out, especially when, in our community, the Black community, there's a strong reluctance or aversion to even broaching the subject? For anyone who's not ready to [stop using drugs or alcohol], I always ask this question: Has it worked doing it your way? Is what you're doing what you want? I mean, if this is working, if you really think it's working, the damage and the pain you're causing or feeling or living with, if that's what you really want? But if it hasn't worked doing it your way, then it's time to go. Because when you don't know how to get to a point to feel better, you still know that what you're feeling now

isn't good. It's not what you're supposed to be, or what you deserve to be feeling. When you're using, and when you're drinking? You know what that's going to bring. It's going to bring a sense of comfort and feeling fine - for a little while. But then what? It's right back to where you were. And more, it's going to bring on destruction, and more destruction over the long term. With the pandemic, people have been isolated physically and psychologically, and now they're getting out, in some cases for the first time in a long while. What are some of the steps that you've taken to protect against those temptations? It's three things. One, my faith. Two, you know movie trailers, right? Trailers get you pumped up. [My wife] Dawn and I (pictured right) are huge Marvel fans, and every time a new Marvel trailer comes out, I send it to her. Well, I have a movie trailer I play constantly. That movie trailer is the movie of my life, using. In treatment, we called it "Play the Tape Back." And when I play the tape back, that's all I need to see — I don't want to go down that road. And the third thing that I use is…it's my wife. She came back to me. She came back. Once she asked me what would make me want to go back to using. Nothing. I look at what I had, and what I have, and there's no comparison. Not a damn thing. And if there's something or someone, anything that makes you feel love or loved - even when you think you don't deserve it, when you know you don't deserve it - then you focus on that.

How has your personal journey impacted your professional endeavors?

Through Beaucoup Boil, through Step With Soul, and also even through my marriage and my family, I'm turning pain into purpose. Now that the fog has lifted, I just pray that I can continue to feed both of those ministries. Because that's what they are. Beaucoup Boil and Step With Soul? They're ministries. Cooking feels good, and the food tastes good, but I'm more about how is this impacting you in conversations and giving you an authentic experience?

It's all about creation and making people feel good and impacting the community.
