Thinking Matters 2018

Customers enjoy the pupil-designed chairs at the DT garden party at Founder’s Day.

far, students have made wacky-racer style cars and are now making decorative notebooks. It is always a fun lunchtime for all who take part and a chance for students to put their own personal spin on the projects they produce. Year 8 pupils start the year with a skills-based project that requires them to manufacture a metre high poppy from copper and steel. These products double as a birdbath and need to be constructed accurately to a very high standard so that they all look the same and can later be sold at the Christmas fair to raise money for charity. Last year we raised over £800 and sold out within two hours. Creative Week has always been a lot of fun and last year was no exception. The Year 9 pupils who opted for the D&T option were divided into four groups of ten and then challenged to make a go-kart using engines that had been donated by Friends of Dulwich. At the end of the three days we took the karts over to the running track where we raced them to see who could achieve the fastest lap. Our Year 12 pupils have been busy during their first term making jewellery out of solid silver. They have taken part in two master classes from professional silversmiths and worked closely with Lila’s jewellery shop on Lordship Lane where they sold their micro

collection under the brand name Dulwich Silver. Last year many of the pieces sold in the first couple of weeks leaving some costumers enquiring when more would be due in! The DT teachers decided to create a garden party for Founder’s Day at the end of the 2018 summer term. We grilled two legs of pork on the barbeque created at Engineers Club and served cocktails mixed with fruit juice from Jim’s A level apple press. Central to our event was a chair designed by Sam (Year 13) for which we manufactured a short run of ten using oversized bamboo and fabric kindly donated by Cath Kidston. The day was an overwhelming success selling all the chairs and celebrating a fantastic year in the department.

The College environment benefits from pupil-made poppies.
