#701 | Trauma, Oppression, and Audism: Clinical Implications for Serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing Communities This session explores how trauma, audism, communication barriers, and systemic inequities impact Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. Participants will examine clinical misdiagnosis, language deprivation, and healthcare disparities through culturally responsive, trauma informed approaches. Case examples and practical strategies will support clinicians in reducing harm, improving engagement, and fostering equitable mental health care.
Paula DuPont, LCSW is a Therapist at WellPower providing outpatient and school-based services across the lifespan. They specialize in culturally and linguistically responsive care for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind community and serve on the boards of Deaf Overcoming Violence and Empowerment (DOVE) and the Colorado Daylight Partnership. Marja Possner (she/her) is a Deaf Person of Color adopted from South Korea, with 20 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, advocacy, training, and consultation. Her work spans board service and statewide policy initiatives, including advancing accessible behavioral health systems for Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities through equity-centered, intersectional expertise.

Participants will learn practical lessons from Colorado’s 988 implementation, including leadership, workforce sustainability, cross- system collaboration, governance, and crisis system transformation. Gordon R. Coombes, MA serves as Director of the 988 Colorado Mental Health Line within the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration, where he leads statewide crisis system development, enterprise strategy, workforce initiatives, and partnerships across behavioral health, public safety, and community organizations.
