Mark Twain once said that growing old is an issue of “mind over matter,” but if you struggle with knee or hip pain, then you know that this isn’t true at all. Hip and knee pain can really take the spring out of your step, causing you to move slower and leaving you with pain that becomes more difficult to cope with, step after step.

WAPTWins Kirkland Car Show! (...sort of)
OK, here’s the real story. My former business partner (and Father-In-Law) has always had a passion for old Chevy trucks. He has 2 restored pickups, a 1955 Chevy Cameo and a 1946 Chevy. As a kid growing up my wife always loved the ’46 pickup and it was affectionately named “her truck” while her sister loved the ’55. After an extensive restoration the ’46 has been proudly shown at local classic car shows. This photo shows the ’46 with my father-in-law, wife, and 2 daughters holding the award for “Best Truck” at the Kirkland classic car show this year. It has been fun for me to see my father-in-law’s love for vintage cars passed on to my wife and nowmy daughters. Perhaps someday I’ll find my first car, a 1971 Datsun 240Z…

A life free of back pain is within your grasp. MarkTwainoncesaid thatgrowingold isan issueof “mindover matter,” but if you struggle with knee or hip pain, then you know that this isn’t true at all. Hip and knee pain can really take the spring out of your step, causing you to move slower and leaving you with pain that becomes more difficult to cope with, step after step. There isanendless listofreasonsastowhykneeorhippainmaydevelop, fromaslip-orfall-relatedaccidenttoasports injuryorevenacaraccident. Don’t Wait Until It Is Too Late! When an injury develops, seeking the support of a physical therapist is the best course of action. Working with a physical therapist soon after an injury develops can help reduce your recovery time and improve your ability to cope with the pain and discomfort by introducing you to targeted exercises and stretching techniques that can enhance your ability to recover from the injury. When you are dealing with a knee or hip injury, every step requires more effort than typical. This can really drain your energy level as you
attempt to go about doing even basic tasks, such as taking care of your home or walking around the office. What Can Physical Therapy Do to Help? Physical therapy is not a one-stop cure all for pain management. This is a long-term solution to pain and suffering through the use of targeted exercises and stretching techniques that are designed to strengthen the targeted areas and help the body recover and heal. By identifying the exact points on the body that are not moving as they ought to be, it is possible to make a plan to increase flexibility, motion, strength and even improve coordination. Who Needs Physical Therapy? Are you moving like you should be? Your hips and knees are essential to everyday movement; whether you are sitting, standing, walking or running, youneedyourhipsandknees ingreatshape.Sometimes, when yourhipsandkneesare inpain, itcancauseyou tochange theway that you are moving, causing you to change the flow and pace of your gait, which is the way that you walk. Other times, prolonged pain can cause you to stop doing movements that are indicative of healthy joints.

If you’ve experienced any hip or knee pain and are considering whether physical therapy is a good choice for your health needs, consider the following: • From a standing position, are you able to lean over and touch your toes? If so, then this indicates that you have proper hip and low back flexibility. If not, then you may need to improve your flexibility and joint range of motion, and physical therapy could be helpful. • In a sitting position, can you comfortably cross your legs, leaving your ankle to rest comfortably on the opposite knee? If this is painful, oronekneeconstantlymustbe lower
than the other, then this may be indicative of knee concerns that could be addressed with physical therapy. • From a standing position, with your feet planted flat on the floor, can you push your body intoasquattingposition?Youshouldbe able to squat all the way down so that your buttocks are almost touching your heels. If you aren’t able to do this, then physical therapy may be helpful in improving your range of motion. • Standing near a wall or countertop, arrange your feet so that you are standing with the heel of one foot touching the toes of the other,as ifonabalancebeam, andseehow longyoucanstandstill.Canyoubalance for 10seconds? The goal of any physical therapy program is to restore range of motion and improve flexibility and strength while reducing the general experience of pain. Unfortunately, hip and knee injuries often tend to linger. Every movement relies so heavily on the hips and knees that it makes it difficult to allow these joints to actually rest following an injury. Physical therapy provides targeted exercises thatsupportthe jointswithprecisemovements that help reinforce strength and range of motion. If You Have Arthritis I Need Your Help! • We are getting ready to begin a new workshop series this fall that is about Arthritis. • I am looking for some people to help me practice and polish the information we will be sharing and to help me decide what types of people are in the most need of help. • As we prepare to get started, I need some past patients to help me get ready, so keep reading to find out if you can help… Does your hip, ankle, or knee feel really stiff and sore in the morning? If you answered “Yes”, then you may be showing some early signs of arthritis. People who suffer from arthritis often complain of stiffness in the morning that will go away after a hot shower. If this sounds like you, give us a call at 425-820-2110 and come in for a FREE 10 minute conversation about what is going on. We can discuss if your pain is likely caused by arthritis and what you can do to get back to normal. Do you have pain when you stand up after you have been sitting for 20 minutes or more, but then feel better after taking a few steps? If this sounds like you, then you may be suffering from arthritis. Arthritis can cause joint pain and stiffness with periods of prolonged sitting or lying down. If you stand up and move around and start to feel better, then your pain may be due to arthritis. Joints with arthritis often get more sore when not moving, but will feel better with movement and activity. Are you someone who dreads sitting down because you are afraid it will make you more sore? If so, give us a call ( 425-820-2110 ) and come in so we can talk about what might be the cause of your pain and what you can do to feel better again. It will take 10 minutes and is 100% FREE.

Do I Have
Arthritis?
“I feel better after I stand up and move, but then I start to get sore again.” Ever wondered why this happens? Well, it might be due to arthritis in your joints. Movement and exercise will help joints with arthritis feel better; however, it needs to be right kind of exercise and the right amount. Too much exercise or the wrong kind of exercise can create more pain. If this sounds like you, call us at 425-820-2110 and we can have you come in for a complimentary screen to discuss what is going on and what you can do to feel better. Do you have swelling, pain, or redness in joints on both sides of your body? If this describes your pain, you may be suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). RA is a different kind of arthritis than the more common osteoarthritis (OA).
While Osteoarthritis is caused by “wear and tear,” Rheumatoid Arthritis is actually an auto-immune disorder. That means your own body is causing damage to itself. RA can typically cause pain in the same joints (hands, elbow, etc) on both sides. If you think that you may have RA, give a call at 425-820-2110 to schedule a FREE screen to discuss what is going on and what options are available to help get you back to feeling better again. “When the weather changes, my joints feel more stiff and sore.” Ever caught yourself saying this? Guess what, it may be arthritis . Why the emphasis on “may be arthritis”? Keep reading… While there is no “scientific evidence” that people who suffer from arthritis will get more sore when the weather is colder, those of us who work with these people will tell you there really is something to it. Just because we can’t prove it, doesn’t mean that this isn’t a typical complaint of people with arthritis. So if you are dreading the coming of colder weather, give us a call (425-820-2110) and come in for a FREE 10 minute conversation. We can discuss if your pain is related to arthritis and what options you have to start feeling better before the cold weather arrives!
