HAL SMITH'S MORTONIA SEVEN TRADITIONAL JAZZ, SWING

The MORTONIA SEVEN was specially assembled to perform the music of Ferdinand 'Jelly Roll' Morton at the 2021 Bix Jazz Festival in Davenport, Iowa. These hand-picked musicians have extensive experience playing with a wide variety of groups and are currently active as bandleaders and sidemen at festivals, concerts, clubs and swing dance events. HAL SMITH (Searcy, Arkansas) … Drums / Co-Leader. Leader of the New Orleans Night Owls. Plays with Banu Gibson, Tim Laughlin, Floyd Domino, and others. Contributing writer for The Syncopated Times. DAVE KOSMYNA (Toledo, Ohio) … Cornet/Co-Leader. A regular with the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band of Toledo as well as the Toronto-based Climax Jazz Band. T.J. MÜLLER (St. Louis, Missouri) … Trombone. Leads the Gaslight Squares and the Arcadia Dance Orchestra in St. Louis; works with Miss Jubilee and the Yas Yas Boys. DAVE BENNETT (Waterford, Michigan) … Clarinet. Leads popular jazz quartet. Has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras and leads the Memphis Speed Kings Rockabilly group. KRIS TOKARSKI (New Orleans, Louisiana) … Piano. No doubt one of the finest interpreters of Jelly Roll Morton’s music. Plays regularly with Tim Laughlin plus solo appearances and teaches piano. BILL REINHART (San Francisco, CA) … Banjo/Guitar/Vocals. Veteran of the West Coast jazz scene. Performs regularly with Clint Baker's Jazz Band, Cafe Barone Allstars, and the Barbary Coast Jazz Band. STEVE PIKAL (Eden Prairie, Minnesota) … String Bass. Bassist with the Holland-Coots Jazz Quintet, Groovus, the Midiri Brothers, Travis Anderson Trio and other jazz and swing bands from coast to coast. SPONSORED BY JACK & BARB MC COWN

Clarinetist, saxophonist, composer, and arranger JONATHAN DOYLE lives in Port Townsend WA in the Pacific Northwest when he's not spending time in Chicago, Austin TX, or on the road. Jonathan's career has allowed him to perform on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, at New Orleans' Preservation Hall, on Austin City Limits TV show, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night’s Swing, in the famous Spiegeltent at Chichen Itza, and major festivals such as Chicago Jazz Fest, Chicago Blues Fest, New Orleans Jazz Fest, French Quarter Festival, Detroit Jazz Fest, Umbria Jazz Fest, Port Ferry Folk Festival, WOMADelaide World Music Festival, and Festival International in Lafayette. He’s also busked on street corners from New Orleans and Mexico to Australia and Europe. He played on and toured to support the grammy-nominated album Willie and the Wheel with Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel. In 2021, his song Sweet is the Night (as recorded by The Fat Babies) was featured in the movie Passing , based on the Nella Larsen novel of the same name. The movie was picked up by Netflix and you can watch it there ( Sweet is the Night comes in at 48:38). Jonathan is committed to crafting original music as well studying American musical traditions. He strives to organize and be a part of bands whose music is rooted, yet distinct.
