Setting the Record Straight on The Tooth Fairy
Did you know that most dentists get to meet The Tooth Fairy while we’re in dental school? It’s a huge honor. Since Aug. 22 is National Tooth Fairy Day, I wanted to share what I know about my friend, The Tooth Fairy. When I was growing up, The Tooth Fairy would give us a quarter for every baby tooth we lost. It wasn’t anything too crazy, but it was something my brothers and I looked forward to when we put that tooth under our pillow before bed. By the time my daughters were old enough to start losing their baby teeth, The Tooth Fairy had increased the going rate on baby teeth. Our girls always got a dollar for each tooth. However, there was once a small crisis regarding how that dollar was delivered. One morning after losing a tooth, one of our daughters came downstairs in tears. When we asked her what was wrong, she sobbed, “The Tooth Fairy left me metal money. It’s supposed to be paper money!” The Tooth Fairy had left her four quarters instead of a dollar bill. Fortunately, as I mentioned earlier, I know The Tooth Fairy personally. When we met while I was in dental school, they gave me a 1-800 number to contact the fairy in case of emergencies. I got in touch with The Tooth Fairy, who told me to have my daughter leave the quarters and a note explaining the situation under her pillow that night, and they would take care of the rest.
Our daughter wrote a note asking if she could get paper money instead of metal money. The next morning, the quarters were gone, and in their place was a crisp one-dollar bill. Problem solved. She used this strategy again when The Tooth Fairy took a tooth she wanted to keep. She wrote another note asking for her tooth back and The Tooth Fairy delivered while letting her keep the money. A lot of people think The Tooth Fairy has to take the baby tooth in order for kids to get money, but this isn’t true. It’s really a case by case basis. The Tooth Fairy knows if kids want to keep their baby teeth, they can keep their tooth and still get money or other treats as a congratulation. Another myth is that decayed baby teeth are worth less money. The Tooth Fairy knows that a little bit of decay can be caused by biological things, not because a child wasn’t brushing or flossing properly. They’re still going to leave the full bounty, whatever that may be. Once, a patient told me their kid got $20 from The Tooth Fairy. The price of teeth has certainly gone up since I was a kid! Fortunately, as I mentioned earlier, I know The Tooth Fairy personally.
As a dentist, I’m trained to answer a lot of questions about The Tooth Fairy, but one thing I don’t yet know is whether or not The Tooth Fairy will collect a baby tooth that isn’t lost until adulthood. It’s not unheard of for a baby tooth to stick around until a patient is 40 or 50 years old. Should The Tooth Fairy still come? This is a question I’m calling on my patients to help me answer. Send us an email, visit our Facebook page at Facebook.com/ ExceptionalSmilesatLanderbrook, or tweet using #ToothOfTheMatter to chime in with your thoughts. I’ll be sitting down to chat with The Tooth Fairy soon, and I’d love to have as much feedback from my patients as possible on this pressing subject.

YOU’RE GETTING VERY SLEEPY ... Establishing a Bedtime Routine for the School Year
B etween vacations, bonfires, and vital to get your kids back on a proper sleep schedule. In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, getting enough sleep can significantly improve a child’s growth and cognitive function. But getting a restful night’s sleep is easier said than done when kids have had almost complete freedom for three months. Try these tips to get your kids snoozing through August and prepared for school. sporting tournaments, your children’s sleep schedule probably went on break when they did this summer. With school fast approaching, it’s
Start Early and Go Slowly When practicing this tip, think of the old adage: “It takes 21 days to break a habit.” If your kids have been going to bed late this summer, set a time when they must go to bed, but don’t make it too far off the time they have been regularly hitting the hay. If they shuffle off to bed around 10 p.m., push their bedtime to 9:45 p.m., and then push it back to 9:30 p.m. one week later. Slowly work your way back to an appropriate time, and bedtime will be easier when school starts. Make It Easy Though the days may be getting shorter, it’s still relatively light out at night, making it nearly impossible for your kids to doze off when they should. Sleep experts recommend creating a
sleeping space that mimics a cave: dark, cool, and quiet. This means sunlight shouldn’t sneak into the room, and the home should be a quiet zone after bedtime. No one wants to sleep while everyone else is having fun, so it’s important that everyone in the home is quiet at bedtime. Just Relax This is a rule your family should follow year-round, not just when you want to reestablish a routine. At a certain time each night, begin the nightly wind-down. For example, at 8 p.m. shut off your screens, put on pajamas, and engage in a relaxing activity, like reading a book or doing some yoga. Signaling to your body and your family that it’s time for bed will help your kiddos, and you, fall asleep at an appropriate time.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
“I happily drive one hour and 20 minutes to experience the highest competency and highest affinity dental care I have ever encountered. I believe that says it all.” -Richard O. “The staff and doctors are the best I have ever dealt with in a dental office. Since I move frequently, finding a good dentist and staff can be quite frustrating. Since I was referred by a friend to try it, I will be sure to tell others. Don’t go anywhere else!” -Brent C.

An Easier Way to Maintain a Healthy Smile
Why are hygiene appointments important? Most patients refer to their six months hygiene appointment as a “teeth cleaning.” This is technically true, but your hygienist does so much more for your oral health during this appointment. In addition to cleaning your teeth, we also inspect your teeth for decay using dental X-rays, intraoral pictures, and a clinical exam by one of the doctors. During your hygiene appointment, we can also do an oral cancer screening, a periodontal health assessment, and a fluoride treatment as needed. The goal for this appointment is to identify connections between your oral health and your overall health.
You might have noticed some new messages from our office recently, especially if you haven’t scheduled your next hygiene appointment. Don’t worry, we promise you’re not going to be flooded by spam emails and calls from the office. Exceptional Smiles @ Landerbrook is automating our scheduling process, so we can spend more time with patients while they’re here and less time on administrative tasks. We encourage patients to schedule their next hygiene appointment after their current appointment is over, while they’re still in the office. This is because it’s not uncommon for one missed hygiene appointment to turn into years without seeing the dentist. Patients who forget their regular hygiene appointments often don’t come back until they have a painful emergency that needs to be addressed right away. That said, we know it can be difficult to schedule another appointment six months out. This is why our new system will send you occasional reminders via email, mail, or over the phone until you have the opportunity to check your calendar and schedule that next appointment. The goal is to achieve a regular, consistent schedule for all patients. Consistency will help your teeth stay cleaner, last longer, and prevent painful problems from developing.
We have many convenient options for scheduling your next appointment.

After President Garfield’s death, his wife Lucretia Garfield added the Memorial Library wing to the house, creating the very first presidential library in the United States. Mrs. Garfield lived at Lawnfield until her death in 1918, and in 1936, Garfield’s children donated the house to the Western Reserve Historical Society for use as a museum. On Dec. 28, 1980, Congress declared the Garfield home a national historic site. Today, the James A. Garfield National Historic Site is considered the most historically accurate 19th-century U.S. presidential site. In addition to offering a powerful glimpse of post-Civil War life in America through videos and exhibits, the Garfield home has become a favorite location for cultural experiences. During this past summer, the lawn was the site of the Civil War Music Festival, a performance of “Henry V” presented by the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, and the University Heights Symphonic Band’s summer evening concert. Learn what makes the James A. Garfield National Historic Site truly special at NPS.gov/jaga/index. htm . Or visit the historic home yourself! Between May and October, the Garfield home is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with regular tours scheduled throughout the day.
A Presidential Porch Uncovering History at the James A. Garfield National Historic Site
Despite a distinguished career serving the United States, James A. Garfield is best remembered for having the shortest tenure of any U.S. president. The 20th President of the United States served for just over six months, from March 4, 1881, to Sept. 19, 1881, before he died by assassination. Here in Ohio, people tend to know more about Garfield’s house than they know about the president himself. The James A. Garfield National Historic Site is a popular destination for history buffs in northern Ohio.
In 1876, Garfield acquired a house in Mentor, Ohio, where his sons could learn about farming and he could spend the summers while Congress was on recess. Reporters would nickname the house “Lawnfield” a few years later, when Garfield ran for president. In 1880, Garfield gave speeches from his front porch, greeting thousands of supporters during his presidential campaign. At Lawnfield, Garfield quite literally ran the first successful front porch campaign.
