S P O R T S HAWKESBURY IS HOSTING A JIU-JITSU TOURNAMENT DEBUT
A massive Jiu-Jitsu tournament is making its debut in Hawkesbury! Martin Nguyen, a Montreal resident, is the founder of Submission Arts United (SAU), an organization of competitive grappling, including jiu-jitsu and submission grappling. This grappling tournament organization, located in Montreal and founded in 2014, coordinates jiu-jitsu and grappling tourna- ments throughout both the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Hawkesbury is its next stop. The Hawkesbury tournament will be held on Saturday, January 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex. This tournament marks SAU’s 16th event and will be bringing in competitors from throughout the Eastern Ontario region, with some competitors coming from as far away
as Quebec City and Toronto, as well as grapplers from the United States and the Maritimes. Approximately 500 competitors, both youth and adults alike, are expected at the Hawkesbury tournament. In order to thank Hawkesbury for welco- ming its competition, SAU will be donating part of the profits from the competition to the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital Foundation. Mayor Paula Assaly will not be able to attend the event, upon invitation, as she will be in Toronto for a conference. Councilor Antonios Tsourounakis, who himself teaches Karate to children, will be representing the Town at this compe- tition over the upcoming weekend. —EAP newsroom
