Thinking Matters 2018

The Physics department has been busy with an array of activities. A small collection of which we have managed to squeeze in here, which range from national grid visits to the experiencing the world of particle physics at CERN and the Diamond Light Source. Though the trips we offer span all areas of Physics, projects that are run are most impressive. All projects and experiments are pupil led and demonstrate the passion and independence of our physicists. National Grid Substation

CERN Particle Physics Summer School

Students from the Remove and Year 11 spent the day at the National Grid Substation in Wimbledon. and discovered how they deliver power to the South East of London, the London Underground system and the National Rail ‘Being able to see the massive circuits and breakers that help charge our phones was really awesome!’ Ossian, Year 13 October CERN Trip Our annual trip to CERN, taking 30 Remove boys, explores the different detectors and experiments taking place at the world’s biggest machine.

Pupils who win an essay competition go to CERN for one week where they experience all that goes into working on the LHCb detector. ‘I had a great time learning some advanced beyond-the-syllabus physics as well as exploring Geneva and making some invaluable friendships. It has spurred me on with my physics studies and I hope to one day be working as researcher there.’ Louie, Year 13 ‘With the Muon Project we were left to our own devices to formulate a hypothesis independently and create a method for testing it, with the aim of presenting our findings in front of a lecture theatre at Queen Mary’s. The Muon Project gave me an insight into how Physics is conducted beyond A level and I realised I wanted to study it at university.” James, Year 13 Weizmann Safecracking ‘I found the experience of exploring physics concepts and then building physical manifestation of them in the form of puzzles fascinating. It was very interesting to be able to visualise abstract concepts in real life. The best bit was attempting to crack other teams’ safes.” Saatwik, Year 13 Muon Project

Remove pupils on the October CERN Trip gathered outside the Globe.

New Scientist Live ‘This trip inspired me to write my Extended Essay and some of my Personal Statement related to the engineering topics which were covered at talks on ‘self-healing buildings

and roads’. Daniil, Year 13
